Be financially independent, as in you can take your business with you everywhere you go, or as in be retired in terms of wealth.

Never assume you can just move and you'll find a new job without problems if you have to rely on an employer.

Get some knowledge about where you move, but don't try to have it all totally planned out, as things always go a little different than you thought somehow anyways.

Be flexible!

Take at least 2 weeks off to go to your new location, get your papers done, get your apartment / house, get familiar with shopping places, etc. - when this is all set -and only then- go back home, pack whatever you feel like taking with you, close shop / last home etc. and get out to your new location where your new home is already waiting for you to move in.

Get used to not be stressed so much anymore yeah, some places just have a different pace and depending where you came from you need to get used to this.

Might post more, when more comes to mind...

I'm looking for a nice caribbean island that works as a tax shelter that I can move to and still be able to run business as usual. My woman is a nurse so I'd like to keep her working for rent money and keep going with my online stuff. I have 2 kids with other women but could still just have them come down for summers.

I've packed up and moved before a couple of times. Depending on the distance its easiest just to sell EVERYTHING and then takeoff.

If you plan on either continuing to work or selling you may want to try to get citizenship in a place with low taxation so you don't have to give the current regime a bunch of $$$! Which may mean selling some of your smaller things off, setting up camp in the new location and awaiting citizenship BEFORE selling the big things off.

I apologize. That was a rude comment. I have no idea what your circumstances are, though I do believe life and reality is what you make of it.

Has anyone done it here on GFY?
Did exactly that.

One thing not to do is a mind-messing based on dreams and emotion - met so many people from other countries who seem to be guided more on emotion than much else and dreaming of palm trees, deserted beaches and furry critters Sure they are all there, but taken for granted after a while.

Yep... tended to stick around the Caribbean and Latin America area and no need (least if you are a webmaster) to give up much in respect of earning capacity - in many ways these countries offer much more re online activity. Also extended into real estate in this area and that has been just awesome, but the best days (least for the moment) in that market may have probably passed and it's much less likely being able to pick up hectacres of land for peanuts - these are now selling for crazy prices.

Despite that - the Carib islands and Latin America is still a nice area and offers a much higher lifestyle (and side benefits like little or no taxation), but really depends on personal wishes/preferences.

Exactly DWB!

First thing I used to appreciate more was the lack of form-filling, bs and no taxation - but, in the longer term, it's more about quality of life.

That was a nice move

And yeah, true... you never know what keeps someone from making that dream their reality - might just be something out of their power, or a permanent medical condition etc.

Nice to see that you've put some thought into it, not everyone is that fortunate to be flexible enough to roam the planet as they wish, for whatever reason.

Here is a quick list of ZERO personal income tax places with (National average income) Also ALL of these have English as their national language.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda ($76k)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bahamas ($18k)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Kitts_and_Nevis ($14k)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anguilla ($9k)

Not sure on $$$
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Virgin_Islands
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayman_Islands

I couldn't find british Virgin Islands or the Cayman average income numbers but obviously the more money everybody makes the higher the cost of living is. I would assume the Cayman's are an expensive place to live and BVI's being reasonable.

So take this list and do some research. Basically every place on this list with a decent sized city will have good internet access and therefore be PARADISE since you can have broadband and live in a place where average temps are 80-90F YEAR round! the western islands tend to get stronger hurricanes while the ones to the east the canes are weaker usually since they have less time to form. Someplace like the bahama's aren't too far from the US so you can get back in relatively quick if you want to go visit family.

Most of the islands are English-speaking farkedup - and no relevant personal taxation (or corp taxation, tho with minor variances). Most of Latin America also has no applicable taxation on "foreign earnings" - ie webmaster revenue.

Traditional places like Bermuda and Caymen are all kinda overpriced "condo world" - they used to have plenty to offer, but have become more "cultivated". Sadly that "condo world" is also coming to Costa Rica and Panama and starting to screw these countries up, but a few of the other islands are still OK - they just don't have enough land for sale and that keeps "civilization" subdued.

My list was put together thinking that national average income would be a rough representation of cost of living so obviously Bermuda will be insanely expensive since there's tons of cash there. I think Cayman is catching up to bermuda quickly and probably british virgin islands being a nice mix with the bahamas and st kitts. I'm trying to stick with eastern islands and honestly the closer to the US the better.

Got ya

Sure, it's inevitable when land/infrastructure rises, the cost of living always seems to have a knack of following on And sure - agree Bermuda is a joke re what you get for your money.

To be honest, seen a lot of real estate in Bermuda and Caymen over the years and it really is absurdly overpriced. Got no doubts you can get double size on property elsewhere at half the price - at least *lol* Another aspect of this is - if you go in at that level, it's unlikely to deliver up a reasonable capital appreciation over a reasonable short term period (but sure going to be a safe investment).

About six or years ago was about to buy a place in BVI and was priced around $450K then. Recently noticed that same property was on the market again at.. think around $2.2 mill and sure would have been a good investment at $450K. But - at the same time there are, or were, other areas where the return was much higher - and dumped some money into them and they generally have shown an 18-19 fold increase in the same timespan.

Apart from knowing there is infractucture, it's prob a matter of looking eg five years ahead and gambling on what the potential may be at that time. More people are generally "on the move" and this is thrusting up real estate values. At the same time, there are still areas which are "pure paradise" (awesome places) and got little doubts these are next on the hit list - tho may not be good overall for the areas concerned since they will probably end up as more condo worlds.

I'm thinking st kitts or BVI might be the next in line to blow up. I'm sure there are MANY people doing exactly what we're doing here and looking at the tax savings and then going down the list of options to ones that are reasonable priced now + have decent infrastructure in place.

I really need to find some hard facts on the BVI income + "normal" housing. I'm not looking for a mansion on the beach. I'd settle for an average place with like 2 or 3 bedrooms where I can get broadband. Hell I grew up trailer trash and own 2k sq ft house and trying my best to stay living modestly through the next big wave of income I have. As long as I do that I feel like I could practically retire at a young age. Buy something like a house that whatever $150k can get me and living there like 10 years. If it goes up around $1M just refinance it and remodel + pocket some. If you get lucky you could practically just live off of refinancing your house for quite a while. My fiance is a nurse so I'd REALLY like to find something thats cheap enough that whatever she can make can pay our annual bills so that what I make can go towards retirement. When you think of something like average income being $14k you can instantly tack on what like 25% for the fact of no income tax (for the average person here its what like 25-30%?) But for somebody making $100k+/yr online it is HUGE to dodge income tax.

2006 I got hit with making $200k (not counting what I didn't claim) and I will NEVER give the US government that kind of money again! I absolutely refuse. This country doesn't put it to any reasonable usage and mismanages it so badly that I'm leaving the country before I ever give up that kind of money again.
