Why did we move away from DRM?

I don't ask that rhetorically. I really wanna know. The last thing I remember, the reasoning was "surfers won't like it." And that never held much water with me. So I figure there had to be a more valid reason.

I would hazard some guesses....

It cost you money to license the DRM technology
It was easily broken (have done it myself) - therefore useless
Lots of website subscribers DO want to download and keep 'what they paid for'

ergo: a waste of the content providers money

costs more than losing content to freeloaders? and i thought DRM allowed people to download and keep files with the proper settings?

as for breaking, well yeah i can understand that. i figure that would have gotten better with time though

I only tried it with WMP as realplayer is a real big pain to get setup for DRM and VERY costly and complicated

And yes there is a way to hack DRM and a way to hack a flah player but you still lock your doors at night even thou there is a way for someone to pick your lock?

If not for support issues id use it it just not worth getting members mad

exactly why i thought DRM would have taken off. back when i was (making an attempt at) running paysites I was trying to get all my clients to back DRM. i figured every safeguard you could put in place was worth it.

but if the support issues were truly bad i probably would have dropped it too

if it can be broken - you still lost to the freeloaders ( ie. pirates, theives, and torrents) but you also paid for the technology/licensing and the overhead/implementation - so yes, you lost more

ummm. I don't know about this statement - not much point in the whole DRM concept if you can just turn it off.

I had high hopes but... what can you do

I'd like to hear from some people who use a current encrypted/streaming delivery method
for details and costs - because its something I'd like to implement myself

even Apple stopped doing DRM. In short, it was a nightmare.

I would rather have some guy's hard drive filled with all of my videos that he can always watch than have him pissed at me with a full hard drive that he can't view because his license expired.

Because it doesn't work. Ask the music industry.

Fact is DRM has almost nearly killed the music industry. DRM turned non-pirates into pirates. Now that the records labels have abandoned DRM, but for many it's too late. They are used to getting thier music for free. Stealing music isn't wrong to them now. Had the music industry been willing to sell DRM-free music from the start they wouldn't have lost a whole generation of customers. Only time will tell if they can recover. Clearly though they lost BILLIONS because of DRM.

Now the TV and movie isndustry needs to figure this out. They will eventually, but it may be to late by the time they do.

We are still using DRM on 2 of our ladyboy solo sites, but I'm serious considering remove it by the end of the year and concentrate on removing pirated content instead. Many customers unhappy with DRM, having tech problems, MAC is not supported, it cost money for the licenses and more....

Or the MPAA/Sony, if I remember correctly they spent some "insane" amount of cash on encrypting blu-ray yet you can still crack it. Having your content taken isn't the same as someone breaking in your house either. All it takes is one person to spread a video all over the net.

ok so it seems like more important than surfer dislike was just straight up technical flaw, which makes sense

LB-69 : AFter all this time it STILL sucks?? ugh.... whats the usual technical issue with it? (just curious)

GatorB : DRM didn't kill the music industry...it was just the final nail in an already elaborate coffin. but that's another topic lol

The main issues are: corrupted files after its been encoded DRM, customers computers cant connect to DRM authentication server, customer computers cant render the DRM files and more of that kind.
