They are good if you never plan on getting to close to your assailant. Like answering the door, etc etc...

A shotgun, rifle, or even a long barrelled pistol are not as good as a short barrelled hammer less revolver as pictured above.

Even if your attacker grabbed the barrel his hand would still be covering the end. If it had a longer barrel he could grab it and direct it away from his harms way. Same with a shotgun or rifle.

Especially since most altercations happen within very close quarters.
