Yup, that's a toughie. Anyone working in EMS or the medical field really has to have the ability to distance themselves and empathize rather than sympathize, or they'll eventually go crazy from all the horrible situations that happen out there.
I've got tons of such stories myself from my years working in a hospital. This one kind of reminds me of one of the saddest, a 48 yr old man dropped dead of a heart attack at his daughter's wedding. He was rushed to our E room but was DOA. I'll never forget all these dressed up people from the wedding party and the bride & groom coming in and finding out the news.
You either let it be the cause of your self-destruction or you find a way to get past it and continue on helping people and doing your job the best you can.
