"What Europe gave the world in the last 100 years?"

Well, a lot actually.

===========
"Almost every American has some direct relation to WWII."

Yup. Most that I know. My grandfather served in the Navy. I have his medals.

============
"we have bigger and better bombs. "

THIS is what makes America great. :-)
BIG EXPENSIVE WEAPONS!

(NOTE: Hockey makes Finland great. That is good too.)

============
"In 1997, the United States gave $6.88 billion in non-military aid to developing countries."

Generous. Don't forget the military aid! Having a large population shouldn't be held against a country.

I have a better idea. Since you dont like US stop using any US based program. I am sure you dont need bad US dollars. You can start your own European based programs and cheat each other, since most of the cheaters are Europeans.

I have been to most EU states and never had these problems, I own real estate in several states so I get to travel alot and never was I stopped for speeding.

Maybe you shouldn't drive 100 miles per hour?

How about the blacks in the US that get stopped without a reason? Are they innocent too?

That's patently untrue. Sure, there were Nazi sympathyzers in Finland, just like there were in lots of other countries, and some collaborated. Finland didn't have a CHOICE about helping Germany, for the most part - and why shouldn't they turn to the only folks offering them help when they were attacked. Hell's bells, Russia finally won only through sheer numbers - they probably lost 10x the number of troops the Finns did.

The whole politics of WWII is a hell of a lot more complicated than most Americans realize. We sat over here watching the facists overthrow the elected government of Spain and did nothing. We watched the Finns attacked by Russia and did nothing. We watched the French and others be overrun and did very little.

America is the evil empire? Compared to who? Iraq? China? Where there aren't many freedoms. America cannot be compared to a single country because we are a melting pot of pretty much everyone. If we were truly so terrible then why are there so many people trying to get in? Life is better here. Standards of living high, it is simple to get a basic education, and only here do people actually have the hope of being successful. The middle class in this country support the rich and the very poor by paying high taxes. Mostly to fund glut in entitlements for the poor and pork projects for all members of government. I'd agree that most Americans don't have a clue but we do value freedom, freedom of speech, and human rights, something that is a unique value system. I don't know of another country where these values are held as high as the US. As far as the brand name and such that non-Americans have access to, those products are probably the staples of their entire economy and are probably produced locally which provides jobs.

Sometimes it is fun to be an American after Sept 11? I can't and wouldn't want to turn on/off my citizenship like a light switch. I'm very proud of who I am and where I'm from. I pitty that you are taking the narrow view. However, I would fight and die to protect your 'freedom' to speak your views even if you wouldn't return the favor.

Just my :2 cents:

I agree with what max said .. except on one thing ..

"the middle class supports the rich on its taxes" .. that is pretty far from the truth... the rich supports EVERYONE .. 95% of the taxes here are paid by the uppoer 10% of the income population.

HOWEVER ... a lot of what he said was dead on. And for those of you non-US citizens who think that we are caught up with brand names and all that shit, can you please tell me why every FOREIGN familiy I see in the states is clad in an incredibly outlandish display of brand names. It's like I'm walking by a fuckin store! Asians, Middle Easterners, Mexicans, Europeans .. everybody blows their wads on brand name clothing for god knows what reason .. That's why Costco is blowing up, cuz you can get cheap ass name brand shit for almost nothing ...

One more thing. for those of you posting on this board talking about how shitty it is here in america ... please consider this... In your country you'd probably be lynched for publicly saying half the things you do on here.

Off the top of my head?

The radio (assuming marconi), theory of relativity, birth of quantum mechanics, neon lights, von braun's rocket, discovery of penicillin, aspirin, cathode ray tube, modern submarine, sold first automobile (benz), cloning (Dolly, Britain).

Porsche, Ferarri, mercedes, BMW, ...

Amazing number of great mathematicians (see Hungary), physicists, etc. many of which left Europe during WW II.

Many more I am sure. I have a poor memory.

OH! And the BIKINI!

Drew Pal,

I have never seen a more intelligent person than you, you must have had your education at Harvard university. Obviously not at Oxford university because that one is based in Europe..... and well we all know how you feel about Europe.

Just the Village Idiot 09-10-2002 10:28 AM

These European pseudo-intellectuals crack me up.

