While I do not seek it, I don't think I fear it, either... whether it's an end to consciousness or just another step.
A long time ago, someone I consider wise told me to live my life as well and upstanding as I could, so that when I was older, I'd be able to look back on it, and live it a second time in my mind. I've found that philosophy also helps keep one at peace with most things.

Not afraid, kind of looking forward to see what happens next as all the rest is merely speculation.

I'm 24 and diagnosed with a genetic defect after I had a couple carotid artery problems that should have killed me then so yea I think about it daily now. Don't care about dieing, it's the not being able to live as I want that scares me, being in a hospital for a few days gets me jumpy as hell and pretty soon I'm checking out with or without doc permission because just sitting around waiting for other people to help me fucks with my mind.
Death is easy, it's the living that's hard. |

I came to grips with death when I was twelve and loosing control over my body as it became paralyzed and was advancing into my lungs. Since then I have had many close calls and have always been very calm about it.
The only fear of death I have is for those loved ones around me, how they may handle it, and well for their well being. Hell currently everything I do is for the betterment and the security of my wife for when I do die. Since without some freak accident, I will die well before she ever will.

I never became aware of my own morality until my parents had their 40 th anv. It made think they arent going to be around forever and im not going to around forever. My dad as you know has stage 4 lung cancer they gave him 3-6 months and he has outlived that and is going strong. I remember sitting with him and he said Im not afraid die ,Ive lived a good live. Its not being there for your mother is whats hard to think about.

it never ends
God was smart, and invented recycling as first. So better be afraid for what you will become in your next life. One that charge backs, or one that makes a sale?

I only posted this because a biker freind of ours had a bad accident and in all honsesty he should be dead, any how he has been in hospital for three months now and the bike which he had an accident on was not even his, it was loaned to him by another freind of mine who rides like a lunitic when we go out and I always thought that he would be the one to kill himself, Any how it just got me thinking that it doesent matter how badly hurt you are in an accident or sick from an illness you can still pull through no matter what unless your number has been called..so all of this just got me thinking about death and how people really feel about it, because its something we are all gonna have to face... BTW.. Im not on any meds either.. well not yet im not..

Everyone just fears, "not living" (if anything at all).
All the time you are dead is exactly the same as all the time before you were born. You weren't afraid of the time before you were born were you? People are selfish and fear all they will miss when they are dead. They try to imagine the world will remember them, but they won't. Life goes on. 158,857 people died today. Did it affect you at all? When you die, you won't affect anyone either. The World and life continues and you won't be a part of it anymore. Welcome to this World! |

Yes because you were not aware of life before you were born. I thinking now that you are alive and aware of life does it actually bother you now that one day your life and every thing you have done will be over.

I believe you are agreeing with me. You only fear "not living" while you are alive. Once you die, it will be just like it was before you were born. The world goes on and you are no longer a part of it. Nothing to fear! |

I predict that advances in nanotech and cell engineering will make death only a memory in the next 50-70 years. . . if the research is made public. There are many reasons NOT to share this possible gift of "immortality", ranging from overpopulation to religious zealots (God WANTS you to die, to move on to heaven, or in the name of Islam, etc).
I don't believe it will be one giant discovery by any means. I believe that if you are young now, you may expect something like this: In your lifetime, the ability to keep people alive progressively longer, at first with little improvement to the "state" of old age. Later, the ability to keep a person alive and young in flesh to an age of 200 or so should be relatively easy. In the span between, let's say, your age-scale of 100-200 (100 years, total), there will be further refinements to take you to maybe 500. By the time you arrive there, it will extend indefinitely, whether that is through replacement of organs and cells, or nano-bots that constantly patrol and repair from within. Yes, I believe we are that close. I am certain many will laugh at this as lunacy, but if you check around the net, with verified university researchers, not the weirdos, you will see hints of what may be to come soon. Unfortunately, there are so many groups who would NOT benefit from these sorts of advances. The knowledge may be discovered only to be quietly discarded in the back halls of economic, political or social institutions whose very existence depends on the business of death. Immortality? Possible. Only if our governments and society in general is willing to make some SERIOUS changes, soon. Imagine, it though. A hundred years ago, who would have believed the advances we made during the 1900's? |

People who are afraid of dying, even though they don't admit it because they've never been close to dying yet!, when young.. they don't give a dam about anything, but when their time approaches 50-60+ y/o they inevitably start getting more and more religious/spiritual ..... I've seen it many times (and I'm only in my 20's) ... people tend to look for a higher power since they just can't imagine that death is the absolute end of their existence, in order for (most) people to keep good mental health they need some sort of hope.....
I'm not trying to sell any religious idea here since I don't roll with a specific religion, this is pure observation which I'd like to call the "The final syndrome" ....it is still a theory but at the rate it's going it might as well become a law... ...yeah, I know and knew a lot of "old folks".....

It's possible the "syndrome" you describe is actually evolutionary or even, as backward as it seems, a self-preservation attempt. After all, as you approach the "end of the line", it becomes easier and easier to hope that after death SOMETHING continues. Thus, the religious connection. On an evolutionary note, it sure wouldn't benefit the species if all of its older (and soon to be gone) members devolved into blithering idiocy when the realization struck home. The old adage: Death Row is filled with God's children. Or something like that. |

not afraid at all. I know I will have to face it one day.
However I am afraid of the "way" I am going to go. This frightens me more then death itself. Sebs |

I'm sorry but... did I mention "Fear" there?, "Quick assumptions only denote a person's immaturity, even at an older age" (think about it) People become religious/spiritual for many reasons but when they are starring at the face of death thoughts such as "is there anything after death" start to emerge; that's why they need some sort of hope to keep it all "glued together", if you consider this as "an awakening" stage so be it, it just shows you are religiously inclined, which is OK with me, and if you are 50+ it just confirms my point. ![]()
