Do You Sleep With a Fan On?

I worked third shift for 13 years and developed a habit of sleeping during the day with a fan blowing in the room to provide some background noise. I then wisely passed that on to my girlfriend and now, after 14 years together, neither one of us can sleep unless there's a fan going in the room.

Are we weird? Does anyone here have the same habit?

SexualDragon 03-27-2008 06:36 AM

Raises hand

viencarl 03-27-2008 06:41 AM

yeah i experienced the same thing too

i want the wind blow in my feet :):):)

Zuzana Designs 03-27-2008 06:42 AM

I sure do :) If it is on a lower setting it drives me nuts

Fap 03-27-2008 06:51 AM

its not weird i sometimes leave the fan on but i always wake up freezing early in the morning

bobby666 03-27-2008 06:52 AM

only if i want to get sick

Darkhorse 03-27-2008 06:53 AM

Ya I am the same mate, it's either on or I don't sleep. Been hard lately though we have a new born in the room with us so unless it's stinkn hot I don't have it on.....

cthulhu_waves 03-27-2008 06:53 AM

i experience it too, raise the roof

LauraLee 03-27-2008 07:06 AM

White noise, gotta have it.

Holly 03-27-2008 07:06 AM

Hell, yeah. Can't even think about sleeping without one. My college boyfriend got me hooked. He was in vet school and his whole family were vets, so he had those big ass fans that they dry dogs in front of. He would actually point it right at the bed, which I didn't like. I slept with the covers over my head.

I don't point the fan at me. It's on the other side of the room so all I get is the noise. I do run the ceiling fan above the bed, though.

I've been thinking about getting one of those sound machine things that look like an alarm clock. I wonder how well they'd work?

ADL Colin 03-27-2008 07:09 AM

yup. sure do

TimCase 03-27-2008 07:13 AM

I think it was in the movie Seven that Morgan Freeman's character turned a metronome on before he went to bed at night...I guess the steady "click click click" served the same purpose.

Not enough for me, though. Give me the fan.

EuroRev_Stacey 03-27-2008 07:16 AM

When I let the fan ON pointing to me the whole night, expect the next morning that I have colds :)

The fan might dry your throat or nose out and make them feel dry/hoarse, but a cold is a virus. You don't get it from wind or temperature.

Scott McD 03-27-2008 07:32 AM

People leave a fan on just for the noise ?!?!?

AssPirate 03-27-2008 07:36 AM

i do too...especially when the weather is too hot...

lhizy_05 03-27-2008 07:48 AM

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh yes i do, when it's hot!!:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

'So Fucking Money 03-27-2008 08:28 AM

Yeah, even in the winter. Im here in PHX right now and it's waaay too quiet. Luckily Ive got street sounds outside the window.

SeptemberLee 03-27-2008 08:30 AM

Me...I ALWAYS sleep with the fan on..even if it's cold I need that wind blowing on my face..lol:thumbsup

Sid70 03-27-2008 09:05 AM

My wife's laptop is Asus and it's noise is what I love hearing falling asleep...

Partly. I also like it on because it moves the air around in the room, which is a good thing.

But lately I've had an air purifier going, which makes a similar sound and also moves the air around... but it also filters out dust particles.

The fan still gets some use in the summer.

Yes, I'm a freak...

wyldblyss 03-27-2008 09:26 AM

Hubby has to have the fan, I could do without it. Sometimes it is nice, but sometimes it is downright irritating.

Honez 03-27-2008 09:30 AM

I have been sleeping with a fan on me for the past 33 years. I even have a little one I travel with. I can't sleep without the noise.

carol.prime 03-27-2008 09:43 AM

of course, can't sleep without it. ;)

Dirty Lord 03-27-2008 09:47 AM

I get sick every time I do this....

Jayvis 03-27-2008 10:52 AM

I can only sleep with a fan on. Not blowing directly on me though, can't stand that, but just for the noise. :)

WhiplashDug 03-27-2008 10:53 AM

yes. its a must.

