Car junkies ... I got a question
I havea 99 Honda civic dx coupe
and when i press the breaks it sounds like metal on metal my brakes are not working any less than before I was told it could be a little metal thing telling me i need to get my brake pads replaced BUT i was also told that it is the rotors (spelling ) grinding against my breaks... but if that was the case wouldn't the brakes not work as well? they stop on a dime still just sounds horrid I don't wanna take it ina nd find out it will cost me 100000 to fix if it is something other than just replacing break pads I hate going in cuz my car is lowered and it does not have a camber kit on it so the tires lean in and they hate it and tell me ineed to get it fixed cuz it eats my tires like every 50k miles but i left camber kit off on purpose as I like the way it makes the tires look but anyways anyone help me with my question?

you need pads and maybe rotors by now...
It shouldnt cost too much... I had cross drilled rotors put on my car and it only cost $50 each, and pads were another $30 and the shop wanted $50 labor Get a camber kit... your fucking up your tires big time... I ruined my 20" Toyo's like that... expen$ive

Metal against metal sounds is exactly that. Your pads are worn down and the metal part of the pad is beating the hell out of the rotor.
Sure it may still stop well because you do have 4 brakes. Perhaps the rears are doing most of the work now. The longer you wait the worst things will be. If you went in when you first heard it you may have gotten away with just having the rotors turned and new pads put on. At this point you will probably need new rotors as well.

If the budget is tight you can throw a set of pads on there yourself (provided the rotors arent broken down to nothing). They will get chewed up pretty fast but depending on how much you drive could last you a month or 2. I have a cheap friend that does that all the time. The problem is by the time you get to your second or third set of pads it would have been more cost effective to get it done right the first time.

it should only be like 100 bucks to get new rotors and pads put in. it is reccomended because the stopping opwer will degrade and if the brakes get wet they will be like a fat man on a slip and slide.

if you can offord it in a month then throw it on credit.
brakes are an important part of the car, as are tires, but you dont care about them either. FYI, you cna pay 80 to have the pads changed now, and hten 120 to get the pads and rotors changed again in a month or two, or jsut suck it up and get them both done now and save yourself some money, cause you would have to have one shitty ass card to not save money even if you couldnt pay the balance in 2 months.

i know. it is going to be a lot cheaper to replace your pads than it will be to re surface your rotors. better not to wait. |

If you wait you're going to need rotors as well as pads.

If you can put it on a credit card get your rotors machined and new pads now. You may have lots of stopping power now but that will wear away VERY quickly. I give it a week before you have the stopping power of those old 10 speed era hard rubber pads
![]() Just replacing the pads will do for a while but if you are an aggresive driver you may only get a couple weeks out of them depending on how worn the rotors are. |

if you say stopping power is the same as always, then its gonna be the pad indicators telling you they are getting to the point of replacement. Take 1 tire off run your finger along the rotor, front and back. That will tell you right away. Im willing to bet its the pad indicator, which is nothing more than a small metal tab that touches the rotor while depressing the brakes, thus if its touching while braking thats telling you the pads are below what the manufacturer recommends. Elementary my dear watson

I just replaced the rotors and brake pads on my Honda, and the parts only ran me about 75 bucks. I thought it would be difficult to replace the rotors myself but it really wasn't. For what it's worth I can walk you through it if you want to try it yourself.
I still haven't bought a camber kit for my car either and IMO I don't see that much difference to my tire wear because of it. |
