DJ Airek's Mandatory Reading for Marketers - Vol 1

Ok, people have gone on and on to me about why I shouldn't help people in the industry, but I never listen, in fact if I don't help people out, I feel that I am not accomplishing what I'm here to do.

Now, with that said. Everyone knows that I am hardcore 110% into branding, promotion, and marketing at the highest level of execution I can reach. I have read damn near every book I can find on the subjects above, and many on subjects I haven't listed. With Marketing, Branding, and Promotion being my core field of study for the last 15 years or so, along with nightclub promotions and the like, I am going to randomly give out morsels of marketing and promotional advice to help out the newbies here, and maybe even some of the old timers that either never did it themselves, or had someone to do the dirty work, but are now on their own. Here is volume one of my food for the marketing God's mind!

This week, I picked up a brand new book, as I do most weeks from Amazon or other book purveyors on the web. The book is called Meatball Sundae - Is Your Marketing Out Of Sync. It's written by one of my favorite marketing guys ever, Seth Godin.. He is a mastermind, and author of one of my other favorite viral marketing works, Unleashing the Idea Virus. He founded and grew one of the first online marketing companies named Yoyodyne, and ultimately sold the company to Yahoo in 1998 and was commissioned by Yahoo to head up Permission Marketing for Yahoo. He also was a columnist for Fast Company.

"Meatball Sundae is the definitive guide to the fourteen trends that no marketer can afford to ignore. It explains what to do about the increasing power of stories, not facts; about shorter and shorter attention spans of consumers; and about new math that says five thousand people who want to hear your message are more valuable than five million who don't".

If you're a marketer, check this book out.

Woof.

That book is far more than any marketing lesson I could teach.

This guy is a rockstar pretty much as far as online and actually viral marketing is concerned.

Marketing is an alien world for me, I am totally new to this. Is this book suitable for people like me?

Can you tell more about the book please?

Thanks

This is the only marketing book you'll ever need. It teaches you how to market the ninja way... with katanas, black attire, and caltrops! Think about it... ninjas are branding masters! Everyone knows what a ninja is, where they come from, and their fabrication of a dark mystique makes everyone want to be a ninja.

So here you have nations of people wanting to be ninjas, all smacking each other silly with nunchucks and throwing shurikens at poor squirrels. The clandestine assassin market is HUGE with profits in the millions. Let the ancient farmers-by-day and killing-machines-by-night of feudal Japan show you how to sell porn, microwaves, or anything you can think of!

But in all seriousness, I'll have to pick up a copy of Meatball Sundae and I look forward to more of your recommendations.

As a kid I would dress up like ninja.

Running across swimming pool full of cold water is not something easily learned.

True story. I once bought an unsharpened samurai sword because my parents wouldn't let me get the real thing, but the tip of the sword was still pointy. So anyway, I'm outside under an apple tree, picking up the apples and trying to slice them in half with this blunt sword and swinging the sword around like I'm Musashi. I end up stabbing myself in the leg somehow.

\m/\m/ NINJA!

Ok, more recommendations, Airek. I have The Psychology of Persuasion and that's really the only book on marketing and such I've read. I need to expand my library.

If you're going to learn marketting the samurai way there is only one path to go. Musashi's Book of Five Rings. I assure you the 75% of this Ha ha Lung fellow ripped everything in his book directly from The Book of Five Rings and The Art of War. The Book of Five Rings teaches you that every competitive environment you enter can be best used in some way or another to your advantage. It teaches you that there is an entire picture to be seen all at once, and to be watching every aspect of your environment for openings for manipulation in your favor. To conquer your opponent you must use these opportunities for manipulation, use your environment and adapt to adversities in your environment. It's a very good book, both for aspiring ninja ewarriors and porn marketers alike.

I dunno man.

Meatball Sundae sounds pretty good.

The keywords Meatball and Sundae in one product could have a wide breadth of interests in itself. Especially on the internet.

Just the novalty itself could make you rich.
Make the product and see what happens.

Selling even 5000 for $4 bucks each is good money.
It would be like da pet rock.

Ya that's a great book.. There's quite a few out there.. Another good book MANY in this industry would do well to read (but likely wont), is The Starbucks Experience: 5 Principles for Turning the Ordinary into the Extraordinary. Amazing business concepts and practices that many in this industry would do well and profit well from adopting.

Always start with the Art of War, written during the 6th century.. absolutely amazing how the tactics hold true for business and strategy today. The Greatest salesmen in the world is a great read.

Thanks for the heads up on this book .. I'll pick it up as well.
