Ever thought about selling all your shit and move?
So we had this discussion today, after we saw the movie "the heartbreak kid" with ben stiller. Good movie.
In the end, he sells his company in the states and moves to mexico and starts a new company there. A company where you can rent diving stuff from. So we had this discussion, that a lot of people wish that they did what he did. Moving to some tropical place, where the weather is good most of the time (not so rainy or stormy etc). How many of you wished that you had done something like that? How many of you have had dreams about doing it? Im sure that most of you older ppl have thought about it, but havent been able to because of family (kids and so on). Has anyone done it here on GFY? |
Hopefully doing it beginning of next year :) I just need to go back to the UK and clear up a few bits and bobs, and hopefully I'll be out of there by March. No plans as to where to move yet though...

you need guts to do that

I think about it an average of three times a day.
Perhaps in a few years when my life is mine I will do so. A warm place is a very seductive notion. |
Only reason I haven't is because of my children, but yes, I'd love to get the fuck out of here & move to Finland, Russia or Praque.. somewhere in that area

I did it for a year. I decided not to sell everything as I knew I wanted to come back in time, and just headed out, unsure of how long I would stay. I went down to mexico and started living in a hut in the jungle. It was a small village that had electricity and phones, so I was able to work over dialup still. It was fantastic. I could work from my hammock if the mood struck.
I don't know why more people don't do it. They think there are things stopping them, but really there isn't. |
been 1yr now....

Yes I actually did exactly that, twice.
|
Not exactly sell it, just be away from it 5 or 6 months every year. I like that better :)
|
thought about it.

Doing porn is ok, but just like anything else it gets old and boring. I like to design and build things, so at some point I want to design a small 2 seater sports car and then maybe a small one seat home built airplane. In fact I'd love to get into reproduction WW2 aircraft. Another thing I'd like to do is build online video games that are sold via subscriptions. |

I had one of my good buddies do that about 5 years ago now, quit his job, sold/gave/threw away all of his belongings and moved to Australia. It took about 2 years to go through the process of becoming a citizen or to get landed immigrant status that would enable him to work full time and not have to leave the country every six months for 48 hours.
During that time he was on a student visa took some courses and worked part time. Once he got the OK that he was able to stay permanently he finished his schooling and bought a house. Now he is a personal trainer making really good money, he owns 2 houses and golfs or surfs daily. He really loves it there. I had planned on going with him or shortly there after. Maybe not permanently but for at least a year. Unfortunately some things had come up that prevented me from going, although I would still really like to go there in the near future. |
I did about 2 and a half years ago, and it worked out wonderfully :)

No high speed though i thought? |
My experience is that for most people the move takes a fucking hooked ass turn and runined the life they could have had. So proceed with caution!
There is a reason why the majority of people who have these ideas don't follow thru...it's because they fear the worst and the worst is what a lot of people actually get from what I've seen. |

Sorta did it 11 years ago.
Of course, at 22, I didn't have much to my name at the time - but I sold what I had, and drove across the country to start life anew. Been a fun ride ever since. |
Did that ~ 7 months ago...
Didn't actually sell anything, just moved my / our asses into the sun! Not a minute of regret yet :2 cents: |
isn't the purpose of being a webmaster so that you can skip the 'sell my stuff' part.
just build your online biz and make the move ?? |
Spicoli, some ppl get tired of their current work and sell what they have to pursue a new career!
|
Or just diversify

Years ago I moved from Cali to NC and just took what I could put in my car ... Love it here but I still do think about it sometimes

Not a bad service. But a 3 month wait because of backorders. |
I'm going to. Hopefully in Spring '08.
|
I am still waiting for a contrat in Curracao. I will leave without thinking about it.
|
All of you people who have made the move, if there are any tips, any advice or so forth, it would be much appreciated.
I've travelled a lot round the world, and speak 2 aqnd a half languages but have lived in one country for most of my life... |
i'd love too. but i can't. i need to think about my family first. i wanna move to some place where i can relax and feel no worries. but i know that's really impossible. :( hopefully, if i already give them a better life.
|
I'm building out the infrastructure now, being able to stash an Asterisk box offshore and having downtown Chicago numbers ring in say... Dubai makes it all a reality. :) :thumbsup
|
I have many times, then reality came in :(
