Region of the US with the best food?

Dirty South? Southwest? Northeast? Midwest?

I grew up in the midwest so I'll always be partial to my comfort food. Meatloaf, roast beef, turkey and dressing, pot pies, beef stew, etc.

Which region is your favorite and why?

Honestly any region that had a dense slavery background. Guessing that would be the Dirty South.
Reasoning is I love "soul food" which is most often made from the not so desired parts and ingredients. Takes longer to cook but just feels so right and tastes so damn good.

However I have built up a huge ass personal cookbook of dishes from every region I love as well as every personal recipe I use including every family one I could obtain before it was lost to time. Been working on making a family cookbook to give out one year for Christmas or something.

Living in the 'dirty south', I can vouch for their quality of food. Nothing but heart stopping goodness here.

A lot of the south is full of fresh fish usage, just not much into sushi there.

I'm a 'soul food' lover, so Dirty South, I guess. I love me some buttered grits, hush puppies, fried chicken, country fried steak, collard greens... I'd be so fat if I had grown up there.

I am all over salmon as well (far northern CA here). I appreciate the delicate seafood approach of the west. Same goes with sushi of course since it went crazy due to the west.

Now oysters on the other hand. Well that is about as dirty south as you can get going way back in history. Yes specially raw oysters. They were a common street food early on. The dirty south is more than just LA.

My favorite raw oysters are from Japan Kamoto ..yum

I think they are also raising them in places in the US now. Maybe in the south...that might get me down there

I'm partial to italian foods, so NY and surrounding areas are quite tasty to me. We've been in the south for 5 months and have yet to have any southern cooking Chicken, corn bread and potatoes was never as appealing to me as ravioli, crusty italian bread with butter and a canoli!

It's really hard to find authentic italian food around here

im from the south, and we just ate a bushel of raw ones yesterday. (from Apalachicola) ***slurp*** probably the best ive had in a couple years.

and i wouldnt exactly call sushi a northwestern US quisine, it has migrated to us just like its migrated to you, but it isnt one of the foods of our (mine or your) region/history.

Id have to say the Northeast, yes southern cooking is great but the variety in the Northeast is unbeatable. Plus we have REAL BAGLES, REAL PIZZA, etc.. For the foodie there is no better place than the Northeast.

I would agree with you as far as the food chains or franchises are concerned the south sucks in that respect, but the real mom pop southern style eateries are actually pretty dam good.

Now the region of the country with the best food overall I would say the northeast for 2 reasons.
1. You have every type of ethnic food imaginable.

2. The water. Yes the water. The water in NY especially is very rich in iron which makes for a better tasting meal.

Is it healthy or healthier for probably not, but we are talking about better tasting.

I have heard this is why the pizza crust there is better. There's actually a place here in the ATL burbs that gets NYC tap water shipped here to make their crusts with

Gimme real louisiana cajun cook fests any time, and for food safety and quality I'd have to hand the laurels to much of SoCal and the west coast in General.
