Okay, so DreamHost is down again. Anybody have any competitive deal? Plus, if any host has a script that will copy over all my files/sql/php stuff, that'd be even better.

I'm done with them, three times it's been down in a week. It's affecting sales and I need to do something about it. Thanks guys

there's a reason why dreamhost is as cheap as they are...you get what you pay for. don't expect any competitive offers from any solid reliable hosts.

hey dude i really hope you arent talking about a dreamhost virtual account. If yuo really want to make money get a dedicated server with any of the hosting companies that are on gfy.

or mike from webair
and its easy peasy lemon squezy to transfer over yer shit

i wouldnt go with a virtual account for any site that has over 100 uniques, heh but thats just me

There is nothing wrong with virtual accounts, depending on what you are doing. If script intensive, then maybe not best option, but if not, nothing wrong with virtuals.

Not all companies are the same.

And no, I am never going to compete for their customers. Not my target market.

Sometimes when there is am outage temporary fixes are made to restore service. Then you have to come back and do it right which causes more downtime.

Yeah, years ago I got burned on a dedicated box. I got off a virual host that was serving up 1000's of galleries with no problem. I put then on a dedicated box that was shit and my sites died.

Just because it's dedicated doesn't mean it's got enough power.

I went from paying what.. 60 a year to paying 720 a year and my sales have gone through the roof. Unless your watching your sites 24x7, you'll never really know how much Dreamhost goes offline - it was a REAL eye opener.

I logged into my control panel the other day and they are giving 10TB of data transfer? Puhleeze.... if the server could stay online for more than 20 minutes, and wasn''t overloaded to the teeth then MAYBE you could squeeze a TB a month out of it... but 10? Will someone please sue them for dishonest advertising?

When i started off, i went with 3 different virtual hosts and i have had terrible experiences with them so i took the dive and got a dedicated box, problems solved. Not saying anything is wrong with your bro approved virtual host, just personally id would not go back to hosting on a virtual account.

The problem is too many hosts share their IP's on virtual servers and stuff as many people on them as they possibly can. Of course, they have to in order to be able to sell at the rates they do.

While in theory are are basically correct, but there are some major factors you are leaving out such as, How many idiots are on that better server? how many bogus scripts are each of the idiots trying to run? How much traffic at any given time is each user using? the list goes on as to whay a dedicated is much better if it is specked nicely and the price is competitive. Also no matter what any host offers some people here especially the newbs are simply looking for the cheapest hosting available with no regards for anything else (support, quality etc...) simply the lowest price. Then the morons start a thread like this one crying that their 4 dollar virtual host is down again......

I agree with most of that .. This is why overselling host are awfull .. what amazes me is that they manage to convert an unsastified client into a dedicated client ( still unsastified ).

But lets leave the hosting business aside for a while ... and get into the restaurant business....

We all know that some places offer ' all you can eat ' food.... Now are they all shit? No. The ones charging the low dollars end up serving shit and very little of it. You have to wait in line to get finally nothing. Then there are a few places that charge more, have more food ( ressources ) and will replenish as required ( upgrade their servers ) .... but it is still a buffet.

You can always go to a restaurant and order ' a la carte ' ... Great.

But don't go to a McDonald ( that is a budget dedicated ) and expect the value of either a quality virtual or decent dedicated ....

BTW, I recsheduled the install of script of my client for next wednesday at 3:00 PM. It cost him 50.00 tonight for nothing ....
