Who really cares if the US likes football or not? Only thing that ticks me is this obsession the yanks have of comparing the two in 'our guys take bigger hits' 'soccer is for pussies' yada yada. Well breaking news. Football (ie the real one with the round ball) is not a contact sport in the way American Football is. Rugby or Aussie Rules is a contact sport similar to American Football so by all means compare.

And another thing going on about helmets ripped off etc etc. Don't wear them in the first place. And junk the padding while you are at it. The hits are bigger in NFL because the players are carrying more weight thereby increasing the impact force. Reduce the weight and you reduce the impact force making it no different to Rugby. The one thing that makes American Football a laughing stock around the world is that absurd amount of protection the players wear. Frankly it is embarrassing.

Compare it to the ratings of other sports in the US. An regular season football game gets higher ratings than the World Cup finals here.

Soccer being the number 1 sport played in the world and that being an exciting fun sport are two different things.

Soccer is popular because its easy and cheap to play, which makes it universal. The sports most Americans love are expensive to play. If everyone in the world had the access to the equiptment to play football I am sure things would start to balance out. But the reality is most nations can not afford anything but a soccer ball and so the brutal sport will continue to reign supreme in participation.

Soccer is just incredibly dull. If they did away with the offsides rule, and maybe dropped the number of players to 9 to open it up more, it would be far more exciting. But any game with only 5 shots on net per game is flat out ridiculous.

And lets not get into settling a world cup with fucking penalty kicks.

You dont get it, dont call people if you cant understand.

The ads for the world cup werent' targeted to the American Public. If the soccer league in the US hadn't gone out of busines, you could compare the two sports in the US.

You guys have it backwards, you think America is inferior because we consider soccer a childs sport, we think you are inferior because you cant comprehend football.

The hits in the NFL are bigger because the players are bigger, stronger and faster.

Most soccer fans will argue that the soccer players are quicker and faster, but thats not true. The nfl players are actually are faster, plus bigger.

I know its hard to imagine for you guys but the NFL is made up of players who are not only bigger than the world cup teams, but they are faster and quicker.

Imagine your fastest soccer player, then add 40 lbs of muscle and you get a defensive back in the NFL or maybe a reciever.

Oh there's gotta be a better way to unite people than a sporting event, lol.

I understand what you're saying, but I've always been the type of person that would rather be playing a sport than watching it. So, soccer, baseball, etc, doesn't matter to me I think it's a bit of a waste of time to watch a season's worth of games. I would rather be playing a sport than watching it.

Still, converting people from the US to watch soccer, it's just too much of a cultural thing. We like our baseball, basketball, football, we play those sports as kids, we grow up playing those sports, and it's just more of a preference than anything else.

I mean some of my friends love Nascar...personally I hate nascar...if they try to shove it down my throat I'd probably have the same reaction to someone pushing soccer on me. To each his own

I agree with that. Very well said. The fact is that American's dont follow soccer. The average sports fan didn't even realize the world cup was about to be played until a week or two before it started.

I do however appreciate the fans in the other countries following their team as a national symbol. However, it rubs me the wrong way when they try to use a kids sport to be anti-american. I'm sure american's win some sport like table tennis or badmitten in the olympics ever time, but we dont rub that in their face.

That is exactly your problem. It has nothing to do with sport, football or anything else. It's about a disease called "patriotism" and a chip on the shoulder that will not permit any element of criticism. Next you'll be saying soccer, football or whatever you want to call it, is "un-American".

There is little doubt whatsoever, that if the US won the World Cup it would be nothing other than "my dick is bigger". There is also no doubt athletes from the US have done very well in Olympic sports as do many other countries. The fact that the US may not have won the World Cup is irrelevant - only one country did - and that was Italy.

How about congratulating Italy for winning instead of thinking about "self" and whining about percieved attacks on your patriotism 24 hours/day?

PS The sport is called badminton, not "badmitten".

