Obama's new START treaty

I'm all for getting the level of the stock pile down on nukes, they scared the hell out me when I handled them then, knowing that so many countries have them doesn't help me at all, but reading this article makes me wonder if Obama is trying to pass yet another piece of bad legislation on the American public, people hear what he says and say yes, but don't read the fine print.

The New START treaty with Russia that President Obama is eager to have the Senate ratify is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. We can start with the details of the treaty itself.

While the treaty claims to achieve nuclear parity with Russia?s arsenal, these reductions apply only to strategic nuclear weapons. Russia will maintain a 10-1 advantage in tactical weapons. Limits on delivery vehicles count U.S. conventional weapons vehicles, a provision that doesn?t factor in this country?s greater global deterrent responsibilities that require conventional weapons. And no mention is made of Russia?s previous START treaty violations, raising the question of how compliance will be assured this time around. And these are just a few of the provisions that make the treaty a bad deal for the U.S.

Worse yet, the Russians have put a diplomatic gun to America?s head. Several Russian officials have made it clear in a statement from the office of the Russian president that the treaty ?can operate and be viable only if the United States of America refrains from developing its missile defense capabilities quantitatively or qualitatively.?

In other words, the treaty is really about limiting our missile defense, which serves Russia?s interests since it cannot compete with America?s economic and technological advantages in new weapons development. This threat by Russia?s leaders suggests that they believed the Obama administration was so eager for an agreement that it could be taken to the diplomatic cleaners.

btw - Russia might join NATO and also join in on the missile defense. and the nuclear arsenal on both sides can destroy life on this planet multiple times anyways - also after START 2.

Who are all these people in NATO, and Russia if they join, protecting themselves from with the missile defense system? Aren't NATO countries about the only countries who have the capabilities of long range missiles?

we have enough nukes just on subs to wipe out the entire world...

when one country decides to use nukes, that will be the day the world comes to an end...

it is claimed this would protect us against Iran and North Korea - but it is neither clear if they have long range missiles, are about to develop them or will be ever able to build them. but the sense (or non-sense) of that thing is not the point here - it's about lowering nuclear warheads to 1500 each for the US and Russia - a number you would think that is far more than enough anyways

Well the right kept gumming up the works so recess appointments have to happen. Their goal is to have him fail they dont give fuck about how this country is suffering and Obama unfortunately was born without a spine.

Right now the US knows the extent of Russia's military arsenal, but come Dec 5th that will change unless this new treaty gets signed. You even have the head of the Russian military saying in public that come Dec 5th, Russia will begin deploying new missile technology throughout the country, because they'll no longer be under any obligation to allow the US to see what their arsenal is.

heh, I got a bit of a chuckle out of that too. You have both the US and Russia on the media boasting, "Yeah, we're awesome, because we're cutting our nuclear arsenal. No more 14,000 nukes for us! We're only going to have 8000 from now on.".
