before everyone jumps on the "american's are fat bandwagon" (which is undeniably true) - its also fair to point out that the US is only SLIGHTLY leading the pack with many countries right behind. it has little to do with lazy or anything else other than a very swift and massive shift in diet. we ate healthy, whole, natural foods for millions of years and only in the last 100 years or so, we have started living almost entirely on sugar and fat.

the general rule according to UN studies is that it takes only about 10 years after a traditional diet being corrupted for diabetes and obesity rates to begin to explode.

They use computer digital imaging to age children, starting with current age and nutritional lifestyle, along with exercise habits and then show the parents what these kids will look like at age 40. It's frightening.

If the parents agree, the entire house is emptied of all junk...be it sugar laden or fat overkill and they are put on nutritional programs and exercise regimes for three weeks....

Even with gas prices going up in this country, there was discussion on local talk shows about people, who continue to drive...what they gave up was flying because the cost to fly a family of four has skyrocketed, while driving, comparatively, was cheaper.

We don't walk anywhere. And, we shop differently than people do in Europe. Our refrigeraters are larger, so we stock up in greater quantities. I've taken people from overseas to our Costcos and supermarkets..and they are amazed at the quantity of food, the choices we have, the overly processed junk....the unhealthy ingredients...

For instance, I never saw a case of soda while in Europe. Hell, I didn't see cases of anything in Europe.

They are more likely to shop daily as opposed to weekly or monthly...not like us. We stock up as if there won't be food the following week...

When Curious Toy Boy brings Tim Tams from Australia, there is no high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients...even though it's a junk food...

Since my house has adopted a different approach to nutrition, we now shop the perimeter of the stores, buying fresh fruits and veggies. The only things that come in a package would be beans, legumes and brown rice. Everything else is fresh....so, yeah, we do shop more often...but it's been worth it.
I have watched that as well. The intriguing and scary part of that show isn't the fact that the familys seem to have no discipline, but moreover they seem to not understand any basic nutrition or exercise.

Almost like they have been living under a rock...

The American diet is the most disgusting know to man kind. A country who have a national dish called "McDog Nuts" deserve to be fat.

The reason the other countries are only gaining on the US is because the US is bringing it's Mcshit food to the other countries. I live in Asia and it's amazing because the only time I really see fat people are when walking near the Mcdonald's or KFC or Pizza Huts. So we can all thank the US and McFarts for fattening and stinking up the rest of the world.

I live in the UK. Americans are famed for fast food. They eat more of it than anyone else then wonder why they have to have 'fat schools' for the kids who need to take up two seats on the bus.

I've had this discussion with my trainer, who cannot fathom the notion there are people who are clueless about nutrition. He believes, that on some level, they, deep down, know they are eating unhealthy foods..

I don't know if that's always true....so many blame genetics....nutrition is not exactly a priority in schools....the more I talk to people, the more I am convinced there are plenty who do not relate nutrition with the break down of the body's systems...

Maybe they are living under a rock; but, how many watch that particular television show or fit tv or other channels that address these issues...

I don't know if we're dealing with rationalisation or what..but it is, indeed, frightening....

My sister in law is one of those families...all four are overweight, morbidly so..and in her case, she does know she needs to do something...she has high blood pressure and high cholesterol..but she takes pills for it, rather than biting the bullet and clearing out her house of crap...going for a walk..

When I see the struggle these families endure with the tantrums as the sugary fattening foods are thrown away, I can almost understand the avoidance of going through the process of getting healthy....but those who endure, end up in much better shape in the long run...

This show is a must see for everyone...the pancreas and other essential organs can only take so much before they pay you back, big time...seems to me the struggle is worth the short term aggravation....for a long term benefit.

My favorite is "you have a higher metabolism..."

It always seems that when I encourage someone to lose weight, they immediately tell me that I don't understand because I can eat anything I want due to my "high metabolism..."

Funny, but I also work out daily (many times twice a day). And I work out hard.

If you go to the gym, look at the people that are in shape; they are always the ones drenched in sweat.

If you want to be in shape, something has got to be a struggle. Either in your diet (sacrificing) or in your workout (pushing yourself), or a combination of both.

People in America are just convinced that others are "lucky" and "fortunate."

Conversely, the ones who are heavy say they have a slow metabolism.

When I was heavy, I went to a diet doctor who told me I was aging, that my metabolism was slowing down. This is a guy who went to medical school, for Christ's sake. There was nothing wrong with my metabolism. It was put to sleep by me. I slowed down. And, I've done a lot of research on this very subject. A battered metabolism can take up to 18 months to heal itself; hence, the recommendation to eat small meals, consisting of a lean protein, complex carb and 'beneficial' fat....six to eight times a day to keep the metabolic process constantly working...

Well, you're right, Cory. The ones at the gym are the ones who sweat profusely. I watch the fat ones walking the treadmill at 2.5 miles per hour, no incline, reading their magazines..and then there's us..who are plugged into our iPods...anything to alleviate the boredom as the sweat pours off us...each and every one of us trying to get our heart rates up to maximum performance to build stamina and endurance, so we can lift those damned weights..push a little harder....

What's laughable are the complaints when the slugs don't lose weight.....from their so called exercise regimen. I used to have sympathy, back in the beginning.....because I was one of them. Now? Hell, if I can do it, anyone can. Never mistake that it's hard work....and frustrating...that toning, the maintaining of weight....the building of muscle, the need to define.

