Well, Hoss, there's a lot of truth in what you posted, but we didn't do it all by ourselves. It's a pretty simplistic take on a very complicated picture.

There are some folks who believe that our nuclear policy put those in Europe in greater danger - but protected ourselves. There are some who regarded our policy as less than the benevolent gesture that you seem to regard it. That becomes very clear when you realize that even at the highest level of troop committment in Europe, our plans called for nuking the Russians - in Berlin and West Germany. That's the tactical nukes we would have used on the Russian/Warsaw Pact troops, because we knew we couldn't stop them any other way, and has nothing to do with the big boys pointed at Russia proper.

Now, don't know about you - but if you tell ME "I'm gonna nuke you to save you" I will tell you to fuck off.

I am aware that some of the people of European countries did not like us having nuclear missiles in their countries, as well as strategic and tactical nukes for our aircraft. Their governments were smarter than the fringe people (which is normal) and welcomed our umbrella and our troops. Our strategy always intended NATO forces to stay coventionally weak, in comparison to Soviet Forces, so that the Soviets would know we would have to use our nukes. This proved to be a good strategy and all NATO countries went along with this policy, because they wanted our protection. As far as ""I'm gonna nuke you to save you", Allied forces destroyed a major portion of Europe in order to save it. It is called war. As for being simplistic it is and was.

Once again, I don't entirely disagree with you. I would point out, however, that rebuilding after WWII took 15 years. Rebuilding after a nuclear exchange might not be able to BEGIN for 50. Further, the policy was in part why France forced our troops out, and while the NATO governments went along with it, they didn't have much of a choice.

There were many reasons, why France did what they did, not the least of which is, they have been pissed at the US even prior to the end of the Second World War. NATO Generals, were probably included (I don't know this to be fact but it sounds logical) in the development of a strategy to contain the Soviet Union. Whatever the case was they went along with the strategy, because they wanted America's protection. Extensive use of Nukes would have presented more of a problem, as regards rebuilding, than the destruction done by conventional weapons, and that is a fact. It is now rhetorical because the strategy kept the Soviets contained until its collapse and the NATO countries are still intact.
