Interesting fact. The Pope gave a great answer to this question, with regards to creation, the big bang, evolution, etc.

He said that the Creation story in the Bible is an Allegory. It didn't really literally happen that way. He also said that, therefore, science gives us the most reasonable answer as to how god created the Universe, and life, and man... and how long it took him to do so.

So, according to Catholic Law, the earth is about 5 billion years old, and the universe is about 13 billion years old, and man evolved from goo.
