Do You Sleep With a Fan On?
I worked third shift for 13 years and developed a habit of sleeping during the day with a fan blowing in the room to provide some background noise. I then wisely passed that on to my girlfriend and now, after 14 years together, neither one of us can sleep unless there's a fan going in the room. Are we weird? Does anyone here have the same habit?

				 | Hell, yeah. Can't even think about sleeping without one. My college boyfriend got me hooked. He was in vet school and his whole family were vets, so he had those big ass fans that they dry dogs in front of. He would actually point it right at the bed, which I didn't like. I slept with the covers over my head. I don't point the fan at me. It's on the other side of the room so all I get is the noise. I do run the ceiling fan above the bed, though. I've been thinking about getting one of those sound machine things that look like an alarm clock. I wonder how well they'd work?

				 | I think it was in the movie Seven that Morgan Freeman's character turned a metronome on before he went to bed at night...I guess the steady "click click click" served the same purpose. Not enough for me, though. Give me the fan.

				 | The fan might dry your throat or nose out and make them feel dry/hoarse, but a cold is a virus. You don't get it from wind or temperature.

				 | Partly. I also like it on because it moves the air around in the room, which is a good thing. But lately I've had an air purifier going, which makes a similar sound and also moves the air around... but it also filters out dust particles. The fan still gets some use in the summer.

				 | I like having some sort of air circulation when I sleep.....I mostly sleep with a fan on even if it's a heater fan....But when I lived near the ocean and had the natural breeze coming in my window, I no longer needed it.

				 | I've experimented with tuning my clock radio to an unused part of the FM dial with some success. White noise. I'm a light sleeper so having something that partially masks background noises (such as my 2 year old getting up for the day) helps. |

				 | So many anxiety cases here, is that a requirement of becoming an adult webmaster? you know, together with the working from home thing, you get the (mental) picture Just put the fan noise on a CD and play it on the stereo, no more cold wind. |

				 | My lady is the same exact way. We have a floor standing fan for the winter and a fan that fits in the window for the warmer months and neither of us can sleep without it. I am used to sleeping with the TV on - always have been and it helps me fall asleep but since we moved in together, she's totally against having a TV in the bedroom since i like to leave it on all night and not set the sleep timer. Not to mention she doesn't want a huge TV brightening up the room while she's trying to sleep. Funny someone would bring this up though.

				 | OMG, I thought I was the only person who did this! I hate going to hotels, friend's and family's homes (though I do have "my" room at my brother's with a ceiling fan), even the hospital because I don't have my fan It's not the noise, it's the wind. I have to have it facing me either from the ceiling fan or from a floor fan. And don't try any of that oscillating crap - I want it on me the whole time!! And yes, even when it's 0 degrees outside If I'm somewhere I can open a window I'm OK but if I'm in a hotel room where I can't open a window then I have that AC blowing full blast all night long. |
