Dyna Mo. Two other important things you can optimize that are really nice additions in $$$ is your 404 and 401 traffic ;)

Sticking with the theme of the thread (giving advice) here is another piece of advice for you: If you want to start shit and try to attack someone do it right. Don't do it half assed with the wrong information and don't be a pussy about it. If you want to be the dickhead that tries to steer the thread in a negative direction then man up and do it right. If not don't waste anyone's time (including yours) posting here. I appreciate your time but surely you could have done something more valuable to yourself than posting here
Im not pussying out, I just dont see a point starting a debate about the topic that have been proven in other topics before. It was not a attempt to steer the thread in a negative direction. My comment to prove the hypocracy, and I think I have made my point.

That means optimize and monetize your sites.

Running any type of site involves a lot of work. I've been doing this for 10 years now and I can honestly say there has never been a moment in those 10 years where I've felt like I had nothing to do to my sites. There is always something (and usually A SHITLOAD of somethings) to do.

In the past if you ran a site (paysite, tgp, whatever) and were not truly optimizing it you could survive and in most cases do very well. In the past year I've heard more and more people complain about how poorly they are doing and how badly their bottom line is being hit. When I visit their sites I see that a lot of those people are leaving a lot of money on the table. The beauty of optimizing your sites is in most cases it involves some initial work and then the money starts flowing in without much additional work required (obviously managing and optimizing further helps you make even more).

So do yourself a favor. Take a step back. Review every aspect of your site(s) and see where you are leaving money on the table. Now is the time to put in the work and get that money. In most cases it usually adds 100% to the bottom line so it increases your profitability.

It's worked very well for us so I'm sure it can help a few of you as well
Great advice! I hopefully have been doing just that.

Sure. I'm not sure how you made your point. First of all what does hypocracy mean? Do you mean hypocrisy?

Second of all I've never denied anything we've ever done. So I don't see what your point is.

Correct. It goes to another account. We actually cross sold to ourselves for a while and that didn't work out well.

This is exactly what I was saying to a fellow webmaster in vegas during xbiz. I'm not leaving any money on the table anymore that I know with a little work I can get. Already since the trip I'm already getting that money.

I just moved 3 servers to a new host and things are running great and it's cut overheard on those servers almost in half.

Exactly what i did !
Old domains, sitting there with shitty designs, almost no updates etc.. Just moving on and on and on with new projects without focusing.
Why spend on new servers, domains, scripts etc, when you already have everything you need ? Just OPTIMIZE it. Then start new stuff

Old domains are a gold mine

I'm saying that "squeezing every penny" from surfers is the same as burning every seed after a harvest. Let's see how next year's crop looks.

I didn't say anything specific about anyone's sites or business practices, Gideon. Go back to stealing domains and stalking models now, business people are talking here.

Look at the causes of "The Great Dust Bowl" in America of the 1930's.

"Poor agricultural practices and years of sustained drought caused the Dust Bowl. Plains grasslands had been deeply plowed and planted to wheat. During the years when there was adequate rainfall, the land produced bountiful crops. But as the droughts of the early 1930s deepened, the farmers kept plowing and planting and nothing would grow. The ground cover that held the soil in place was gone."

I didn't say anything specific about anyone's sites or business practices, Gideon. Go back to stealing domains and stalking models now, business people are talking here.
I understand that. I believe a lot of the advice I gave did not include squeezing every penny out of the surfer and was more a case of squeezing every penny out of your assets.

We are in an industry that has no shortage of people that will burn the entire industry to make a little bit of money for one month. What percentage of people have actually worked their asses off to build up something of value like you and I? If you look at the credit card cross sale fraud that took place in the past year. These guys were banging cards and making a killing. By doing that they were able to pay top dollar to affiliates who were unaware of what was happening and as a result taking chunks of business from guys like you and I.

The reality is Lightspeed competes with Karups competes with ATK competes with Reality Kings competes with Brazzers competes with Twistys competes with Naughty America. In the grand scheme of things we are all competing for the same traffic. Twistys and Karups are very different but if I pay $150 a signup I can go out and grab a lot of Karups' traffic sources. So if you base this comment on us all competing then I believe it is important that companies like us are monetizing our sites properly and maxizing what we make. That way we can afford to pass it on to our affiliates and be competitive (whether it be through payouts, promotions, etc).

A good example is brazzers. They've built a very strong brand. They shoot and spend more on content than anyone I know. From everything I've seen they have a very well run paysite business. They don't leave much money on the table. As a result they have huge payouts, huge promotions and dominate most traffic sources. They wouldn't be able to have those payouts if they were leaving money on the table. And I don't think they are hurting the industry in the way they are running their PAYSITE business. I don't think they are ruining next year's crop. Those bastards that were carding clients they ruined this year, next year and the next ten years crop. That I agree with. But I don't think being smart and monetizing your sites will hurt future crops.

One other comment ;) In terms of the things I've mentioned I'd love to hear which items you believe someone should not do. You've been around a long time and myself and many others value your thoughts and opinions.

As an industry we've been doing exactly what you've mentioned since day 1. The list goes on and on. I've always felt it's a shame people come in and abuse our industry. It's easy enough to make money there was never a need to cross the line and start stealing it.

but that not what he is talking about in this thread at all
every piece of advice is about maximizing profits without destroying the customer base

you really going to make that bullshit again.
product placement
doing watermarks correct
setting up a private tracker
using branding bugs
doing live interaction correctly
are all examples of the same thing, more so because they target the new traffic source properly exploiting tube traffic to actually get sales.

you don't have to listen to me, but shap has some very good ideas in this thread.

Hey Shap, Maybe you should pay us a visit in Montreal on August 28-30 2009 for QWEBEC Expo.

Then Magog is just an hour or so from Montreal