BVF 03-27-2008 10:58 AM

I like having some sort of air circulation when I sleep.....I mostly sleep with a fan on even if it's a heater fan....But when I lived near the ocean and had the natural breeze coming in my window, I no longer needed it.

u-Bob 03-27-2008 10:59 AM

only if i want to wake up with neck pain... :/

FelixFlow 03-27-2008 11:02 AM

yes i do! in the wintertime, i just turn it to the side & aim it at a wall, lol

that "buzzzzzzzzzzzz" noise puts me to sleep :)

VeriSexy 03-27-2008 06:24 PM

No, but it doesn't get hot here

Swish 03-27-2008 06:46 PM

I do, just for the background noise like you said :thumbsup

tony286 03-27-2008 06:49 PM

Worked night shift here for a long long time and I too cant sleep without the fan on all year round.

GrouchyAdmin 03-27-2008 06:50 PM

I haven't slept with a fan on for years.

shekinah 03-27-2008 06:56 PM

Nope, it's cold here... don't need a fan while sleeping.

rowan 03-27-2008 07:12 PM

I've experimented with tuning my clock radio to an unused part of the FM dial with some success. White noise. I'm a light sleeper so having something that partially masks background noises (such as my 2 year old getting up for the day) helps.

Rinaldo 03-27-2008 07:14 PM

I need one or I can't sleep. I can't sleep at other people's houses for this reason.

MissMina 03-27-2008 07:15 PM

Yep. Me. Can't sleep without one.

The Judge 03-27-2008 07:24 PM

So many anxiety cases here, is that a requirement of becoming an adult webmaster? you know, together with the working from home thing, you get the (mental) picture

Just put the fan noise on a CD and play it on the stereo, no more cold wind.

Lace 03-27-2008 07:28 PM

My lady is the same exact way. We have a floor standing fan for the winter and a fan that fits in the window for the warmer months and neither of us can sleep without it.

I am used to sleeping with the TV on - always have been and it helps me fall asleep but since we moved in together, she's totally against having a TV in the bedroom since i like to leave it on all night and not set the sleep timer. :1orglaugh Not to mention she doesn't want a huge TV brightening up the room while she's trying to sleep.

Funny someone would bring this up though.

L-Pink 03-27-2008 07:32 PM

I can't sleep unless there is fan noise in the room. When traveling I turn on the bathroom fan ... Interesting to see how many react the same.

papill0n 03-27-2008 07:37 PM

an esential part of a good nights sleep :thumbsup

ungratefulninja 03-27-2008 07:39 PM

I prefer the noise and the wind blowing on me.

bu((aneer 03-27-2008 07:47 PM

I was sleeping one time and the ceiling fan came off!!!

Luckily it didnt hit me, but it scared me shitless! What a way to wake up!

1-800-313-WETT 03-27-2008 07:55 PM

I just turned mine on - just to fit in

Peaches 03-27-2008 07:55 PM

OMG, I thought I was the only person who did this! I hate going to hotels, friend's and family's homes (though I do have "my" room at my brother's with a ceiling fan), even the hospital because I don't have my fan :(

It's not the noise, it's the wind. I have to have it facing me either from the ceiling fan or from a floor fan. And don't try any of that oscillating crap - I want it on me the whole time!! And yes, even when it's 0 degrees outside :)

If I'm somewhere I can open a window I'm OK but if I'm in a hotel room where I can't open a window then I have that AC blowing full blast all night long.

dennisthemenace 03-27-2008 08:08 PM

You bet - air purifier... sound, moving cleaner air, great sleep.

payd2purv 03-27-2008 08:26 PM

I am the same way about having noise.

I don't have a fan but I can't fall asleep without the TV on...

J. Falcon 03-27-2008 08:30 PM

Thats a great wat to catch a cold.
