Myspace e-mailed my webhost today..

The story is like this

All kinds of Myspace users have hotlinked a certain flash file on my domain.

Well instead of letting them eat the bandwidth up I decided to pop a URL from the swf.

Myspace e-mailed my host and had them remove the file. ( because it had adult stuff in the popup )

I seen my file was changed and replaced it with a popup that didn't have adult images on it.

Myspace e-mailed my host again and now I'm locked out of my flash directory.

and I'm kind of pissed that myspace can control the internet like this...

Shouldnt they only be allowed to control their user base..

Not to mention I'm not at all that pleased with my webhost.. Thinking about cancelling.

am I wrong ? Lol

JamesK2 02-02-2006 09:34 PM

You're not wrong. Switch hosts ASAP. I wouldn't feel safe at a host like that.

artman 02-02-2006 09:34 PM

what host do you use? thats fucked up

bbe 02-02-2006 09:35 PM

No, Tom does indeed control the internet.

slapass 02-02-2006 09:35 PM

The host should let you know of the complaint. But over the line to change it. Was it making good $$$? I saw a site for sale that had tons of hotlinking from myspace.

Edit - I just emailed you and if want to icq 166708909

BoyAlley 02-02-2006 09:35 PM

You need a new host. If my host touched ANY files on my site like that i'd drop their asses before they got done pressing the delete key.

It's not their place, period.

And myspace can go fuck themselves

pindrop 02-02-2006 09:36 PM

sounds like bullshit to me, I would really think about dropping that host unless they have a really neat/nice story to back up what they did...

ie; idiot level 1 tech who has been on the job for 2 days

budz 02-02-2006 09:36 PM

The webhost is Webgemshosting.

brand0n 02-02-2006 09:36 PM

thats fucking nuts.

drop that host pronto

EdgeXXX 02-02-2006 09:38 PM

Find yourself a decent Hosting Company, because MySpace has NO grounds to have anything that is being hotlinked (essential stolen) from your server removed.

Libertine 02-02-2006 09:39 PM

Change hosts immediately.

You also have a good case against the host legally, since they cost you money by changing your content without any sound legal basis.

budz 02-02-2006 09:43 PM

wow, received a reply to my support ticket

says they have to check with the admin about giving me access to my directory again, nuts.

till then I think I'll try a 301 redirect.

milan 02-02-2006 09:46 PM

I will give you a free site hosting just to piss them off :thumbsup

Hit me up...

opulence 02-02-2006 09:47 PM

I'd sue :stoned

budz 02-02-2006 09:49 PM

i guess their 403 overrides my 301

czarina 02-02-2006 09:52 PM

Hire an attorney. Sue myspace.

WiredGuy 02-02-2006 09:52 PM

I'd leave that host. They don't have any right to respond to myspace's complaint without hearing back from you.

I agree with the fag. :) :)

Halcyon 02-02-2006 10:17 PM

That is scary.

Did your pop up have a warning page? was it explicit?

budz 02-02-2006 10:20 PM

hehe, the first page I popped was kinda explicit www.voyeurz.tv

soo after the first myspace complaint I changed it to www.freeez.net & www.youre.nu - nothing really bad there

abadfish 02-02-2006 10:21 PM

That's not cool at all. Definitely find a new host and Myspace has power... News Corp. bought Myspace for something like 580million last summer.

FUCKuPAYme 02-02-2006 10:23 PM

Tom said he wanted to

KrisKross 02-02-2006 10:28 PM

Did you make any money doing it?

AmateurFlix 02-02-2006 10:28 PM

your host is fucked for having done this, but it doesn't even make any sense - why wouldn't myspace edit the html on their own servers instead of asking someone else to change the file on yours?

when you get that new account at a real host you ought to pop up www.*******.com and let myspace enjoy that for a while instead.

Matt 26z 02-02-2006 10:34 PM

The host should have just canned your account to protect themselves from MySpace.

This isn't a MySpace user issue. They did not choose to pop the porn site, you did.

Baker Rd 02-02-2006 10:34 PM

You have every right to pop whatever the fuck you want. If myspace has a problem with it, they can deny your servers IP address.

Drop that host immediately.

You are kidding me right? Myspace retards hotlink his file and you have the nerve to tell him it is his fault. Nigga, please!

Considering what he did, I'm going to disagree with this.

There are MANY companies who provide various types of content for free to go on MySpace profiles, and they simply cannot be allowed to switch that content out with something else for advertising purposes.

If you want to advertise on MySpace, talk to their advertising department.

Just imagine if one of the music video providers started popping ads. Stuff like that just doesn't fly. Put yourself in MySpace's position. Especially with the media taking a closer look at the content of their profiles. They can't have XXX popups on the profiles. This is just common sense.

I'd like to know what planet some of you are living on.

Read the post before replying. Myspace were hotlinking his file. He can do anything he wants with it, since it's on his server. If I have a popup ad on my page, and someone iframes it into their page, it's not my fault a popup appears on their page - same reasoning here.

If myspace doesnt like it, they can remove the file from their servers.

Webgems = blacklist for being morons, they should have at least consulted the guy first. Change hosts ASAP.

Then they shouldn't allow their users the ability to place anything on their page that could generate a XXX popup.

The file is on the budz's server. If he wants the flash file to pop a XXX page, he's can do so. It's his bandwith, his flash file. If MySpace has a problem with that, it's up to them to remove the hotlinked flash file from their site.

I disagree.. he is not a media provider. He is just a guy with a flash movie on his server that people hotlink.

Rhetorical question: What if someone deliberately put HIS flash popping movie on their myspace profile? Why should he be penalized?

Like I said, Myspace has no right or authority to say what he has on his server. If they had a problem with it, they can block his server from their networks. If that was my host, I would already be moved and have the file back online popping up on Myspace.

MySpace does not know if their users "illegally" hotlinked or if they got the hotlink from a site offering up free materials for MySpace profiles.

The owner of the file chose to allow the hotlinking to take place for some period of time, and then caused XXX advertising popups to appear on MySpace instead of implementing .htaccess.

Pete-KT 02-02-2006 10:53 PM

If my host ever touched a file on my server they would be gone in a heartbeat, thy can contact me and I will decide what to do not them.
