Since I have been back in the States "March 25" I think it's safe to say that most Americans have about 20 pounds extra on them. Really the people in Europe are either Just smaller or they Eat Less ?????

What do you think ??

Americans, by and large, are fatter. The portion sizes for our meals is larger than what we get in Europe. The high fat, high sugar in our foods is greater.

We're a fat people and now we are creating fat kids.

I'm guessing it's probably further from the ocean's, too. People who live near beaches I'm sure want to stay somewhat in shape so that they can look halfway decent in the Summer.

True people in California tend to be smaller then people in say Michigan...Now I really do mean that. I grew up in Michigan and moved to AZ when I was 20.
Back then I noticed the 20 pound difference....East of the Mississippi.

fast food nation man, whenever i get back to the states i'm quite amazed, the people are definately fatter, but considering that a large coke/popcorn/whatever here is the size of the small one in the states, and is much more expensive here, for sure has something to do with it.

I think you are right most Americans are at least 20 pounds over weight. I'm in Ohio and when I go into a restaurant of say 200 people. I'll be one of the smallest people in there with maybe three other people who are not over weight either LOL. I shit you not.

I can't get over how many people are HUGE in Ohio. I lived on the west coast for 10 years so I was really shocked when I came to Ohio. I bet the heart doctors here make a "killing".

First of all, I think(speaking for Dutch now) we have more regular exercise. When I was in the USA, everything was done by car. Drive in banks etc etc. Here the distamces are shorter, so easy to take the bike.

Furthermore we eat more healthy( I think) lot of carbs btw

And our portions are much much smaller. What is called small in the USA is LARGE here

I've lived in many regions of the US....and a difference I've noted is the fact that we don't walk. We drive. When I was in Europe, I noticed that many walked where they had to go, which is exercise...it's not that they don't eat rich foods..their cheeses are to die for...and breads and pastries....but they walk it off. We don't. We drive everywhere.

True True.....Now with the price of GAS for us Americans getting so high...maybe that will have to change. Over 3 bucks a gallon is a lot for the USA. I know in Budapest it's about twice as much. Now just like our fat stomachs are cars need to get smaller too.

focus groups do product testing on consumers to find out what TASTES BEST before launching any new product.

and people buy and eat what TASTES GOOD.

and they sit and watch tv while they eat their pringles.

most developing capitalistic countries will soon have the same probs that america has with re: to obesity.

i was in a grocery store in manila recently---lots of new processed snack foods now.

and lo and behold, the flips are getting fatter also.

people need to understand nutrition, exercise, read labels, and only eat for nutrition, not pleasure.

It has a lot to do with exercise. When I'm over seas I end up walking every where and even though I eat far more fat and calories (unless I'm in Asia) I loose weight.

There's a show on TLC...called, Honey, We're Killing Our Kids. What a wake up call that is.

They use computer digital imaging to age children, starting with current age and nutritional lifestyle, along with exercise habits and then show the parents what these kids will look like at age 40. It's frightening.

If the parents agree, the entire house is emptied of all junk...be it sugar laden or fat overkill and they are put on nutritional programs and exercise regimes for three weeks....

Even with gas prices going up in this country, there was discussion on local talk shows about people, who continue to drive...what they gave up was flying because the cost to fly a family of four has skyrocketed, while driving, comparatively, was cheaper.

We don't walk anywhere. And, we shop differently than people do in Europe. Our refrigeraters are larger, so we stock up in greater quantities. I've taken people from overseas to our Costcos and supermarkets..and they are amazed at the quantity of food, the choices we have, the overly processed junk....the unhealthy ingredients...

For instance, I never saw a case of soda while in Europe. Hell, I didn't see cases of anything in Europe.

They are more likely to shop daily as opposed to weekly or monthly...not like us. We stock up as if there won't be food the following week...

When Curious Toy Boy brings Tim Tams from Australia, there is no high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients...even though it's a junk food...

Since my house has adopted a different approach to nutrition, we now shop the perimeter of the stores, buying fresh fruits and veggies. The only things that come in a package would be beans, legumes and brown rice. Everything else is fresh....so, yeah, we do shop more often...but it's been worth it.

Good points, Raven! I watched that show a few times, too. Of course it's biased and emotional etc like all good tv is, but it has a good point.

I've been trying to eat better here, too. And you know it's a lot of fun cooking food instead of reheating something frozen or ordering in. I think the hardest thing to be disciplined about is portion control, since most of us grew up with "finish everything on your plate or you don't get dessert" from our parents.

I've taken people from overseas to our Costcos and supermarkets..and they are amazed at the quantity of food, the choices we have, the overly processed junk....the unhealthy ingredients... For instance, I never saw a case of soda while in Europe. Hell, I didn't see cases of anything in Europe. They are more likely to shop daily as opposed to weekly or monthly...not like us. We stock up as if there won't be food the following week... When Curious Toy Boy brings Tim Tams from Australia, there is no high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients...even though it's a junk food... Since my house has adopted a different approach to nutrition, we now shop the perimeter of the stores, buying fresh fruits and veggies. The only things that come in a package would be beans, legumes and brown rice. Everything else is fresh....so, yeah, we do shop more often...but it's been worth it. __________________ Raven ~RETIRED~
