I have a snub nose S&W 357. It can shoot .38 rounds and .357 rounds so you can buy cheap ammo to practice with. The best part about it is the sound and fire it makes. When you shoot 357 ammo in it you get a 2-3 foot long flame that shoots out the barrel and it sounds like the hammer of god when it goes off. If someone is attacking you and you shoot at them with this gun, even if you miss the fire and sound will encourage them to go the other way.
Like others say though, go rent a few guns and try them out to see what you want and what you are most comfortable with.
