Religious question. Age of the earth? - GoFuckYourself.com

Hey, i know there are a few people here that are pretty clued up when it comes to biblical text and whatnot. I see a lot of people dismissing the bible, 'cause they say, according to the text, the earth was created in 4004 BC.

So i did a little bit of research about the topic, and i discovered that the 4004 BC date actually comes from the conclusions of one Anglican Bishop Ussher. Basically, to be taken with a grain of salt (or two).

<i>You may find 4004 B.C. in the margin of some Bibles printed years ago, but that date originated in the mind of Anglican Bishop Ussher, and his conclusions are much more specific than the text demands.</i>

What i wanted to know was this. Is there actually an accepted age for the earth within religious texts? Or is it very much open to interpretation?

Young earth creationists believe that the earth was created within the last 10,000 years, and that a worldwide, catastrophic flood can account for the fossil record and plate tectonics and other phenomena that make the earth seem old.

There is no hard & fast date given, just a general agreement that the days of creation mentioned in Genesis were literal, 24 hour days. They assume a priori that the bible is infallible, so if it says 24 hour days, 24 hour days it is. Standard geological dating be damned.

You are correct except I will mention that it is only fundalmentalists that belive the 24 hour day and the infallibility of the Bible.

To answer Chodadog's question. Not all fundalmentalists agree on Ussher's date, but almost all fundalmentalists believe the creation began within the time frame that Ussher presented and there are various dates presented. Usually a date is established by picking, what is thought to be, a known event in time and tracking Biblical geneology from that point in time.

im not sure about age but one of the coolest theories about the moon that i have heard is that the earth was one giant planet (much bigger then it is now)

and a smaller planet when out of the solar loop and crashed into the top of the earth creating wat is now the moon

Interesting fact. The Pope gave a great answer to this question, with regards to creation, the big bang, evolution, etc.

He said that the Creation story in the Bible is an Allegory. It didn't really literally happen that way. He also said that, therefore, science gives us the most reasonable answer as to how god created the Universe, and life, and man... and how long it took him to do so.

So, according to Catholic Law, the earth is about 5 billion years old, and the universe is about 13 billion years old, and man evolved from goo.

No. That would be a contradiction. Fundamentalists believe the Bible to be the literal, inerrant, infallible word of God and believe the geneology listed in the Bible provides a timeline for the creation. In these modern times there are fewer and fewer fundametalists and more and more Christians that allow for other than a literal interpretation of the Bible and do believe in an Old Earth.
