Personally, my opinion (as a former member of the armed forces) on this soldier is that he appears to be a shitbird who abandoned his post -- and maybe that's a fact. But we can't have the attitude that there's some kind of justice in leaving him with the enemy. He needs to face a tribunal in the US, and if he's found guilty of desertion or whatever, then give him the firing squad.

When Bowe Bergdahl joined the military, it likely was not with the intention of deserting.

If indeed Bergdahl deserted, what caused that change in him? It is possible, that like many of his fellow soldiers, his combat experiences caused him to suffer a mental breakdown, and instead of committing suicide, he followed a different course?

Some of his thinking at the time is revealed in his last e-mail to his parents before his capture:

Quote:
Last e-mail to parents
On June 27, 2009, Bergdahl sent a final e-mail to his parents:

Quote:
The future is too good to waste on lies. And life is way too short to care for the damnation of others, as well as to spend it helping fools with their ideas that are wrong. I have seen their ideas and I am ashamed to even be american.[sic] The horror of the self-righteous arrogance that they thrive in. It is all revolting.
His e-mail went on to describe his disillusionment with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan:

Quote:
In the US Army you are cut down for being honest... but if you are a conceited brown nosing shit bag you will be allowed to do what ever you want, and you will be handed your higher rank... The system is wrong. I am ashamed to be an american. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools...I am sorry for everything here.

These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid, that they have no idea how to live.

We don't even care when we hear each other talk about running their children down in the dirt streets with our armored trucks... We make fun of them in front of their faces, and laugh at them for not understanding we are insulting them...I am sorry for everything. The horror that is america is disgusting...

This is exactly my line of thinking. No matter what, he is not only a US Citizen but also a US Solider.

If we figure out he is guilty of desertion, then we'll give him the firing squad. (So not kidding either.)

And this is sad and disappointing. Clearly this person was not cut out for life in the military.

When he says "In the Army they cut you down for being honest". The term I use to describe such people are "failure to adapt" (which seems to be a common military term). Most likely he disagreed with why were are in Afghanistan, and that's his right. But what he sees as the truth isn't what the vast majority of people see as the truth.

He just wasn't cut to be in the military, just like that guy that gave all of that info to wikileaks.

An alternative view is that perhaps the US military (and all militaries) need way more people who think like Bowe Bergdahl and Bradley Manning...

The problem is that no matter how this played out, conservatives would find the angle that gives them a new scandal.

ANyone able to snoop out why Obama didn't alert congress as per the law? This wasn't some top secret extraction, shit's been negotiating for years.

I googed around but couldn't track down anything

This is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind limber.

Man you guys have your head so firmly up Obama's ass, you haven't seen the daylight of his deeds in 5 years now!

He's prepping his pen for the executive order to vacate GITMO.

He's a bad leader, if he was a good one, it would have been done right

Take a look buddy, they are calling me out, I have a simple rule, call me out and you get what you get.

The people that I'm calling names are putting me down, so they get what they get.

Mark Prince is a cheese dick, anyone that would call Canada home and complain about the republicans in our country to the extent he does is a cheese dick.

And Rochard, he keeps telling everyone he has me on ignore but he sure seems to get into it with me a lot, don't you think?

Bit of a trollish behavior

Oh the outrage. Oh my god, Obama, Obama, Obama.. It's pretty sad that Republicans will play fake political games over the release of a US soldier whom was held captive. You would think that if there was one thing fuck head republicans could get behind would be supporting our troops. Those in service, out of service and those whom were captive.

Why do you hate the troops serving this country Vendzilla? You do what ever you have to do, to get our guys back, end of story. If you weren't such a rage filled asshat you might of seen the release of an American soldier as a good thing. But no Fox News tells you to be outraged so you bitch and moan like a good little brainless minion.

You know, I'm still waiting to hear from the outrage over the VA hospital waiting lists. I see none. Liberals here are picking and choosing their fights. Obama promised to fix this, 5 years later, it's worse, they have been talking about this for a while and nothing is done.
Vets should be treated better than that Mr President and traitors should not be treated that good!

It does not matter, he can be a deserter or a traitor, but he is still an American soldier until he is court marshaled or discharged. There is no ifs ans or buts.. He is still a solder and our govt had to responsibility to do whatever it takes to get him back. He can be judged later, but as a captive he was still,a soldier.

