I have 6 kids

They got each one good spanking at one time in their live

It's an old paddle, worn, loved and hated by everybody in my family.
Hidden by most of the kids at least once.

The last time I had to use is was

when my than 16 year old son (6 years ago) stole the neighbors car and went on a joy ride. He got 20 paddles on his butt! Lightweight pants only!!. You want to see a 16 year old cry in fear before hand. That was the way to do it. None of the other kids ever done anything stupid afterwards, to deserve the paddle. I don't hit, the paddle is it!

I never needed to hit my kids in the face, punch them, kick them or anything else like that. Put the fear into them from small on than you got good kids when they grow up.

3 are now in their 20's and good to go (Pawnbroker, Legal Ass, and College)
3 are still in their pre-teens and you never know. The paddle might be used again in the future!

What that lady did to that 4 year old was not right. If the kid mis-behaved smack!!! it on the butt, its not the pain which makes kids behave is the fact that they know they did wrong. It doesn't even have to be hard. I flick my 10 year old on the arm with my fingers and say "Clean your room" and trust me she whines like a pup. OOO that hurt mom!! .

My kids watched that lady beating her 4 year old on TV and the first thing they said was "Oh my god mom thats terrible what that lady does, I hope the baby (everything is a baby to my pre-teens) is ok.

But at age 4 to 13 they are braindead anyway, talking and beatings don't get thru to them. Taking away the TV, PC or Phone. well NOW youre talking.

Just ask my 13 year old lol

I believe there's a place for limited corporal punishment. Respect is based on two things, fear and regard. Kids don't understand regard in quite the same way adults do, but it has a place in controlling the child. Failing that, and when a quicker compliance is needed, you get to corporal punishment.

Now, I've seen that tape several times, and it's disturbing in several ways. First, the woman knows what she'd doing is wrong because she looks around to see if anyone is watching (apparently a large segment of the public is still unaware of the prevalance of surveillance cameras). This indicates premeditation and a knowledge that what she's about to do is wrong.

Then, there's the ferocity of the attack, and the anger she exhibited in it. Apparently, she'd just had a bad time trying to do some returns and took out her frustration in part on the kid (who know doubt was not making things easier in the store: I've raised a kid and I know a four year old can be pretty inconvenient at times). This woman was out of control, but she was consciously out of control. She gave herself this moment to suspend the rules, is what I mean.

Finally, there's the amount of punishment she dealt out. CNN timed the attack at over 20 seconds.

Now, when I say I'm for corporal punishment, what I'm referring to is something measured and NOT done in a state of anger.

One or two good open-handed swats on a kid's bottom is the limit I would allow.

The idea of a "time out" or sending the kid to his/her room sounds great on paper, but when you're out shopping, the concept of relating the punishment to the infraction gets lost, especially with a small child, and with the loss of the relation goes the loss of the lesson.

As kids get older and understand English better, and have more highly developed reasoning powers, the use of naked force becomes less powerful and less useful. I remember from high school, taking a few swats from a teacher with a paddle like a man was actually a badge of honor. However, being grounded or being given extra chores or especially losing driving privileges made a pretty serious impression on me.

What makes you so certain I am not really a liberal? I just saw the womans attorney on TV. According to him the little girl is with the mother and she is supposed to be on her way to Chicago to turn herself in. The attornery said the little girl is perfectly ok. No bruises, no scratches, etc. I am not clear about the mother taking the little girl with her to Chicago. I rather doubt it.

I have been married several times. I don't have any children that I am aware of and am glad that I don't, considering the failed marriages. I am not looking for another relationship and I don't have any desire to have kids, just to leave behind a legacy. I probably wouldn't make a good father as little kids get on my nerves. The teenagers that I know, that friends of mine call their pride and joy, for the most part piss me off because of the way they talk to and treat their parents. In my opinion some of them need to be punched out.

Getting your ass kicked every now and then keeps you in line. Beating your kid for random shit like stealing a cookie, is a bit out of line, you just snatch the cookie, give their finger a pluck and send them to their room.

Now, hiding 2 weeks of unsatisfactory-classwork notices, and forging your parents' handwriting on these notices and giving them back to the teacher constitutes an ass whooping.

I dunno, the random beatings depending on the severity worked for me, then the parents let up for a bit. So I would be off the hook after a stern warning, but I knew if I fucked up again on the same item/issue that ass whooping was waiting in the closet.

Oh, and closed-fist punching is never allowed, unless you want your child to literally try and kill you in your sleep or poison your food. That would scar them for life...and revenge would ensue...

But what do I know, I don't have kids and I was never a kid before!

i was hit as a kid by my mom, and though my dad's yelling made me cry far worse than what my mom did to me, i never had the hatred for him as i had for my mom. she close handedly hit me once, and i had a little bruise on my face. her theory was "if they dont understand like people, they have to be treated like animals" (she actually has said that). she used a belt, threw shit, whipped me around by my hair, and all of this till i was 15. im 21 now.
i dont hate my mom now, but i havent forgiven her nor will i ever for the way she treated me, because it was completely unecessary. i never actually did really bad shit. i told her i would call the police once and tell them what she did, and she says to me "who do you think they will believe. you or me". this shit happens.
i agree with all of the people who have posted about some physical punishment is necessary if they are misbehaving. it would be nice to think that all children are perfect and respectful, but they arent. but theres punishment as teaching and there is punishment as taking your personal frustrations out on your child. and thats where i think much of it comes from.
