I have to agree with many points made here by Colmike, Baddog, etc.

Yes you can eat healthy in the states, it won't matter if you don't exercise.

When you go to the major metropolitan areas where people use mass transit and walk more, the average person is slimmer. I've worked in downtown Chicago, Denver and New York.

For example, in Chicago each day started with walking a km from my home to the train station, walked 2 km each way from the train to the office. Walked all over town for lunch. I would lose weight just trying to decide what I wanted each day ;-)

The difference from North to South is also fairly evident. When it is warm in the North, people get outside to enjoy it, because winter will be here too soon. But in the South, since Air Conditioning became common, people hide inside from the heat. I've lived in Texas 3 times over the past 30 years, and the change from 1980 to 2006 was noticeable.

Our kids start fat now because they sit on their asses, watch TV and play video games.

Their parents drop them off and pick them up from school every day. When I was a kid, we walked to and from school every day, my Mom allowed us 30 minutes of TV each night - if you were bored or it was raining - read. Weekends and summer we were out the door in the morning, as soon as chores were finished, and played all day. Fast food and junk food was never part of our diet.

I eat poorly, drink excessively, suffer from lactose and wheat intolerance, yet still managed to attract girls 15 to 30 years younger than me. Even though I'm 5'10 and 200+ lbs, my Doctor says my blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels are all great for my age. It is because I exercise regularly. It's that simple.

I should not, I'm not at all exceptional in this regard. All of the kids I grew up with from my old neighborhood still look good too. Amazing what good parenting can do for a kids future.

When Tracy and I go out for dinner now we always buy 1 meal and share it. It's not the price, it's just the insane amount of food they pile onto the plate. We feel guilty eating it all, and we feel guilty wasting some, and we pay too much for that so why bother? Sharing a meal is so much better all the way around. Restaurants need to figure this out. We would be happy even they charged 2% less and gave 50% less food, and they would make more money too.

I agree that general lifestyle plays a huge role, in that people who never walk farther than it takes to get from the front door to the car will gain weight over time, but diet really is the biggest factor in body mass. I work out like a fiend but if I ate like a typical North American (we're getting pretty bad up here in Canada as well) I'd be huge.

Very few peole can drink vats of sugary drinks and eat huge plates brimming with fried foods and not look like a house. It's crazy that those types of diets are considered normal to many.

You can pretty much eat whatever you want within reason if you have the lean body mass to support it. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate is and the more you need to "feed the machine" so to speak. Muscle is active and live, where as fat is not and requires no calories to be maintained.

It also has a lot to do with cheap corn syrup and high carb, genetically modified wheat products. The least expensive food is loaded with high fructose corn syrup and genetically modified, starchy wheat. This stuff has only been around since the 70s, and even the wheat is different today (low protein, high sugar, high yield). These foods trigger insulin levels which creates bounce back hunger and overeating. The same crap is fed to most the livestock. Being obese in America is a good indicator of poor economic standing. It takes planning, and often a bit extra $ to eat well. In a society of hand-out Obama voters, they're gonna hit the dollar menu first.

The large fries (aka chips) available at McDonald's is 5.4 ounces; small is 2.5 oz. A large cola is 32 oz; the regular is 16. You are saying McD's in Oz are smaller portions?

here in canada a supersize was the equivalent of an american large at mcdonalds. though i think the've since gotten rid of the supersize.

i have a habit of doing that sometimes. all i know is when i go out to eat at a chain type family restaurant, its way too much food but if i go to some tendy joint downtown its much smaller healthier foods (typically) for more money.

I eat like that, but I'm in shape because I'm constantly doing something active. I even do a lot of my programming at a park, either in a tree or up on this observation deck, since it's more fun than being at home. ;)

Having come back to the States after so many years in Europe, what I have noticed is how it is nearly impossible to get a normal sized candy bar or a small single serving bag of chips. Everything is some 'now with more' or jumbo size.

Of course they don't and they don't have to buy it either. I simply make the choice not to buy it and avoid the temptation. However, most people reach for what they see, open and consume.

I really like that California has calorie counts on just about everything at fast food or chain restaurants. I mentioned that to friends when I moved here and most of them hadn't even noticed it. For me, it is a really good mental trainer. I have trouble mentally justifying something that is over X amount of calories when I have worked so hard over the years to drop weight. I am sure most people that go to Starbucks, for example, have no real idea of the calorie count in the frappe or any of those sliced cakes. I can't even eat anything at most chain restaurants because the calorie counts on even their most basic dishes are often nearly my entire daily allowance. I wonder how many people pic up those nutritional guides that are on tables and actually read them.

I mentioned that to friends when I moved here and most of them hadn't even noticed it. For me, it is a really good mental trainer. I have trouble mentally justifying something that is over X amount of calories when I have worked so hard over the years to drop weight. I am sure most people that go to Starbucks, for example, have no real idea of the calorie count in the frappe or any of those sliced cakes. I can't even eat anything at most chain restaurants because the calorie counts on even their most basic dishes are often nearly my entire daily allowance. I wonder how many people pic up those nutritional guides that are on tables and actually read them.