As far as work, I have 2 screens open

I really don`t get our outrage about not '' consulting/informing '' the Afghan government ... really strange ...

Since when the USA gives a fuck about another government ( aside from Israhell) when they have their agenda ...

Did they ask Pakistan before the OBL raid ? No .....

What surprises me as well is that Obama, as good a liar as he is , did not twist this thing in a fantastic rescue operation, like the Jessica Lynch Movie of the week ....

Anyway ... I dont give a shit about the POW or the Gitmo guys ... they could have all stayed were they were and rot away

Truth of the matter is no one really knows what happened with this guy. But its really a sad day when i see our own military turn on this guy with out knowing wtf happened. No one seen him walk off or seen him captured but all these arm chair politicians think the know it all on here.

The Army did not have him listed as a deserter but as a pow and while he was captured he got two promotions if i remember right. Correct me if i am wrong but does the military give promotions to someone who is listed as a deserter?

From what I have read about the others in his unit, he deserted. During war time, that's being put to death offence. It's that serious. Says it right in the UCMJ.

My outrage is about the way it was done, with no concern about putting more terrorist back in the world, by the way he dealed with what is suppose to be our ally and the fact that this guy we got back, is a deserter, which in my book is lower than a politician.

And it sticks me hard that this is just something to stop us from talking about Obama's major fuck up with the VA hospitals. Something he promised he was going to fix.

If he didn't do anything or went to Congress to give thirty days notice, this would have dragged out, ended in disaster, and the President would have looked bad. On the other hand, he moved forward with it.... And we all see what's happening.

Someone mentioned that Obama did this by executive order and it's obvious why - This way he's covered so that the Republican party cannot make a stink about it.

I was listening to the news on my way down and McCain was interviewed. He said something to the effect of "We don't send troops into harm's way to rescue POWs". McCain was a POW in Vietnam, and he knows damn well we sent troops in to rescue handfuls of POWs. I just read a book called D-Days of the Pacific that detailed how they sent in troops deep into enemy territory ahead of the main force to rescue POWs.

I lost all respect for McCain. When he was Governor of Arizona he was great. He went to Vietnam, called them gooks, and had no fucking regrets. He was getting nailed hard in the press but he stuck to his guns saying "Politically correct is one thing, but the gooks locked up me and tortured me for five years".

What a horrible and evil thing for a former US Navy pilot and POW to say. Sure thing, we'll just shrug our shoulders and look the other way from now on.

Truth is no one knows what happened yet. Now this guy has been blaster as a deserter
in the media

"Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will face an investigation and a potential court martial if the Army finds that he deserted his unit in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey said Tuesday. The 28-year-old Bergdahl was "innocent until proven guilty," Dempsey said. However, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff promised that "our Army's leaders will not look away from misconduct if it occurred."

Now if he is found guilty put him to death. But who are we to judge this guy we were not there and we don't know the facts. Hell the people that were there don't wtf happened all they know was he was gone.

Was also wondering what you think should happen to the guys who signed the non disclosure agreement with the Army agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl's disappearance and the efforts to recapture him. I see they are all over all the
media outlets right now

"On Tuesday, BuzzFeed identified Richard Grenell, who once served as an aide to U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton and later worked for Mitt Romney?s 2012 presidential campaign, as playing a key role in publicizing Bergdahl's critics."

I'm more concerned about the asshat that made them sign a non disclosure agreement to be honest. I have never heard of a NDA used in the military. Except when you are discharged. I had a secret clearance and signed one when I got out. They have time limits.

Having deserters during war time doesn't look good to command.

That's bullshit. With a mentality like that it pretty much means that he is beyond criticism because any criticism will be deemed to be racist. A leader who can't be criticized for anything can do pretty much whatever he wants. He might as well be Kim Jong-un.

Besides that he's not black he's mulatto. Describing him as black only is racist in itself.

I don't know if that is the case or not, but if it is, the American public is in for a few surprises. It's very possible Hillary will win, and after that it's highly likely that we will have a Hispanic in office.

One of my good friends is married to a black man, and has two children with him. (One of them is my godson.) It's odd because she was a Republican through and through and the moment Obama ran she completely switched over to the other side. I think it's because of the racial issue.
