Go to a range, rent their guns, find out if you like a revolver or semi-auto better.

Like others say though, go rent a few guns and try them out to see what you want and what you are most comfortable with. |

Why would you even need a gun?

You are an asshat...
I'm not going to bother with you.... I carry a M&P compact .40cal in the summer and a beretta 92FS in the winter. I also have a few assault rifles. I have always wanted a large revolver - it will just be a range gun, not for carry. |

For home protection, I had a former special forces captain tell me. A pump shotgun is best for several reasons, its just point and spray in the direct of what you want to hit. He said you would be surprised how close you can be with a hand gun and miss. Also the sound of the round going into the chamber is a deterrent.

A 357 on a 44 frame is a great combo.
It's a bit heavier than a standard 357 but the benefit is it has the kick of a 22 with the extra body weight so extended shooting time isn't stressful on the wrists at all and the reduced "barrel bounce" seems to help on a more control shooting pattern (and get a good set of sound reducing ear plugs). |

That Ruger is tight, it's been heavily customized though. Like the hammer ground off and polished so it's double action only. Nice if you want to shoot it while it's still inside your jacket pocket while concealing it walking down a rough alley or something like that. Always on the ready.
Ruger makes a nice gun. I have a few of theirs myself. |

A shotgun, rifle, or even a long barrelled pistol are not as good as a short barrelled hammer less revolver as pictured above. Even if your attacker grabbed the barrel his hand would still be covering the end. If it had a longer barrel he could grab it and direct it away from his harms way. Same with a shotgun or rifle. Especially since most altercations happen within very close quarters. |
