If you think you have it bad . . .

My daughter just called. I could tell by her voice that she was really appreciative to have someone to talk to, so I asked her what was happening.

She works in the emergency response group of LA County DCFS, so she is used to dealing with a lot of fucked up situations, but they just got a referral that hit her hard.

A 12 year old girl was alone at home with her father, when he just dropped dead.

She has no family and had called 911. Guess the cops got there and called DCFS, but in the meantime, this little girl was sitting alone, with her dead father while she waited for the Coroner's Office to arrive.

Lots of sad stories out in the big city.

Well, this is in the South Bay area, so I highly doubt it was heat related, but you never know.

Stories like that make my heart hurt. That poor little girl, what a crappy way to have human mortality shoved in your face.

I've always been a very soft touch when it comes to other peoples' suffering. I've gotten more callous over the years in a lot of ways, but I don't think I'll ever completely get over stuff like this.

Man that sucks

Something similar happened to my cousin...she was in the house with her dad when she was about 15 and her dad had a heart attack and he died in her arms...the fucked up part was that he had just gotten a physical the day before and was waiting for the wife to get back home so they could go and get the results.

I still remember the look on my dads (it was his older brother) face when we got the call...

Yup, that's a toughie. Anyone working in EMS or the medical field really has to have the ability to distance themselves and empathize rather than sympathize, or they'll eventually go crazy from all the horrible situations that happen out there.

I've got tons of such stories myself from my years working in a hospital. This one kind of reminds me of one of the saddest, a 48 yr old man dropped dead of a heart attack at his daughter's wedding. He was rushed to our E room but was DOA. I'll never forget all these dressed up people from the wedding party and the bride & groom coming in and finding out the news.

You either let it be the cause of your self-destruction or you find a way to get past it and continue on helping people and doing your job the best you can.

Have you heard of Antonio Puerta - the soccer player who drop unconscious during the match and died later on? That was pretty disturbing too

The story

The story is really sad, but what is really sad is that your daughter needed someone to talk to and all she had to turn to for support was her ignorant moronic father.

Your daughter must have a sympathetic heart, I would have disowned your ignorant ass years ago.

Your daughter should take consolation in the fact that she also helps people every day in her job. As difficult as it may to have to contend with situations as the one she described, I'm sure she has some heartwarming stories as well.

As she gains experience, she will learn to cope with tragedy better, and thus be more and more able to help people that suffer such tragic losses.

At one point, I think I told you before, I wanted to be a social worker. I worked with severely physically and mentally handicapped children, many with terminal illnesses - it really changed my outlook on life.

Although I still felt great pain and sympathy for the kids and their families, I was happy knowing that I could provide them with some positive comfort and relief, if only by providing a caring shoulder for them to cry on.

You have a good daughter (and son, too)...

God bless,

ADG

Oh, she deals with some pretty fucked up shit 5 days a week. That is why we have our weekly father-daughter dinner every Thursday, so she can vent, unwind, and whatever else she needs to do to get in a better frame of mind.

I think this one just made her thankful that she had her dad, that she could call and always makes time for her.

I know we both look forward to Thursdays.
