I wonder why theking thinks Rochard needs somebody fighting his battles for him...... least of all somebody that nobody seems to respect anyway.

It's the paul markham of the army. You really think being in the army, or in fact any of the services, means those people are somehow 'better' than anyone else, or that people should be thankful/amazed/respectful purely becauseof your career choice? Of course it doesn't. 95% of the people on this planet have helped others, and positively touched lives in ways they can't even comprehend - your career choice alone isn't the standard by which you should be measured, even if you think so. You 'served' your country, and 'served' with blah blah division - oh what a sacrifice. People 'serve' their employers every day, and 'serve' with their co-workers, the difference is they aren't brainwashed into believing they are special because they 'serve' and not 'work for'.

Hey, it's great that people are in the military, etc, they do a great job, are often needed, and help a load of people out. Just like hundreds of millions of other people in employment.

oh you army guys and your "serve my country" diarrhea

the army is basically the cesspool of humanity...if you cant get a decent job as a decent person (doctor/lawyer/engineer/athlete ect) you join all the other rejects and begin a make-believe-life-as-a-hero

just fucking admit it...no successful person would voluntarily sign up to go live like a fucking pig in some desert and get shot at over moron US politics...it has fuck to do with patriotism...99% of people who join the army do it either because they are financially poor or genetically poor...

faith in the US army by its followers is right up there with radical religion...you can put out undeniable facts like "you fucking delusional moron the US is in no danger whatsoever LOL" but it never really had anything to do with patriotism in the first place, it was either the army or burger king...ok some had the misfortune of having parents in the army and had to follow "Tradition"

takes no balls at all to join the #1 military super power in the world and then bully force drafted 3rd world civilians who never wanted any fight with you but you decided to fly the fuck over and invade anyway...you are all pussies and you know it...we all think you are pussies and it is painfully obvious to anybody with an IQ higher than a potato...are you getting a "heroes welcome" on this board? no? theres a good reason for that sport

now go back to your bar and your war stories, go tell some tool how you are a hero for dropping a bomb on some 3rd world farmer from 30.000 feet and how you saved 'merica because that farmer was producing rice of mass destruction!

These guys arent the sharpest tools in the shed for sure. I said things to theking and Rochard pops in saying "i didn't say that". I said things to Rochard and theking says he never said that. I quote Rochard and theking say's Rochard never said that and so on.

I get irritated with the "serving something bigger than yourself" rhetoric and implying they are better than others because of their service because they also put themselves in the same category of "i'm proud of my service" and "serving others" as those who enlisted to fight in WWI and WWII or the Civil War etc who enlisted specifically to fight for what they believed was right, to help others and did so knowing they weren't coming home... but made the choice to sacrifice themselves and their lives for others. Its insulting to those who actually sacrificed and made the choice to do so willingly as an adult.

It's all just the rhetoric that gets beat into their heads daily while in the military until they just can't separate fact from fiction anymore. That makes for an useful soldier. Rochard woke up every single day and did his job. He did his job, he was well compensated. He was never at risk. For that, he's so "proud" that it has to be mentioned daily. Then has the balls to ask "what have you done to be proud of" to smugly compare it to his non achievement. As if another 6 billion people across the world aren't doing the exact same thing.

I was just thinking....
My uncle joined the Navy.
He joined the Navy for the college tuition.
He was so well paid and had so much free time, that he raced motorcycles professionally while serving in the Navy.

If he would have ever said any of the things said in this thread, i would have beat the shit out of him. Luckily, he's a bright guy and loves to laugh about his time in the Navy and how good he had it.

And has been pointed out... these guys will spend their lives "proud" of a non accomplishment where in many parts of the world its compulsory.

It's fucking insane that people who have done nothing in their lives that's remotely athletic, like theking thinks it take an exceptional human being to wake up at 5:30 or to run a 8 minute mile. The whole world is full of people that wake up and do it for work and for fun. Or that its such a great honer to get cornered by a military recruiter trolling Wallmart parking lots for kids who live below the poverty line.

And for the record, waking up one day in war time and making the decision to go fight because you believe deeply that you are fighting for what is right is "service". I respect that no matter who does it. Even the Taliban. That takes conviction and strength of character.

Waking up one day in peacetime and after seeing a Kid Rock commercial promoting the military and thinking "i'm tired of gang banging" or "i'm tired of being poor and will never afford college", or "i hate my parents, i'm out of here - that looks really cool!" etc and then going to join the military for the pay/training/education and student loans does not make you a better person than anyone else. It means you went and found gainful employment.

It certainly does not put you in the same class of people that willingly joined the military and willingly gave their lives for what was right and for the future, safety and security of others.

I don't see this at all. Generally speaking, people who served in the Army consider their four years or whatever as a job, nothing more, nothing less. It's a little bit different when you are in the Airborne or Rangers.

But that's not true at all. You said I bragged about being a Marine 2-3 times a day, when the truth is it was less than 300 times in 28k posts over 12 years. And in most those cases I wasn't bragging at all, but merely indicating a period of time when I was younger.

You guys are the high school quarterbacks taking about that one play, 40 years later and it's pretty sad.

In other news, I just watched the HBO movie Taking Chance, quite an eye-opener as to where at least some of the pride comes from that most Marines feel. While I sort of knew, I had no idea the full level of respect, care and protocol that Marines put in to escorting one of thier fallen home.

Great flick.

That's partially true.

My family has a long history of Marines. My grandfather was a Marine, and my father died a Marine in Vietnam. When I was in middle school I dreamed of being a Marine. By high school I had it all figured it out - I was working in a local restaurant and enrolled in the culinary classes at the high school - we had a restaurant open to the public built into the high school. My buddy and I planned on joining the Marines to become cooks, and then planned to go onto culinary college.

However, life got in the way, I dropped out of high school, left home, and got involved heavily in drugs. I saw that my life was heading downhill, a Marine recruiter got in touch with me, and I signed up.

I didn't join the Marines because I was a junkie. I joined the Marines because I wanted to join the Marines since I was about ten.

Rochard, I think it's great you turned your life around and great that you found direction in life. But people keep making fun of you about it because you never stop bringing it up. It has nothing to do with "marines" as much as it has to do with non stop references to something 20 years or more in your past.

Good on you for having the self awareness at that age, and doing something about it Huge respect to you for that, sincerely (not that my saying that has any weight or anything).

note to theking - *that's* something to be very proud of

But I don't bring it up nearly as often as you think, and when I do I don't brag about it.

I too come from a long military linage. My dad was a Major in the Army...and served in Vietnam...his father served in the Army during the Second World War...his father served in the First World War. I had multiple relatives that served during the Civil War on both sides.

After attending college for two years and getting an associate degree...I was tired of school so I enlisted in '80. PF wanted me to get a Bachelor Degree before I enlisted so I could become an Officer like he once was...but I really did not want to be an officer at the time.

murder is not a "job"...gun for hire is not a profession...you are rationalizing murder for politics...you sound like the thugs in my ex-country that had "patriotic" reasons to "Defend" their "homeland" and gave themselves the green light to murder "................." (insert ethnicity in blank space) because it was in the "line of duty" and their "job"...

oh and your country is in ab-so-fucking-lutely NO danger at all...fucking be a man and admit it ..."allah akbar" and "protect the motheland" is the same fucking delusional radical brainwash...just fucking admit it: the USA is in NO danger

the US army is right up there with radical islam...only the US army kills much much much much much much much more civilians, but is protected by the US double standard and pure arrogance of most americans...