"The problem we have with America is that their government thinks they know what's best for the whole world. But they don't *I* and my countrymen do!"

The problem with perceptions is that you are always locked in your own.

American's (for the most) believe their perception is right and people from all around the world (for the most part) think their countries perceptions are right. Sometimes they agree and sometimes they don't.

When you break it down this way the only difference is power. Plain and simple power.

To be helpless when you think/know you're right is a horrible thing and often leads to a hatred of the "oppressor".

Pretty simple acutally -- but what do I know...

I'm only an American living in the Eastern Bloc.

freedom compared to china, russia, yes that might be true, but in my fucking country the highest politicans or bankers can travel by train, they don't have to be scared by terrorists, and if you say that switzerland is fucking tiny, smaller than one of your bigger cities, yes that might be true!! but our banks still control more private equity than everyone else!

man, i like america, i like americans (unlike labret does). but some folks overthere are fucking clueless and naive. i have seen interviews of gi's in afghanistan! fuck, they really believe they help someone else besides their own government which want to secure that oil pipline in northern afghanistan.

i tell you, i am fucking scared of the us goverment. the us should start to respect international treaties then it would get back political respect. the us could make a worldwide peace, but some governmental fucker just dont want.

Is the only comparison we Americans hear about is Switzerland? I commend the Swiss and how well their society works however they don't support a multi ethnic population of 250 million people. Also, how's that Nazi gold coming? You know, when you were supposed to be 'neutral?' Seriously though, you lived in the outback in the mid West. The US is as diverse as driving from one State to the next. Like how Europeans differ. The point that you so clearly miss is that we are unique as are our ideals. Our government may not be perfect but I never hear the Swiss government spearheading anything other than talks. Many times action is the appropriate course. Keep in mind, it is a big bad world out there.

Finland fought alone against a mighty Soviet Union. Basically everyone's grandfather was in the war and actually fought in major fucked-up places. as someone mentioned , Russia 25 million deaths. Germany lot more than USA. You could go on and on.

Yet, the people who mostly BRAG about WW2 are Americans. That's because they never really get to experience that war in personal level, or did they? You American bragger, was YOUR grandfather in WW2, or are you just bullying because you know someone who's grandfather's cousin was in the war.

Rights that are set forth by the Constitution of the United States are neither questionable nor should they be debated by uninformed quasi?socialist Europeans. (This is not to say that all Europeans are Socialists.) For one reason. It's not their business. I don't plan on BEING European, So I dont give a crap about their socialism? Just dont try to export it here.

PornoDoggy 09-10-2002 10:58 AM

Talking about relatives in the war ... my father had a little disagreement with some law enforcement folks over some high-school bullshit in the summer of 1940, and he decided that joining the service was going to provide better accomodations than other options being discussed. Now, he listened to enough radio and read enough news to know there was a war coming (even if the Republicans in the Senate didn't), so he enlisted in the Coast Guard in the hopes of helping defend the Mississippi River from the Nazis.

At the train station when he was getting ready to ship out, his recruiter said, "Oh, by the way." Now, anyone who has been in the service knows that's not a good sign. The recruiter proceeds to inform my father that the Coast Guard becomes a part of the Navy during a national emergency, AND that Roosevelt had already declared the emergency. By March or April of 1941 my old man was on a WWI-era destroyer escort hunting submarines in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland. He also made two convoys to Russia and was close enough to the beach on D-Day (a DE is a very small ship) to see what was going on.

Can any of us honestly say how we would have acted living in a Nazi occupied country when we cared and loved our family and friends?

Self-preservation of self and family causes a lot of interesting decisions.

Everything sounds so easy talking about something that happened 60 years ago to people we don't know (for many of us).

Ive heard americans express good understanding why.

The way corporate and political america conducts business is percieved as bullish and provocative. I know this is how americans behave and compete nationally but its considered rude and agressive in many parts of the world.

When your in a group you need to show some consideration and understanding for the others needs and position. Especially if your the strongest part or you will look like a bully that pursues your own interst over the corpses of others...

In all your arguments about the Winter War you're somehow bypassing the volunteers topic and choose "poor little Finland" attitude instead.
