Remember to cancel your creditcard!

Got this story on email today - sorry if its a repost

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die . . .

This is just so priceless . . . and so easy to see happening,
customer service being what it is . . .

My Aunt died this past January. CitiBank billed her for February and March for their monthly service charge on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00. Now it was somewhere around $60.00. I placed the following phone call to CitiBank:

Me: "I am calling to tell you that she died in January."

CitiBank: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."

Me: "Maybe, you should turn it over to collections."

CitiBank: "Since it is 2 months past due, it already has been turned over to collections."

Me: "So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?"

CitiBank: "Either report her account to the frauds division, or report her to the credit bureau . . . maybe both!"

Me: "Do you think God will be mad at her?"

CitiBank:". . . excuse me ?"

Me: "Did you just get what I was telling you . . . the part about her being dead?"

CitiBank: "Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor!"
(Supervisor gets on the phone).

Me: ''I'm calling to tell you she is dead"

CitiBank: "Could you fax us a certificate of death?"

Me: "Sure." ( Fax number is given )
( After they get the fax. )

CitiBank: "Our system just isn't setup for death."

Me: "Oh."

CitiBank: "I don't know what more I can do to help. . ."

Me: "Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could
just keep billing her . . . I suppose . . . I don't really think she will care."

CitiBank: "Well, the late fees and charges do still apply."

Me: "'Would you like her new billing address?"

CitiBank: "That might help."

Me: "Odessa Memorial Cemetery #### Hwy 129. (Plot number given)

CitiBank: "Sir, that's a cemetery!"

Me: "What do you do with dead people on your planet?!!"

LOL! Thats a classic. Incredible!

As a joke, we wanted to see if we could get our dog a card. We added her ( 1 yeah old Golden ) to an application and sure enough... two weeks later we had a card for here. haha!

Never racked up any charges on it, but Im sure the card is still active to this date. haha

Man... your story is nuts.

That's bullshit. Any bank would credit back any fees or interest upon reception of a death certificate.

As for adding your dog to your credit card, you can add whoever you want onto your account. You're responsible for whatever gets charged to your account by an authorized user, so the credit card company doesn't care who you add. I see people adding their 12 year old kids all the time.

One of my aunts had a step uncle cremated. The crematorium sent her a bill that was higher then the original quote so she told them they could just go ahead and keep the ashes.

This story sounds like a deja vu. almost..

My ex-wife died during surgery about 5 years ago , and for months her bank sent her credit card statement to my house, and i never really paid much attention , one day after an unusually large load of mail ( and a few drinks and free time in me ) i called up the bank and let them know they wont have much luck sending mail to a dead person .

So the guy asks me who is in charge of the estate , and i let him know that she didn't have much and there was no estate or funeral or anything like that. So then he does the same thing as above, he tells me he will have to turn the account over to a collection agency. Now she only owed about $200 and i also had her last paycheck. So i tell the guy if he wants the last paycheck he is welcome to clear the account and even keep the change, and he asks " did she sign the check ? " , im like " um no she is dead " so he tells me i can only give him the check if its signed or if i have a death certificate. I'm like look dude , im not going to go through a bunch of trouble to pay $200 a dead person owes you, just so you will stop sending me mail, if you want me to drop the check off at the bank , i will , but im not doing anything else.

So he says no he will send it to a collection agency.. Fucking idiot.. I threw the check in the garbage. This was the bank manager i might add.

When my father passed away I faxed his death certificate to all his financial relations. Credit card debit isn't collectable at death since it is a nonsecured debt. The card companies hate that.

I went through a lot of similar situations when I was taking care of my mothers estate after she passed. Some of these people just can't accept the fact people die.

He should have just gone shopping.

I know people who have racked up utility bills in dead relatives names. Kind of like an extended inheritance for poor people.

it has nothing to do with not accepting the fact that people die. it's simply that we require proof. as giorgio_xo said, credit card debt cannot be collected after death, and many people try to claim try to get out of paying by having a relative claim they're deceased.
