Err, correct me if I'm wrong, but you just contradicted yourself.
When you say America, do you mean North America, South America, the United Staes of America? In fact, there was NO real context. Look at the topic "You judge America" - where's the context in that? If you had said, America is looks like it's going to war with Iraq, then we'd instantly realise you meant the USA since they're the only America related "thing" that relates to the context. But your context there contained no obvious clues as to which America you were referring to. Of course, we all realised what you meant seeing as the USA is so often referred to as America. But the fact is, the USA is NOT America, and nothing in the context could have referred to it as such. This argument won't end. |

---------------------- Well, yes, it actually does work that way. New words appear all the time in language and often the new meanings conflict with old ones. If usage of a word becomes popular enough, it begins to appear in dictionaries and becomes accepted as common usage. People here have been calling themselves "Americans" for a very long time and have also refered to our country as "America" for a very long time. It's even in our dictionaries. We don't however refer to our country as "The States" and we wish you would stop it.

The fact that the definition of America in dictionaries includes the United States of America is because so many people call the USA America. Dictionaries will obviously put that in so that people will understand what people mean by America in conversation.
It doesn't changes my point. Hell, if the whole world started calling a chair a poopoobumbumthingy for years, it'd be put into a dictionary as well. English has been warped over the years to accommodate the stupidity of people speaking it incorrectly. America does not mean the USA, period. Everyone will keep using America in place of the USA (including me) but the fact still remains that it is not. |

So how can we then define anything in a language as being correct or incorrect? Why do we take English classes if our English language is evolving the same way fashion or music is? Somewhere along the lines we HAVE to govern what is, and what is not correct.
The general rules of logic can be used to realise that America does not mean the USA - why not South America? Why not North America? Why not Latin America? |

Well, it is a bit of a problem. Tried reading Shakespeare lately? The language changed quite a bit in the last 400 years and it hasn't stopped. No one has to govern anything. Language needs to be free to change to best describe the environment of it's speakers. After all, English is just German with 1500 years of social evolution.

Ask a group of English professors whether "ain't" is correct english or not. Some will say yes. Some will say no. Some will say it has advanced to above the level of slang now.
