Region of the US with the best food?

Dirty South? Southwest? Northeast? Midwest?

I grew up in the midwest so I'll always be partial to my comfort food. Meatloaf, roast beef, turkey and dressing, pot pies, beef stew, etc.

Which region is your favorite and why?

After Shock Media 10-29-2006 07:44 PM

Honestly any region that had a dense slavery background. Guessing that would be the Dirty South.
Reasoning is I love "soul food" which is most often made from the not so desired parts and ingredients. Takes longer to cook but just feels so right and tastes so damn good.

However I have built up a huge ass personal cookbook of dishes from every region I love as well as every personal recipe I use including every family one I could obtain before it was lost to time. Been working on making a family cookbook to give out one year for Christmas or something.

TurboAngel 10-29-2006 07:45 PM

Well I would have to say the Dirty South, you'll have to take a trip out here.

:winkwink:

notabook 10-29-2006 07:47 PM

Living in the 'dirty south', I can vouch for their quality of food. Nothing but heart stopping goodness here.

Kimo 10-29-2006 07:48 PM

new orleans has some awesome eats

BlueWire 10-29-2006 07:52 PM

A lot of the south is full of fresh fish usage, just not much into sushi there.

CC 10-29-2006 07:56 PM

The best thing about eating in the South is the sweet tea :) :)

isabelllo 10-29-2006 07:57 PM

I'm a 'soul food' lover, so Dirty South, I guess. I love me some buttered grits, hush puppies, fried chicken, country fried steak, collard greens... I'd be so fat if I had grown up there.

isabelllo 10-29-2006 08:13 PM

I am all over salmon as well (far northern CA here). I appreciate the delicate seafood approach of the west. Same goes with sushi of course since it went crazy due to the west.

Now oysters on the other hand. Well that is about as dirty south as you can get going way back in history. Yes specially raw oysters. They were a common street food early on. The dirty south is more than just LA.

Psycho_x 10-29-2006 08:17 PM

Dirty south

MikesTraffic 10-29-2006 08:17 PM

Live in montgomery, alabama, I like southern cooking more then anything

Worldnet 10-29-2006 08:19 PM

Southern cooking is the best.

My favorite raw oysters are from Japan :upsidedow Kamoto ..yum

I think they are also raising them in places in the US now. Maybe in the south...that might get me down there :winkwink:

DaddyHalbucks 10-29-2006 08:31 PM

The Northeast has a wide variety. Most big cities have their share of great restaurants.

DjSap 10-29-2006 08:55 PM

old school southern cooking is awesome..

OG LennyT 10-29-2006 09:17 PM

wdsguy 10-29-2006 09:18 PM

Mike AI 10-29-2006 09:20 PM

Not a region, just a city.

New Orleans

Sarah_Jayne 10-30-2006 02:31 AM

If I could only have one for the rest of my life I would happily make do with the food of the Philly/PA Dutch area of the country.

thebossxxx 10-30-2006 02:34 AM

Most diverse ethnicities = NYC..

I agree, I have been to some restaurants in Nawlins that have some amazing food, really interesting ingredients and fab service as well.
I wonder what it's like there since the disaster :eek7

Furious_Female 10-30-2006 05:45 AM

I'm partial to italian foods, so NY and surrounding areas are quite tasty to me. We've been in the south for 5 months and have yet to have any southern cooking :1orglaugh Chicken, corn bread and potatoes was never as appealing to me as ravioli, crusty italian bread with butter and a canoli! :)

It's really hard to find authentic italian food around here :Oh crap

im from the south, and we just ate a bushel of raw ones yesterday. (from Apalachicola) ***slurp*** probably the best ive had in a couple years.

and i wouldnt exactly call sushi a northwestern US quisine, it has migrated to us just like its migrated to you, but it isnt one of the foods of our (mine or your) region/history.

drjones 10-30-2006 07:45 AM

Chesapeake Bay area seafood.

Blue Crabs and Raw Oysters!!!

New Orleans for its mouthwatering seafood delicacies. :thumbsup

SinisterStudios 10-30-2006 08:49 AM

Id have to say the Northeast, yes southern cooking is great but the variety in the Northeast is unbeatable. Plus we have REAL BAGLES, REAL PIZZA, etc.. For the foodie there is no better place than the Northeast.

Peaches 10-30-2006 09:58 AM

C'mon - it's the south. Hands down :)

OG LennyT 10-30-2006 09:59 AM

I'm hungry now

tony286 10-30-2006 10:11 AM

northeast less chains more mom pop type places in the southeast the food is very uninspired.

I would agree with you as far as the food chains or franchises are concerned the south sucks in that respect, but the real mom pop southern style eateries are actually pretty dam good.

Now the region of the country with the best food overall I would say the northeast for 2 reasons.
1. You have every type of ethnic food imaginable.

2. The water. Yes the water. The water in NY especially is very rich in iron which makes for a better tasting meal.

Is it healthy or healthier for probably not, but we are talking about better tasting.:2 cents:

BuggyG 10-30-2006 10:35 AM

mmmmmmmmmmmmm... deep-fried twinkies or mars bars
that's some good ol-cooking for ya! :thumbsup

kristin 10-30-2006 10:36 AM

This is a tough question ...

Buffalo has some of the best pizza and wings, but I live in Tucson now with some of the best Mexican ...

aimeesweet 10-30-2006 10:39 AM

I'm partial to the North East's seafood and italian dishes...

SxDx 10-30-2006 10:42 AM

the south!

I have heard this is why the pizza crust there is better. There's actually a place here in the ATL burbs that gets NYC tap water shipped here to make their crusts with :)

PantieZ 10-30-2006 11:53 AM

atm .. i´d say Irak or Afganistan food ...
but Korean food rocks ! So ... go ahead guys .... the world needs you

Sarah_Jayne 10-30-2006 12:40 PM

the real answer is generally what you grew up with. Home cooking is the best for me and that doesn't mean heating up frozen meals.

TheJimmy 10-30-2006 12:47 PM

California...for the local cuisine (mezzcans & hippie food) and anything international you want will likely have a great spot to find it here.

escorpio 10-30-2006 01:14 PM

Texas BBQ

MediaGuy 10-30-2006 01:18 PM

Gimme real louisiana cajun cook fests any time, and for food safety and quality I'd have to hand the laurels to much of SoCal and the west coast in General.
