Yeah being in a wheelchair is bad enough but it really pisses me off when people who are not handicapped are parking in handicapped. I have sports car which is actually easier to get in and out of but people still leave notes saying I am not handicapped because of my car.

Are you serious? That doesn't surprise me at all.

I think what many people don't realize is... it isn't the closeness that makes handicapped parking spots better, its the width. The spots are much wider than a typical car spot, especially in big cities where real estate is a hot commodity. Those wide spots are needed to open the door all the way so its easier to get in and out.

I've always said they need to have different colors and classifications for parking spots now since they give those placards out so easily.

You are exactly right. I have actually parked in handicapped and someone in a regular space next to me parked so screwed up I couldn't even get into my car. I have to put my wheelchair together by my drivers side door and have to have the door all the way open to do it.

I only do it if there is NOWHERE else to park. Other than that, I won't do it...I figure that a handicapped person would want to be treated equally. That means that he/she has to walk/roll as far as I gotta go.

ugh, what annoys me most is when people jog towards their car, obviously having no disability, they look around and jump in. i don't have any disabilities and i really dont mind having to walk an extra five minutes from my car to the store.

It isn't really a matter of preferential treatment. Put the parking spots around back for all I care, put them at the other end of the parking lot, no big deal. Regular/skinny spots are simply very difficult to use.

If they have a placard on their car, I don't see how you'd know what their disability is. For many people, closeness is very important. Being able to park right outside the office building to your doctor's office is necessary if you have a heart or breathing condition.

We not only have expectant mother's parking but now parking for mother's with small children, lol!

But they aren't "legally" there - it's just something the stores have done for their customers. Publix started the expectant mother's thing 10+ years ago and I think it was an Ingles where I saw the small children sign.

It is the same as using the wheelchair stall in a restroom. I will wait on the other stalls to open up first. As an ignorant teenager I went into a wheelchair stall and there were none available when someone in a wheelchair came in. The person with her gave me a HUGE lecture. I totally understood the difficulties they went through and I have never been in one since.

Thanks that is very frustrating waiting for the handicapped stall. I can understand when the restroom is busy but usually when it is empty is when I have to wait for one fucker in the handicapped stall. I am glad someone is considerate.

What's more annoying is this: One handicap-spot on a block. One handicapped person. The person uses the spot perhaps 20% of the time and the rest of the time he takes up a regular spot and the handicap one is wide open - everywhere else is full.

He's not doing it out of concern for anyone else since there's never been any other car in his spot. He obviously prefers other spots and will only use "his own" when it's convenient. People like that are more of a waste of time and space than those who occasionally use one of 30 handicap spots at the mall.
