I just got killed with Google adwords

I just checked my credit card bill and was stunned, $270 for a google adwords campaign.
I wont go into specifics but I got a lot of impressions and about 4% click throughs and $0 in sales. Not 1 sale.

I'm just stunned here. I thought this traffic was supposed to be gold. Ive done better on tgp traffic.

Expect to lose money in the beginning with adwords. I burnt through $1k before I was able to make a positive ROI. It does have a learning curve.

why would it work after $1k but not before that?
Are you tweaking the ad along the way, or just leaving it there and waiting?

the problem with adwords is the small volume

( unless you set up 500 campaigns for mini niches like WG probably does )

If it helps at all generic terms such as 'porn' 'sex' etc are usually way overpriced and convert like shit. Think niche and specific and LOTS of them.

Anything positive is good. Adwords is one of the lower ROI engines out there lately for me though unless we're looking at micro-niches. But for something generic, something in the area of 15% is descent.

I burnt through about $700 before I really learned how to make money using adwords. It definately takes a while (and money) to learn the system and make a ROI.

Landing page/sponsor may be worth looking at too then.

But once you have a good text and its making money, do you have to keep tweaking or is that it, you just keep adding money to your balence and forget it?

I have some ads on tgps that I never change and they keep making money. and Im trying to do something like that with paid search engine placements

What I find odd about google adwords traffic is that while it converts better (sales ratio wise) the retention was horrible.

Traffic from my TGP galleries converted from trial to monthly at better than twice the rate that the google traffic converted.

Go figure.

ive been positive ever since i started with adwords.

maybe 1 or two campaigns where i had cost=payout. but those eventually stopped.

maybe it might help to turn off the network content for google if u dont think its doing well.

You can get some nice findwhat results.. i publish them and let me tell ya, they get great exposure

I do, but it might be because of what I promote. There's really too many factors for me to answer that question with a single answer. I'll just say practice makes perfect. Old cliche, but it's true. I'm still tweaking my ads and keywords on a daily basis.

and then you always have to deal with the google folks who want you to do your site and description a certain way.

Why didn't you stop the campaign then? You only pay for clicks with AdWords not impressions.

We tweaked Ashley's campaign today and impressions are WAY up, over 1,000
by the end of the day or more - click through rate isn't good now, 3% - problem is she can't remember what the last text ad that was that was doing 14% click through and neither can I. doh!

a very nice experienced person is messaging me now and giving me a hand, so im going to give it another go.

Yeah, theres nothing worse than having a good ad and forgetting exactly how you worded it.

this is where having a marketing background is really needed, every word in the ad has to be carefully constructed and then edited depending on the results constantly. i've seen many a competitor come and go throughout the last couple of yrs.

I make more money in a day on ads with only 50 clicks or less per day then most people make in a week. Follow the rules.

There is a history of ads you can search through there... not sure why you wouldn't ever think of that.

mutt, you can see the old ad, just:
1. display the stats for all time
2. then mark the option "Include deleted items that were active in this date range"
3. scroll down to see your old ads

You should specify, for adult. I realize that this is an adult board but some people may be doing campaigns for casinos, pharmacies, etc, where things are different. Good advice though, that's about what I look for also with my adult campaigns.

Mmmmmm, I've gone through thousands over the last couple of years. I will give it a break and then try again with a different product/sponsor. Couple of times I made a profit, but overall I would be well and truly in the red. Tried changing wording, keywords, bid amounts, products. Guess its not my thing lol. Good replacement for poker machines though, one day I might make a profit there.

Yes, I think your 100% correct. Every word is crucial and probably my big downfall, that and not taking much notice of how much per click I'm paying. I used to just make sure I was #1 or close to it and that obviously was costing me too much!

My first tries with adwords were horrible...after doing a lot of campaings that cost me money i finally found something perfect making me very easy money with a 30% ctr.

But google refuses to give me any clicks for it anymore :/

I started with over 1k clicks in a day...now im at 50 clicks or so costing me 3 bucks whatever while my budget for the campaign is 120 bucks.

It really pisses me off.

If you type "sex" in Google's general search it hasn't returned adult companies for quite a while.

Yes of course I was busting his balls. I don't blame him one bit. I have busted my ass and spent 10s of thousands of dollars myself learning the game. I don't want to share everything I know either.

It's not a total loss if you learn from it

The add really does make a diffrance. Also put your domain name in it so you get branding from the impressions.
