Ok so here in Australia, if everyone does it, we can call ourselves America? Or maybe we can call ourselves Germany? Or Mars. And because everyone in the country calls it that, it becomes true no matter what it conflicts with.

Well, yes, it actually does work that way. New words appear all the time in language and often the new meanings conflict with old ones. If usage of a word becomes popular enough, it begins to appear in dictionaries and becomes accepted as common usage.

People here have been calling themselves "Americans" for a very long time and have also refered to our country as "America" for a very long time. It's even in our dictionaries. We don't however refer to our country as "The States" and we wish you would stop it.
