during college I did this. Same deal it drowned out sound. Originally was using it in the dorm rooms to keep cool... But then even in winter it helped keep noise down. Now most the time I have the TV on until I pass out. Or put the sleep timer on.

I've got pretty bad tinnitus so I slept with a fan really close to my head for a lot of years to distract me from the high pitched ringing when it first developed. I've got a bit more used to it now though and don't really need it altough I prefer at least a ceiling fan on anyway to move the air around a bit.

Never needed actually.
But I can't stand the noise, so I'd just put it to freshen the room and then switch it off.
I don't like ceiling fans over the bed. They seem they may fall anytime.