The rest of the world should be thankful that games like soccer and rugby haven't become popular in the US: if they had, we would be spending 3 hours watching a 90 minute game and the rhythm of the sports would be totally lost.

You have to admire the way the TV networks in the US managed to convince the public that the format of play should be secondary to their need for revenue. Although what that says about so-called sports fans is something else entirely...

I love how anyone outside of the US thinks they're so great because they love soccer and most people in the US don't. Just shows how much opinions of people in the US matters to everyone.

Yeah they're more fun to play than to watch.

Few people in North America play soccer beyond elementary school. The fact that the US even qualifies in the World Cup goes to show that there is a lot of dormant talent in the US for world football should we ever make it one of our favorite pastimes.

That's the whole point FreeFastHost - they don't. I personally don't give a shit

Also don't give a shit who does and do does not like football in the US. That has the same interest as who likes football in Iceland.

Sorry man - dream on. There is no more interest in the opinions of "people in the US" than there is in Iceland either. Sometimes we hear about them more and they become a talking point - often because they are too silly.

Oh, then why was this thread and many other posts done on how the US doesn't like soccer? Because no one cares? Obviously a lot of them do. This board goes through the same thing every World Cup.

Because this thread is about the USA and Soccer? See, if this was just a thread congratulating the Italians on winning, I'd completely agree with everything you just said

However, read the original post again

Anti-soccer people? Some people just don't like soccer. It isn't about popularity, it isn't about winning, it's just the plain and simple fact that it's just not that popular of a sport in the USA. Who cares? lol, I certainly don't.

And to follow it by saying that soccer can't compare to any other sport, well that's just nonsense...any sport that a person takes pleasure in is important to them. I don't care if they're a curling fanatic, that's cool, as I said earlier, to each his own and whatever floats your boat.

I do agree, that funforone definitely let his patriotism set sail, but the whole thread is pretty silly to begin with don't you agree? So what if the US doesn't like soccer? Who really cares? Why even start a thread about it other than to get a little rise out of the topic.

So, I agree with you a bit, I also think you kind of overlooked the ridiculous nature of the topic in the first place and that the USA was the topic of it. God knows why anyone gives a rats ass if the USA doesn't like soccer, lol

For the same reason I gave in replying to your post. There has nothing but a load of "opinions" from the US on the subject of the World Cup and how it's a "pussy game" and all kinds of utter crap.

The World Cup was never about the US or any particular country - it's an international sport. Nobody gives a shit about what "people in the US think" - there is more to the world than "opinions" from the US.

Meanwhile... the silence is deafening in congats for the country who did win Classsic!

lol, well I agree with golf...football is only moderately interesting...and again I'd rather be living life then vicariously living through a sporting event. So, on that note I'm going to go lift some weights :D

btw, yeah I agree, if people like it...I tolerate it as long as they don't force it on me.

I'm an American with season tickets to the Giants. I watch the Rangers regularly and I used to go to the Knicks all the time. I think American sports are going to shit with all the commercialism and hype. Soccer is a real sport in my eyes. I do hate all the diving/faking injuries from teams like both of those who played today, fucking guys go down like they got shot and then are running around 2 minutes later, but besides that it's almost a perfect sport. 3 susbstitutions all game. One red card and your team is short a man for the rest of the match. I love it.

I wish the US could compete.

soccer is too boring to be a sport. Honestly, if falling down and hitting the ground in pain just because someone 'brushed' you, is a sport, then the world has a serious problem. Soccer seriously lacks any entertainment value and I wouldn't spend a penny watching it. When I go to a hockey game, I know, regardless of a win or loss, there may be a fight, and it's going to be a great time. If I went to a soccer game I'd need a book or something to do while they went back and forth a couple hundred times trying to kick a little ball in a 400 foot net. There's just no excitement in that, it's a poor man's game that people in any poverty country can play, that's why it's so popular. Anyone can take a ball and kick it between two rocks and call it a soccer game.

have you ever wore pads that the american football players wear? because i did for 4 years in highschool, it ads maybe 5 pounds to you... including the helmet... so take that away, and our players playing rugby would still hurt, if not kill someone...

