Religious question. Age of the earth?

Hey, i know there are a few people here that are pretty clued up when it comes to biblical text and whatnot. I see a lot of people dismissing the bible, 'cause they say, according to the text, the earth was created in 4004 BC.

So i did a little bit of research about the topic, and i discovered that the 4004 BC date actually comes from the conclusions of one Anglican Bishop Ussher. Basically, to be taken with a grain of salt (or two).

You may find 4004 B.C. in the margin of some Bibles printed years ago, but that date originated in the mind of Anglican Bishop Ussher, and his conclusions are much more specific than the text demands.

What i wanted to know was this. Is there actually an accepted age for the earth within religious texts? Or is it very much open to interpretation?
