Religious question. Age of the earth?

Hey, i know there are a few people here that are pretty clued up when it comes to biblical text and whatnot. I see a lot of people dismissing the bible, 'cause they say, according to the text, the earth was created in 4004 BC.

So i did a little bit of research about the topic, and i discovered that the 4004 BC date actually comes from the conclusions of one Anglican Bishop Ussher. Basically, to be taken with a grain of salt (or two).

You may find 4004 B.C. in the margin of some Bibles printed years ago, but that date originated in the mind of Anglican Bishop Ussher, and his conclusions are much more specific than the text demands.

What i wanted to know was this. Is there actually an accepted age for the earth within religious texts? Or is it very much open to interpretation?

Geez, those sure were the days back then...I remember this one day God had just finished creating the oceans and he was like "hey guys, check out what I just did," so me, John, and Paul went down to the shore and we double-dog-dared Paul to go in the ocean, so he did, and then this shark bit him on the ass.

Aaaaahhhhh.....that story sure takes me back.

Young earth creationists believe that the earth was created within the last 10,000 years, and that a worldwide, catastrophic flood can account for the fossil record and plate tectonics and other phenomena that make the earth seem old.

There is no hard & fast date given, just a general agreement that the days of creation mentioned in Genesis were literal, 24 hour days. They assume a priori that the bible is infallible, so if it says 24 hour days, 24 hour days it is. Standard geological dating be damned.

Some of these young earth creationists also believe in a flat earth because of a couple of biblical passages.

These people are intellectual terrorists.

The earth was created when jupiter enter the system.
jupiter hits mars and destroy life on it, so the earth was created after by pieces of mars and jupiter and venus!

Then people on mars who survive come down to the earth and starts again (the Atlantid) But a war with mass destrution weapon against alien change the earth's north and shout Pole of place. then the atlantid civilisation was destroyed and aliens take over the humanity. Now the humanity is under aliens controle and they created a new human/alien hybrid race to control us and be the king of countries etc..

The hybrid are royal families like in england and some europe countries and also big families like bush, rockafeller, sinclair, bronsfman.

God is alien and god gives to these families the right to comand us, those families created the big religion to have the complete controle over the population. they use secret society to keep the power in the family...

You are correct except I will mention that it is only fundalmentalists that belive the 24 hour day and the infallibility of the Bible.

To answer Chodadog's question. Not all fundalmentalists agree on Ussher's date, but almost all fundalmentalists believe the creation began within the time frame that Ussher presented and there are various dates presented. Usually a date is established by picking, what is thought to be, a known event in time and tracking Biblical geneology from that point in time.

Interesting fact. The Pope gave a great answer to this question, with regards to creation, the big bang, evolution, etc.

He said that the Creation story in the Bible is an Allegory. It didn't really literally happen that way. He also said that, therefore, science gives us the most reasonable answer as to how god created the Universe, and life, and man... and how long it took him to do so.

So, according to Catholic Law, the earth is about 5 billion years old, and the universe is about 13 billion years old, and man evolved from goo.

Now that is interesting. I had no idea the catholic church officially supported the big bang theory. Just did a bit of research to confirm the quote, and it is indeed true.

No. That would be a contradiction. Fundamentalists believe the Bible to be the literal, inerrant, infallible word of God and believe the geneology listed in the Bible provides a timeline for the creation. In these modern times there are fewer and fewer fundametalists and more and more Christians that allow for other than a literal interpretation of the Bible and do believe in an Old Earth.

Heh, silly question in retrospect. Cheers.
