I would have to say that education is a waste of time depending on what you choose to study and why.
If you take an arts degree just to go to university and party then you are wasting your time. Most universities have become a "money machine" based on people like that, and has decided to ignore the people that REALLY want to learn. Better to get 10 people that will fall into their "degree program" and spit em out then 1 person who is going to give them administrative hassles. If you want to be another cookie cutter graduate into an oversaturated society, seems like a wonderful way to do it. If you go to school with a goal in mind and then make that goal happen, I'd hardly call that a waste of time. I wish universities would move back to the "old way" of educating people who were intelligent, and wanted to advance themselves in a specific field simply because they thrived on learning and discovering. Not Suzy Bigtits whose daddy runs Dayton tire and he sends her to study something because he never got to. She drinks, parties, and fails half her classes @ 20k/year. Why is she even there? Why not take up a trade or get experience working. I've never heard of anyone regret being educated in something they enjoyed, and chose to become educated in that field. Remember, you should always have a plan B, no matter how well things are going for you in any field. You can make money either with or without a university or college degree. Don't think otherwise. |

A degree opens up opportunities that are otherwise closed to you... whether or not you use your knowledge in your chosen field

The point of a liberal arts degree is to teach you how to learn, teach you how to be a critical thinker, and to make you a lifelong learner.
It doesn't matter how talented you are, without a degree, you only have a limited number of options. I got into the adult industry right out of high school, made a good living for several years, and thought that college was a waste of time. Unfortunately now, I have no degree, I'm not having the same success in the industry like I used to. Luckily, I grew up in a rich family, and I can go back to college to finish up my degree. But if I didn't have the opportunity to go back and get a degree, I'd be in a very tight situation right now, and I don't know what I'd be doing. Anyways, a degree opens doors for you, helps you develop your character, and allows you to learn things that you probably never would've studied on your own. I've learned a lot more being in the adult industry than I ever did in school. But school has opened my eyes to a broad range of topics that I never would've learned on my own. And once I finish up my degree, I feel I'll be head and shoulders above everyone else in the "real world." |

I am and it depends on why you are doing it in the first place. If you are only doing it so that you can get a corner office one day than maybe it isn't worth it. However, if you are doing it for the sake of education - ie you want to learn something new and expand your brain - then for me it was worth it. It was also a personal accomplishment.

I guess the multi-millionaire you spoke with won't mind mind that the doctors that perform his bypass surgery didn't go to college.
And then of course, he won't mind that the lawyers he hires to sue the doctors that fuck up the surgery don't have a college education either. ![]()

I was lucky that I had a teacher in high school (for a number of years..she was the only one teaching that level history) that made the point of her class to teach us how to use our brain and that continued into University. I think education is totally important. If you are not running your own business, then you really do need to have some form of a degree. Even so, it's nice to have something to fall back on if you do have to actually get a job that is not on the web or not your own business.
Of course this may not be what everyone thinks, but for those who are just trying to have regular work life (which I realize some people would say is boring) having a degree seems to be the safe route.

Not going to get too deep into this discussion, but I dont think college education is a waste of time. I even think everyone should get a master's degree at some point.
Although, there are the ones who do make it a waste of time. It's their fault. For example, if you start college and you are undecided about your major, you will waste lots of time. I pretty much knew what I was going to study in college, 2-3 years before I graduated from high school. Also if you can't finish a 4 year degree in 4 years, you are again wasting time. I got my computer science degree, got a full time job with good pay and it's been 6 months. I'm still 21. Has college been a waste of time? Hell no.

Why become educated if you are not interested in it. "Everyone should get a Masters". Not everyone wants to go to school, and school is not for everyone. The second point is presuming that people are failing because they don't want to be there, or cannot handle the work. Not the case for all people, but for the most part I agree. |

