Ive seen it all as well. I was working in fine dining Italian place and kitchen staff was far from being fine dining. Those mother fucking Mexicans would pick off the plates, drop shit on the floor and put it right back on the plate and pour some extra souse just to cover dirt. Waiters are even worst…

Well at mortons we had two at the same time besides the back waiters and we were four people.I thought it seemed like alot.

I agree completely!! Also, what a lot of people don't know, is the reason why their steak dinner costs $17 as opposed to $30 is because of the fact that the servers are being paid below minimum wage.

I stayed serving tables for 5 years because it was the only place in my area that was flexible with my school schedule and paid enough to keep a roof over my head.

Totally got spoiled that summer and DECIDED I PREFERRED TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BILL.

You screwed yourself. People with money want to keep it.

If your policy is to automatically charge 20% then just do it.

Ron Weiner this "hot shot" lawyer from Atlanta comes into chops tonight to entertain 7 of his friends.

Right off the bat he orders 3 bottles of Cabernet valued at $150 a piece and shellfish appetizer for 8 people roughly $600 and a bottle of tattinger $80.

Very polite, educated, well spoken and youthful were the guests he was entertaining. He also made it a point that he was the person to get the bill at the end of the night.

Having provided PERFECT service, including wine recomondation, wine service, beautifuly decorated and garnished shelfish towers wich included colosal stone crab claws, oysters, lobster and shrimp, i also showcased table side skills wich involved Fileting and de-boning 2 dover sole's as well as carving 44oz double porterhouse's tableside, i was SURE TO HAVE THIS ONE!!!!!

My assistants and i did not miss a beat, even providing our guests with hot towels and lemon to clean their filthy hands after enjoying the expensive appatizer.

A perfect 2 course meal, Shellfish tower and Entre's leaves no room in the bellys of my guests, and push's them to settle for the check after i offer them desert, after dinner drinks and beverages...

The check was roughly $1700
and included 20% gratutity was automaticly placed on the check for the party size of 8 people, brining the final bill to $2040 for 8 people.
VERY GOOD for a restaurant with a $100/ a head check average.

it is then that I CHOSEEEEEEEEE to waive the automatic 20% gratuity thinking that this HOT SHOT would tip us 20% easily and possibly more.

In this case i could have simply taken my 20% and said GOODNIGHT.

Instead i give him the choice, by judgin his charactar i thought he would be a DECENT 20 percent tipper by the way he was spening..

boy was i wrong...

after using his "club card" he knocked off a savings of 10% from the check, brining the check down to $1600

he then proceded to tip me a MEASLY 12% on 1600 !!!!! the
DISCOUNTED PRICE!!!

He Shorted me $140 by 20% terms!!

Here comes the worst part.....

12% of $1600 is a $200 Tip....

This tip gets SPLIT 50/50 with a back waiter

THEN i tip a bus boy out 2.75% of my sales. IN this case
$1700 x .0275= -$47.00.

THEN another .05% for a bartender -$8.5

then another .05% for a food runner -$8.5

Then -$5 for a stocker.

Wich Leaves me with $31 dollars wich then goes into a checking system and is taxed just like any paycheck anyone else would recieve.

ID LIKE TO SAY A BIG FUCK YOU TO RON WEINER WHO DINED AT CHOPS TUESDAY NIGHT. You are the one that gave him the option to lower the tip.... ALso jusat because he paid WAY to much for some booze which inflated the bill you think you were entitled to make more money? if those few bottles were diet coke you still would have done the same work and his bill would have been hundreds less. I think you should be thankfull you got anything and not stiffed.:2 cents:

its not what waiters and waitresses gets paid that influences my decision. the hourly wage is lower because the hourly wage isn't their sole source of income on the job and has almost ZERO to do with their actual earnings. what they earn depends on them, their skill and whether or not they are professional and do a great job.

Trump vs Rosie??? come again?

you may not feel the need to tip people that make $2.15 an hour but I do. Even if the service is average at best. In Canada if the same service is provided I definitely tip less than i would in the exact same situation in the states.

And my point is its the restaurant owners that win down south, low overhead and custom that depends on peoples humanity to make sure their employees get paid. They sure don't lower their food prices to take into account your paying their employees wages I'll guarantee you that.

Anyway I am done with you. Think its time you joined GatorB on my ignorant ignore list.

While tipping is still an option that is based on service it is still a common courtesy imho to tip atleast 15% if you received good service.

My avg tip starts at 20% as i was in the biz along time and i know how hard the work is. Now with that being said you can work your way down in the tip very easily and i have been known to tip 25 even 30% for exceptional service

You got it. in the states my tip starts at 15% and has the ability to go up and down but usually not below 10% cause I am aware of their wage and do feel bad. But I will always tell them why they got a lower tip from me.

In Canada I start and 10% and work my way up and down. Most times its more. I would say its rare to get deducted and I would say I have not tipped someone only about 5 times and that took some serious shit service to get that.

But I agree that not all Canadians understand that the US wait staff gets paid brutal salaries and think they get similar wages that they get up here. Big difference between $2.50 an hour and $8 an hour. 10% on my $30 bill now has them at $11 an hour in Canada if they only had my table which is usually not the case. Thats still only $5.50 an hour stateside.

Not sure either system is better for service mind you. Stateside its considered a god given right to get tipped no matter what so service can be pretty uninspiring as a result and up here they get a decent base and know they will still get 10% so they don't go full out either. At least I don't feel guilty for tipping less in Canada if thats the case.

After Shock Media 11-14-2007 09:32 PM

Wait what the fuck is the bullshit with if you can not tip at least 10 to 15 percent you shouldn't go out to eat? What about do an outstanding job and make my night out fantastic and I will gladly pony over a good tip but fuck my night up and you will be lucky that I not only write a big ass zero on the tip lines but also complain to the manager on the way out.

I do not care if you early a low hourly rate, yet around here they do get minimum wage plus tips so that argument not valid with me. I tip and I tip often, hell I tip many people who most never do tip just out of custom of what my grandparents taught me (mailman anyone?). However I was raised and still believe that tipping is 100% optional and based on exceptional service.

Hell as a kid when I delivered papers not only was it required that they be rolled, bagged, banged, and on a porch or in a paper holder by no later than 6am. I had to also pay for every newspaper myself, every rubber band, every plastic bag, my delivery bag, my receipt book, you name it. Then it was my duty to go collect from customers. Tips were very damn important to me and I imagine just as important to any waiter. Though I made sure to find out the customers desires and then meet or exceed them. No knocking papers off the door, placing them in the V of the porch support so the dog wouldn't grab it which also meant getting off my bike to do it, you name it. I however was rewarded for it. All the while also knowing that just two complaints in a month would mean me loosing my damn route. So yes I can understand the service industry.

I just have a peeve when people act or assume they are entitled or that I am less of a person if I tip someone according to the service provided.

Oh something else. Those laughing at the Quizno's tip jar, why? They not only are serving you, they are actually personally assembling your meal as per your request. Why is this different than some chain place you sit down at and Jane smith brings you your choose 3 from Apple bee's. Hell I actually think in that instant quizno's person should trump Apple bee's lady.
