California webmasters: where will you be eating foie gras before the ban?

Where are you going to get your foie gras on before the ban takes effect on July 1?

Here's a good list for San Francisco peeps.

We have a difference of opinion. I eat foie gras and don't see it as inhumane. Neither do many chefs.

Don't like it, don't eat it.

Monique Niccole, is that you in your avatar? You just don't look like a consumer of foie gras to me.

Edit: I guess I was wrong once again. When it comes to food, I rarely care about what a "chef" thinks. 99% (pulled that number out of my ass, btw, could be 98%...) of them are overpaid, arrogant, horrendously fat fucks that will eat anything.

I stopped watching Iron Chef America after watching Mario Batali's multiple chins drip sweat into the food he was "preparing". Made me gag. I can't even look at that fat, sweaty, butter-snacking fuck without feeling sick anymore. Never eat anything cooked by a fat man in a hot kitchen. Serious consumer advice right there.

Foie Gras. Shark Fin Soup. Dog. Delicacies all. Yum.

Enjoy.

I'm not sure that I support a law for this considering all the other terrible things it's still totally legal to do to animals, but I'm also not sure what the hell a chef's opinion about what's humane has to do with anything. It's not like a foie gras chef is going to say "yes, it's really terrible and cruel. Now eat up! Yum!"

Monique please don't be a dumb ignorant selfish cunt, foie gras is a horrible industry. Be proud you live in a region where they finally ban it. I live in France where it's a huge legal industry. By eating it, you contribute to the suffering and there are good tasty cruelty free alternatives, even vegetarian.

There's a few shots of Foie Gras production in the preview video on this site http://www.earthlings.com

So what part of force-feeding battery animals do you think is humane?

http://www.villagevoice.com/slidesho...s-made-245963/

I don't like it, and I won't eat it. But I will certainly take a few minutes out of my day to explain why I don't like it.

Please, educate me, why is it OK to force feed battery animals in your book?

In China you'll find chefs who live skin a cat or dog and then boil it when it's still alive and tell you that there's nothing inhuman about it and that it tastes great.

I like the things Gordon Ramsey did against shark finning. Does anyone know what he thinks of foie gras?

I'm in between meetings, so I don't have a ton of time, but here's an article by Serious Eats on the ethics of foie gras tied to the difference in physiology between ducks and humans -- no gag reflex for ducks.

http://www.seriouseats.com/2010/12/t...-is-not-u.html

There was also a Bourdain episode where he visited a foie gras farm (France, I believe) and you could see the ducks running to be fed.

Feel free to look for it.

There are thousands of videos on the web showing that these animals suffer. Please show one video showing these animals being comfortable running to be fed. I would say it's impossible because they're being overfed, so they can't have any apetite.

The early production of foie gras as it was invented in Egypt (centuries ago) was humane. They just got as much food as they wanted to eat without being forced fed. The production took much longer of course but at least these ducks weren't suffering. The only reason why they're being forced fed today is because people want to produce more on a smaller surface and in shorter periods of time. So it all comes down to human greed, again.

Also I ate it once, not knowing what it was, and it didn't even taste great.

You have longer than 20 days. From the comments:

"Foie gras is not going to disappear! California is not outlawing it. The issue is about force feeding animals. A restaurant, chef, or whoever is still allowed to use and sell foie gras as long as they purchase it from a place that does not force feed the birds.

You can read the chaptered bill at: http://leginfo.ca.gov/pub/03-04/bill/sen/sb_1501-1550/sb_1520_bill_20040929_chaptered.pdf"

And here's the Bourdain episode on foie gras farming.

I'm all for healthy discourse around the ethics of food -- not just foie gras, but all of it.

If you're going to be concerned about foie gras, be concerned about the way all of your food is being raised and handled.

There's plenty of room to argue on both sides whether all force-feeding is bad or whether some farms do a better job at being humane than others.

That said, the new laws that go into effect on July 1 are a big deal here in CA and as such, there are foie gras farewell dinners and post-ban foie gras speakeasies being planned all over town. I love food, love foie gras, and plan to take in as much of this part of SF food culture before it changes.

I guess you guys have not seen procedures like cow insemination and 2 week chicken breeding before they are killed by throat cutting on a line. These are normal practice in the meat industry.

Force feeding is not unusual. My gradma used to force feed the geese when breeding them.

There are much worse things that happen when it comes to animal cruelty.

If any of you could staunch the flow of blood from your bleeding hearts and actually spend some time around geese you would probably encourage the practice. They are nasty, brutal creatures that gang rape and brutalize each other and most other living creatures on a daily basis. Foie gras is merely God's retribution for the violent and angry way those birds chastize the rest of the animal kingdom while shitting on everything they possibly can.

At least imo.

What goes around comes around. The ducks are going to have the last laugh when you keel over and die because your arteries get clogged from all the fat and cholesterol in foie gras.

Let's cage and force feed you and see how you like it.

It's no way for any animal to treated.

If it is a cruel practice (which I can't argue with) then ban the animal cruelty.... don't ban the food.

Banning a particular food opens up a can of worms (which I have actually eaten as well - I prefer the Foie Gras over the worms).

Forgive Far-L, however in a way I kinda understand where he's coming from...

During my childhood years, I lived in a house nearby where Far-L now lives (true story), and there is both a lake, as well as a zoo not far away, that are home to the meanest honkin' goose colonies in the known universe.

That video is exactly what I am talking about. Note the gang mentality of the one jumping in and the way the other one appears to be raping and ripping him up at the same time. Pernicious, vile, evil and pestilent beasts. A quick death is far too humane. The human thing to do is to torture them mercilessly then kill them and eat their livers with some fava beans and a glass of chianti.