There IS going to come a time when the manufacturers of food will be held accountable to some degree. We may be litigious; but, just as cigarette companies added enhancers to ensure the addiction, there are also ingredients added to food to turn off the 'I'm full' signal to the brain.

I'm a size zero and fit into size 24 Paige jeans, I am so petite I won't even fit in size 24 Seven For All Mankind jeans or certain brands, I only fit in brands that are made extra snug like Paige and Hudsons. I can't say that I eat very healthy, for many years I ate loads of In N Out, pizza, ice cream, I basically live to eat. I just happen to be able to eat anything I want and not get fat, it's just genetics.

I am approaching almost 30 and I still fit in my size 24 jeans. They are getting a bit snug though so I probably should watch more what I eat. I for one am not fat at all and very very very proud of that!

All good genes! To be totally honest I don't work out either... If I did I would get toned super fast I think...

I love being able to eat anything and not work out and not get fat. Life is very good!!

Only fast food I eat recently though is In N Out, sometimes Subway or Quiznos, or Rubios... I won't ever touch McDonalds though, that's like ratmeat...

I hope things are changing, but if it is...it's happening pretty slowly. We're a pretty wasteful nation in general. And we don't think ahead...we build out so much you can't hardly walk anywhere useful in so much of the area.

that makes sense. its not because people want it and are eating it... or because most western/developed countries have their own versions of shit food and fast food restaurants. according to you, it all happens ONLY because of pepsi and mcdonalds.

too bad hitler didn't win the war, then he could tell you what to eat and you would be better off for it and would be bothered with the annoyances of personal freedom and choices.

I don't think Americans eat fast food more often than anyone else.
They just eat more. Meal sizes are extreme compared to the rest of the world.
I don't think I've ever emptied my plate at a restaurant in the US. Always do that in Europe.
In Miami I couldn't even finish my starter..

Do you recommend any online articles or sites on the smaller meals, lean protein, complex carbs diet? I am getting into that and I don't feel like I am educated enough on everything I can and can't eat.

My metabolism took a bit of a dive as well, but as you said, it was my fault. I gained some, but I have worked to get it back off and I am at a good weight now.

Obesity is a huge problem worldwide, we are just leading by example I guess. Mcdonalds is spreading across the world, and in time plenty of people worldwide will be going to mickey d's on a daily basis, just like here in the stats. I think alcohol has alot to do with it as well. It is becoming more and more acceptable to binge drink these days. I am running into alot of people I havent saw in awhile who are putting on wieght like crazy.

I am running into alot of people I havent saw in awhile who are putting on wieght like crazy.

It isnt the fact that the people who sue are americans, its the american justice system that makes it easy to exploit people. Do you honestly think people in other countries wouldnt file retarded lawsuits 24/7 if they knew they had a good chance to win? Do you think it's just genetic for americans to sue people?

Well you have a point with the Justice system. However when I first got to Budapest - they were doing road work by our flat. The thing I notice was the lack of Yellow Tape and Don't fall in the hole and Warning after Warning - Like I see in America...now the fist thing that came to my mind was that if this was the USA people would be lining up to Fall into these holes and SUE...I know I'm right on this. Now the big difference is if you fell into one of those holes in Budapest....people would help you up make sure your ok be nice to you...But the minute you started with the I"M SUEING shit or anything like that....They would simply laugh at you and say watch were you walking...or even something like this...Stupid American drink to much fell in the hole and thinks it's our fault.

IMHO that is how it is.

Obesity Levels in America
The United States has one of the highest rates of obesity in the developed world. Approximately 300,000 adult deaths in America each year are attributable to unhealthy dietary habits and physical inactivity or sedentary behavior.

Overweight Adults in America

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight (BMI > 25, which includes those who are obese).

Levels of Overweight

All adults: 129.6 million (64.5 percent)
Women: 64.5 million (61.9 percent)
Men: 65.1 million (67.2 percent)

Obese Adults in America

Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are obese (BMI > 30).

Levels of Obesity

All adults: 61.3 million (30.5 percent)
Women: 34.7 million (33.4 percent)
Men: 26.6 million (27.5 percent)

Adults of Healthy Weight

Less than half of U.S. adults have a healthy weight (BMI > 18.5 to < 25).

Healthy Weight Levels

All adults: 67.3 million (33.5 percent)
Women: 36.7 million (35.3 percent)
Men: 30.6 million (31.8 percent)

Overweight, Obesity in Children and Adolescents

While there is no generally accepted definition for obesity as distinct from overweight in children and adolescents, the prevalence of overweight is increasing for children and adolescents in the United States.

Child/Adolescent Weight Levels

Approximately 15.3 percent of children (ages 6hahaha8211;11) and 15.5 percent of adolescents (ages 12hahaha8211;19) were overweight in 2000. An additional 15 percent of children and 14.9 percent of adolescents were at risk for overweight (BMI for age between the 85th and 95th percentile).

Obese children are more likely to become obese adults, at higher risk for virtually every major chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

The British are much more healthier than the Americans. You may earn more than us but we pay higher taxes to compensate for everything being free here; healthcare, schools, legal aide etc. Due to our live style we can spend nearly half what you spend per person and still remain fitter and live longer.

You should fucking cry on the 4th of July.

Yeap, I agree with this..
I've been in Mexico City for over 6 months and I've only seen about 3 obese persons. Same with Colombia and Argentina, only a handfull of "over weight people".
When I arrive at the San Diego airport for example, right away I see 80% are over weight"..
