Myspace e-mailed my webhost today..

The story is like this

All kinds of Myspace users have hotlinked a certain flash file on my domain.

Well instead of letting them eat the bandwidth up I decided to pop a URL from the swf.

Myspace e-mailed my host and had them remove the file. ( because it had adult stuff in the popup )

I seen my file was changed and replaced it with a popup that didn't have adult images on it.

Myspace e-mailed my host again and now I'm locked out of my flash directory.

and I'm kind of pissed that myspace can control the internet like this...

Shouldnt they only be allowed to control their user base..

Not to mention I'm not at all that pleased with my webhost.. Thinking about cancelling.

am I wrong ? Lol

You're not wrong. Switch hosts ASAP. I wouldn't feel safe at a host like that.

The host should let you know of the complaint. But over the line to change it. Was it making good $$$? I saw a site for sale that had tons of hotlinking from myspace.

Edit - I just emailed you and if want to icq 166708909

You need a new host. If my host touched ANY files on my site like that i'd drop their asses before they got done pressing the delete key.

It's not their place, period.

And myspace can go fuck themselves

sounds like bullshit to me, I would really think about dropping that host unless they have a really neat/nice story to back up what they did...

ie; idiot level 1 tech who has been on the job for 2 days

Find yourself a decent Hosting Company, because MySpace has NO grounds to have anything that is being hotlinked (essential stolen) from your server removed.

Change hosts immediately.

You also have a good case against the host legally, since they cost you money by changing your content without any sound legal basis.

your host is fucked for having done this, but it doesn't even make any sense - why wouldn't myspace edit the html on their own servers instead of asking someone else to change the file on yours?

when you get that new account at a real host you ought to pop up www.*******.com and let myspace enjoy that for a while instead.

The host should have just canned your account to protect themselves from MySpace.

This isn't a MySpace user issue. They did not choose to pop the porn site, you did.

You have every right to pop whatever the fuck you want. If myspace has a problem with it, they can deny your servers IP address.

Considering what he did, I'm going to disagree with this.

There are MANY companies who provide various types of content for free to go on MySpace profiles, and they simply cannot be allowed to switch that content out with something else for advertising purposes.

If you want to advertise on MySpace, talk to their advertising department.

Just imagine if one of the music video providers started popping ads. Stuff like that just doesn't fly. Put yourself in MySpace's position. Especially with the media taking a closer look at the content of their profiles. They can't have XXX popups on the profiles. This is just common sense.

Read the post before replying. Myspace were hotlinking his file. He can do anything he wants with it, since it's on his server. If I have a popup ad on my page, and someone iframes it into their page, it's not my fault a popup appears on their page - same reasoning here.

If myspace doesnt like it, they can remove the file from their servers.

Webgems = blacklist for being morons, they should have at least consulted the guy first. Change hosts ASAP.

Then they shouldn't allow their users the ability to place anything on their page that could generate a XXX popup.

The file is on the budz's server. If he wants the flash file to pop a XXX page, he's can do so. It's his bandwith, his flash file. If MySpace has a problem with that, it's up to them to remove the hotlinked flash file from their site.

I disagree.. he is not a media provider. He is just a guy with a flash movie on his server that people hotlink.

Rhetorical question: What if someone deliberately put HIS flash popping movie on their myspace profile? Why should he be penalized?

Like I said, Myspace has no right or authority to say what he has on his server. If they had a problem with it, they can block his server from their networks. If that was my host, I would already be moved and have the file back online popping up on Myspace.

MySpace does not know if their users "illegally" hotlinked or if they got the hotlink from a site offering up free materials for MySpace profiles.

The owner of the file chose to allow the hotlinking to take place for some period of time, and then caused XXX advertising popups to appear on MySpace instead of implementing .htaccess.

This isn't about Myspace protecting their profiles, this is about his webhost catering to the demands of some website that has no authority whatsoever.

In that case, it would be wise for myspace to allow only whitelisted content providers for flash content.

If it's my file, and on my server, they have no right to tell me what to do with it. There were no illegal activities nor ill intents from his side. He can do anything he wants to the file. If myspace doesn't the fact that people use his content on their profile pages, they can blacklist his server.

He has no contracts nor agreements with myspace to leave his files intact. Same with media providers - it's their right to start popping consoles. If myspace doesn't like such practice, they should blacklist flash files altogether.

Just imagine if one of the music video providers started popping ads. Stuff like that just doesn't fly. Put yourself in MySpace's position. Especially with the media taking a closer look at the content of their profiles. They can't have XXX popups on the profiles. This is just common sense.

I'd like to know what planet some of you are living on.
I don't know what planet YOU are living it. The users hotlinking the stuff are responsible... so they should get their account canned and myspace could block the url. That's it that's all. He can host whatever he wants on his site, if people steal it and put it there, it's not his fault...

There are MANY companies who provide various types of content for free to go on MySpace profiles, and they simply cannot be allowed to switch that content out with something else for advertising purposes.

If you want to advertise on MySpace, talk to their advertising department.

If I understood him in his initial post, he said that the myspacers have been burning his bandwidth unwittingly by linking to something that he had made for other purposes and was merely trying to mitigate the bandwidth cost by popping an ad. If My Space was mad they should have lectured their users... and if their users didn't mind then I do believe that he did nothing wrong certainly it didn't not warrant his hosts actions.

i would sue any webhost that modified my content without my approval.

unless you broke the toss of the hosting company and even then they have no right to touch your content the best they can do is disable your account.

You retarded fucking piece of shit, it's up to him to use .htaccess redirects now? People like you should unplug the fucking internet before you hurt yourselves.

I see what some of you guys are saying, and I actually agree with the basis of your opinions.

If I have a file on MY server for MY website and some MySpace users hotlink it and then I change that file to behave differently for use on MY website, then what happens at MySpace is irrelavent since the file was never meant to be there in the first place.

HOWEVER... and this is the part you guys are overlooking... this guy implemented the popup not for use on his website, but instead as a scheme to get free advertising on MySpace. That's where he was in the wrong.

That's fucked up. Switch hosts ASAP and put the same file in the same directory and really fuck with myspace, put a fucking friendster ad in there or some shit, just to fuck with them.

If my host did shit like that, they'd get a foot up da ass.

That's their problem. Legally you don't have the right to hotlink anything from any server without a written authorization... so he's right... and you are wrong.

He didn't "choose" to allow them to hotlink stuff... his site wasn't one of thoses sites where you can freely hotlink anything...

Why think of it as a scheme to get free advertising? Why not think of it as a way to re-coup his losses for all the bandwidth that MYSPACE STOLE FROM HIM?
