3 months ago. It affected a small 2 inch part of my back. Didn't hurt, didn't burn. The nerve damage that followed was worse

Thankfully the nerve damage was temporary and all fine now.

Shingles once hit a friend of my hard and scarred him ( literally and emotionally ) for life. i consider myself extremely fortunate.

it was my understanding that if you had chicken pox, you wouldn't get shingles.. but apparently there is now articles saying you will get shingles, and you better buy the vaccine just to be safe

My dad had it when I was a kid. Nasty looking thing on the side of his chest and up into his arm pit. Said it was quite painful at the time but it was treated and went away and he did not get any nerve damage or after effects of any kind. I had chicken pox twice when I was a kid, doubt i will get shingles.

dude it has to be a ploy.. i have been around people with pox/shingles and never remotely had an issue. (got it in kindergarten)

my mothers side of the family all have a nursing background, and this is where i learned it from..

Juicy's right. Shingles is the chicken pox virus that stays dormant your system. If you've never been exposed to chicken pox, you can't get Shingles. You also can't 'catch' Shingles. It just happens, usually if your immune system is down (which is why older folks get it more frequently).

And it's a bitch. My mom had it when she was going through chemo. Not fun.

That's wrong, if you have ever had chicken pox then you carry the virus for shingles. It's just dormant and can be triggered if your immune system is weak for some reason. My mother just went through breast cancer and she ended up with shingles due to her immune system being vulnerable.

Pretty much if you have ever had chicken pox you are at risk of getting shingles for the rest of your life.

A lot of people think you can't get the chicken pox more than once either, it's not very common, but it does happen.

I have had shingles before. Painful as hell. Lasted two weeks then went away.

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus so that means you have to have chickenpox before you can get shingles.

A family member has been going through a bout of shingles for almost a full year. It's brutal. She got it in the forehead and temples just above the eyes - and the pain is excruciating. She's on major painkillers (including morphine) throughout the day that have affected her speech (she stutters). She's developed a sensitivity to light and noise. It's really sidelined her activities, unfortunately.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

finally, i went on daily doses of Acyclovir, which is also prescribed for herpes..

I got it at 32ish it was fucking horrible. It's generally worse the older you are when you first get it, I'm just glad I didn't get them on the inside of my eyelids, my throat, my asshole, cock etc like some people get them. I got them everywhere else though.. something like 60 of them on my face and I now have 3 pockmarks where I had pretty flawless skin beforehand. Of course it was fully my own fault. I'd had a script for chickenpox vaccine on my desk for something like 6 months after a friend of a friend had it and got it on the inside of their eyelids and their throat. But after I got the script and the immediate thought about how fucked up it was had passed I just left it there. When I randomly got it half a year later I really had only myself to blame, could have had a good chance of avoiding it entirely or at least having a minor outbreak. So annoying.

Acyclovir helps, but most people don't realize what they have until they are knocked down by the shingles. Had it for almost 2 months, 3 weeks was bedridden, in terrible pain.
Craziest part it covered my torso. But only the right side, went from the breast bone to the back bone. I called to doc's office on a Sunday, so when I described it over the phone, the nurse was pretty sure it was shingles.
It was kind of like getting poison ivy. If the blisters broke, the liquid would spread the blisters. You need to constantly use alcohol of hydrogen peroxide to keep clean.

I was stricken with the shingles just this past October, and it did a number on me and I was only 47 years old then. It started with blisters appearing on my forehead and each day and they kept spreading more and more, I would keep putting neosporin on it but it didn't help. After four days I called the doctor and the nurse said I likely had shingles and I went in, it was painful but I got on it pretty early so it wasn't as bad as some stories I've heard. They prescribed me the meds and I started taking it, after a week it was getting better but my vision was getting more blurry. Went back to the doctor and he sent to the eye doctor, and the shingles got in my eye!! My vision had deteriorated to where I couldn't read scores on the TV during football games, and even using the computer to read this forum or reddit was a struggle. The eye doctor jumped on it and gave me these medicated drops, starting off I had to put eight drops in my eye each day for a week which burned like crazy. Then I went to four drops a day for the next month but it didn't burn at all with that dosage, then down to two for a couple of weeks until I finished off what I had. The sores kept coming back somewhat but I think its all gone now and I'm feeling normal again, I have a scar on my forehead that looks like I got hit with something. I went to the eye doctor last week for a full exam and he says my eyes are all good, the shingles left a slight scar on my cornea but I can see ok so I'm thankful for that. I make my living on the computer so if I lost my vision that would have totally fucked me up. I heard different theories from the doctors as to whether its contagious or not, I came to the conclusion that they just don't know. It's a mysterious illness I hope I never have to deal with it again, if you are old enough for the vaccine I suggest you get it!!!!!!!!!!

Luckily I jumped on it before it got too painful, I think there was just one day that I can say I was in true agony but that was right after I started getting treated. It was a week later when I went back because of my vision, didn't have any pain in my eye but everything was getting more and more blurry each day. Very scary to say the least.
