It's possible the "syndrome" you describe is actually evolutionary or even, as backward as it seems, a self-preservation attempt. After all, as you approach the "end of the line", it becomes easier and easier to hope that after death SOMETHING continues. Thus, the religious connection.
On an evolutionary note, it sure wouldn't benefit the species if all of its older (and soon to be gone) members devolved into blithering idiocy when the realization struck home.

I am 40 years old and at the moment and I do not belive that there is anything after death but wether that will change as I get even older I just dont know but what is said above I can relate to as my mother did get a lot more relgious as she got older.
