When it comes to griping about the seasons, man could take a lesson from birds, and simply go with the flow of warmth, and head south. After all, they?ve been doing it for thousands of years, and it seems to work for them. Birds migrate for two basic reasons: warmth and food. Which means that 520 of the 650 species of birds that nest in the U.S. fly elsewhere for the winter, because not only is the cold uncomfortable, it also means limited food supplies when it comes to insects, fruits, seeds, etc. But not all birds fly south. For feathered denizens of the Arctic, the 24-hour days near the Arctic Circle are a bonanza for feeding, and more hospitable to the breeding season, so they actually fly North. Many species will accumulate a fat store before taking off for their winter quarters, while others will go hungry until they reach their destination, and some will stop to snack along the way. During the trip to winter destinations, birds of various species can be found at altitudes as high as 29,000 feet, such as the bar-headed geese sighted over the Himalayan Mountains. Several species are known to cruise at 20,000 feet, on a regular basis, primarily to reach the best conditions to aid flight, e.g. tailwinds to carry them along at higher altitudes, or lower altitudes to avoid wasting energy while fighting headwinds. The record holder for migration, is the Arctic Tern, which in a year, makes the round trip all the way from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic and back again for a circuit of over 21,000 miles, roughly the circumference of the Earth. Given their speed and rate of travel, it?s estimated that they spend most of their life, which can be as long as twenty years, in the air.

Sharks Have More Sense(s)
At one time, scientists assumed that the shark?s nose was the main weapon in their arsenal, for ferreting out prey. After all, a shark can sniff out blood in concentrations as low as one part per billion, from a mile away. To prove their point, they plugged the noses of sharks, and found them confused, and unable to locate prey that was purposely placed there for the taking. What wasn?t taken into account with those first studies, was what other senses the sharks had, and how the combined use of them make the shark one of the most feared predators in the ocean, and for good reason. Yes, the sense of smell is very sharp. It?s also a directional resource, with a nostril on each side of the shark?s nose, which can then take in the scents coming from two different locations. But their hearing is also acute, and most likely to pick up low frequency sounds with a pulse, such as the signals given off by injured or dying fish. These sounds are below the range of human hearing, and when seeking prey, a shark may follow them for some distance to determine whether the source is food. They are also gifted with something called the ampullae of Lorenzini, which enables the shark to sense low level electrical impulses given out by living creatures. The ampullae are clusters of electrically sensitive cells located under the skin on their heads. Those cells are connected by jelly-filled tubes to the pores, and thus to the outside world, from which they can receive the signals of hidden prey. All of these talents make an almost unbeatable combination, giving the shark multiple options for seeking out and tracking down their next meal. They also help to make up for the fact that sharks are somewhat far-sighted, and can?t locate food that is right under their nose, unless they are able to call on one of their other resources.

In 1999 the small town of Kingsville, Texas, went into a panic when a quiet night was broken by a sudden invasion by an army of 800 camouflaged men and 8 unmarked helicopters. Guns were fired, bombs exploded, an abandoned factory and abandoned police station went up in flames. Neither the 911 dispatchers nor the Kingsville police could offer people any explanation.
It turns out the Army forgot to tell anyone in advance about this exercise in urban gorilla warfare training. So, everything was under control. Or was it? The two buildings were set on fire by accident.

Making Jail A Positive Experience
Philippine Congressman Remo Jalosjos, despite serving a 173-year jail term for repeated rape of an 11-year-old girl, was reelected to a three-year term to be served from jail. In jail he had a color TV, several rooms to himself, paintings, a kitchen and a bathroom complete with a water heater and more. He sold food to prisoners from a kiosk and collected monthly dues for using his newly renovated tennis court. He says it?s unfair to accuse him of VIP treatment. The blame goes to the government because it cannot afford it for everyone else.