I believe education is important if you know that's what you wanna do, not if your parents told you you need to be a doctor or a lawyer to be successful in life, or if you're just undecided.
I go to a business school and you'd be surprised how people think. I ask my friends why they're at this school. Most people answer "to get a good job" or "to get a good future". My school is a corporate automaton production facility. Drones. I go there so I can be a better rounded business person and have the theory to fall back on in case of dilemna. I didn't go for the fancy programs either, just parts that interest me and are going to serve me. I couldn't care less about the title. It's funny how society thinks really. Parents say "go to school so you can get a career and a nice paying job" but most of them never teach you HOW to make money and make money work for you. But society needs workers as much as it needs entrepreneurs. Without education do you think we'd be communicating hundreds of miles apart in real time today? Or live past 40? The thing on boards like GFY is that most of us have been spoiled by our webmaster life and we have certain traits in common as well. Instead of being the let's say "regular" worker to entrepreneur ratio of 1:100, on GFY we end up with it being 1:1 because most of us have that common trait. I couldn't be happy with working for someone else, at least not in the long run and that's why i'm putting everything i can in my favor so i don't have to do it ever again. When i hear about city bus drivers who make $56000 a year with a high school degree i wanna kill someone. I wouldn't be happy at a job like that hell no, but most people are made to have their habilities harnessed by others. Our society needs it's drones to be happy.

good answer. there is a saying in collegiate circles: BS = bullshiit MS = more shit Phd = more of the same, piled higher and deeper ![]() if you are a true entrepreneur and working for yourself, a degree "won't help you get a job". but going to a real university is a life-enriching experience, and actually finishing and getting a college degree is a certification that you can follow the rules, do a task to a certain level, and achieve a goal. and that satisfaction stays with you, and the memories of your college experience stay with you throughout your life.

Also, in college you are exposed to a lot of subjects that you probably would not expose yourself to on your own. I know there are a lot of things I learned in college that I wouldn't have bothered to learn if I hadn't been required to. I think education makes you a more well rounded person and improves your critical thinking. It also gives you a chance to improve your interpersonal skills and learn to budget your time in a controlled enviornment. I don't see how college could do anything but improve your chances of succeeding in business. |

Education is always a good thing. University isn't always the best place to get it, but for a lot of people it provides a nice framework and nice carrot at the end of the day to motivate you.
Some things I wouldn't bother doing at university, like Arts, and perhaps even business, because for the most part you can learn these out of a book. I have three degrees, and it isn't the *facts* that you remember It's the way of thinking about problems that sticks with you. Even though my degrees have nothing to do with porn, I apply critical thinking to it every day, and it definitely helps. Of course you have to consider the opportunity cost. God knows how much $ I sacrificed by not having the time to work on business. I could not really take significant amount of time off my studies to concentrate on business. If your degree can wait, maybe it'd be better to concentrate totally on business while the opportunity is still huge.

well a degree can help give you more knowledge than you would have otherwise. but going to a decent school and taking the right program helps a lot more. the networking is very valuable as well if you're going to a good school.
you tell me you won't better off with a bsc in econ from wharton? but at the end of the day if you're an idiot, going to school will mean you're an idiot with a degree. |

It is not a waste of time. The education in college obtained in classrooms is just a fraction of the education happening in that institution.

I doubt that having a degree makes one more successful. However, I am glad that I have my BA from a university plus master classes. It is a sense of accomplishment.
Having a BS or BA gives you the opportunity to continue with your education to advance. |

But a college degree doesn't make up for a lack of talent, abilities, and ambition. I wouldn't encourage someone to quit running a successful business just to get a college degree, but it gives you something to fall back on. By getting a degree, not only do you open doors for yourself, but you also develop your character and mind. Even Bill Gates (a college drop out) said that- "nobody should drop out of college unless they believe they face the opportunity of a lifetime. And even then they should reconsider." Full article here http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/C...ay/11-4col.asp Anyways, it's probably not in anyones best interest to ditch out on college unless they feel really secure about their future. And anyone talented enough to become a successful entrepreneur, or even the ambition to start their own company probably would benefit from getting a college degree. I think you get my point. |

Although I was college prep all through high school, I joined the Marines because I school bored me. After four years of being a Marine I got out, and discovered that the real world was more difficult than I had imagined. After almost ten years of fucking around in low paying jobs, I went to college and took computers.
My degree is hanging on the wall behind me; I haven't looked at it since I put it up there. However, I can tell you I was hired with Lightspeed because I had just graduated. It depends on where you want to go in life. Most of us will be working for the man. When an employer has to people wanting the same job and one of them has a college education, guess who's going to get the job. I took computers. However, computers has changed so much since I graduated that it pretty much makes my degree useless - Everything I learned in college pretty much does't exist these days.