Baseball, american football, hockey, etc. were all widely popular and beloved sports long before the tv was invented.

what are you smoking?

I dont know why Americans bitch about football. Just because they suck at it and no-one in the rest of the world cares about their sports they get all upset. Especially when Cuba beat them.

The boring replies always amuse. Baseball for example is even slower than cricket and whilst I enjoy cricket it's considered by many a very boring sport. The constant breaks in US football make it very, very boring to watch as far as I'm concerned and I'd far rather watch a good rugby game.

And for what it's worth - having American relatives I unfortunately end up watching a lot of US sports. Most people who call football (soccer) boring cannot claim the same as they've seen very few soccer games. Sure some games aren't worth watching but that's the same with all sports i.e bad games are simply that. A good football (soccer) game though can never be said to be boring by anyone who understands the game and has an interest in the outcome.

Who cares? Why are you so fucking obsessed with this notion that NFL players must be 'the biggest, meanest toughest guys' in the world?

Ok I'll play the game. Take off the padding and put one of them at the bottom of a ruck with a couple of guys raking their studs down his head and body in an attempt to get the ball off him

Better yet do it when playing against South Africa

And apart from a bloody head what will it prove? Jack shit thats what.

Anywho still not caring that US is not into football. It still rankles that they held a world cup there a decision which was nothing short of a disgrace. Mind you a lot of Americans did go to the world cup in Germany (and loved it) and in numbers which surprised me given there is no real media coverage. Its not like British footie fans turn up in significant numbers for the Supercupbowl thingy!

I agree, advertising breaks are much more thrilling. I like nothing more than to be watching a sport for it to stop so that I can see what are the latest offers at McDognuts.

So its popular because it is inexpensive to play? OK In Europe Football is the most popular sport and we watch it because we have no money for other games? On this basis should not noughts and crosses (or tic tac toe as I think Americans call it) be the most popular sport? I mean its not especially exciting (but then neither is football apparantly) but it is bloody cheap. Heck all you need is a finger and a patch of dust.

Football is inexpensive to play, easy to understand, can be played on any surface (and most weathers) and most importantly is great fun to play and watch. This makes it accessible in way no other major sport can match which is why it is the most popular sport in the world. Football also gave birth to games like Rugby, American Football and Aussie Rules. It is the daddy. It rules it terms of paticipants, spectators, universal appeal and money. These are facts not opinions.

If there was no such thing as football, baseball or basketball in America, our athletes would play soccer.

The world cup would be held in Europe every year to decide which teams gets the honor of playing a preseason game against the U.S.'s world champion.

Italy would now advance to play a pre-season game against Cleveland's rookie team.

WTF are you talking about now?

Bet the undercurrent still has nothing to do with football, baseball, basketball or soccer, but more to do with something about the US again

Did you know Italy won the World Cup yesterday?

Soccer is an extremely easy game to learn and master.
If the best athletes in the US played soccer instead of other sports, the US would have a league of its own where the last place team would be better than the world cup champions.

Its a long reasoning behind it that is not a politically correct story to tell, so I'm not going to educate you on this one.

When the USA cant beat Cuba at baseball I really doubt they could ever beat any European teams at Football.

Sports leagues in the United States are supported by advertising dollars. No soccer league can stick around because they dont have any money. They cant get money because no one watches them.

99 out of 100 sports fan in the U.S. couldn't have told you that the world cup was this year.

Yeah that is why the US turn up to football matches where they only stand a chance of winning if the opposing team cant control their laughter.

I don't care if you like the game or not, wether you're american or not.
Just don't be an Idiot and claim other countries can't afford to play American Football that's why on a world scale it ranks somewhere near the bottom
and is NOT EVEN an Olympic event.

Do you dream a lot while typing on GFY?

What's the obsession about the US and soccer?? "If' this and "if" that does not matter. It was not the US or any other country that won the World Cup - it was Italy. Live with it.
