US now ranks 42nd in life expectancy

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20228552/

that's kinda shocking.

the last thing the guy who did the study from the Univesity of Washington says:

?The starting point is the recognition that the U.S. does not have the best health care system. There are still an awful lot of people who think it does.?

Ok her are some factors.

More Americans are obese than ever and getting less exercise than ever. This is something people themselves can control.

If you only count WHITE people then the US life expectancy is as high as anywhere. I'm sure some counties near the top like I'm sure Norway and Japan have ONE race and let's face it blacks bring down the average for everyone. Not because blacks are genetically inclined to live less, but because of social/economical circumstances the vast majority of blacks live under in the US.

Blacks gotta be involved in this somehow too... they are probably too poor to properly feed the kids... (jk, but who knows, maybe that's really the reason)

Didn't Micheal Moore recently do a movie on healthcare issuse? Does anybody remember the name of it?

From what I understand it exposes why the U.S. has such poor healthcare. I'm not trying to be unpatriotic, but we first have to acknowledge that there is a problem in order to do something about it, if that's even possible at this point.

Non-Hispanic black women had the highest infant mortality rate in the United States in 2004 – 13.60 per 1,000 live births compared to 5.66 per 1,000 births among non-Hispanic white women. Women of Cuban ethnicity in the United States had the lowest infant mortality rate – 4.55 per 1,000 live births.

The infant mortality rate in the United States in 2004 was 6.78 infant (under 1 year of age) deaths per 1,000 live births, not significantly different from the rate of 6.84 in 2003, according to a report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The quality of health in the US is among the best. That is for those that can afford to go to the doctor. Here in lies the problem. Those against universal health care don't realize that in the end we all end up paying for those who are uninsured and that under universal care the costs would be much less and more direct.

As at 2004 (same year in the link) - Canada's life expectancy is 80.2 years.

That excludes "Black Canadians", "male Chinese Canadians" and "Hispanic short guys" - they all live to 120. Love the logic on this thread

Don't be a retard. the vat majority of American are HWITE and yes black skew the results. So no I'm not going by a general life expectancy for ALL Americans I'm going to look at WHITE Americans. Canada has very few blacks and those they do have do not have the issues that black Americans have.

Perhaps you missd this

Non-Hispanic black women had the highest infant mortality rate in the United States in 2004 ? 13.60 per 1,000 live births compared to 5.66 per 1,000 births among non-Hispanic white women.

The subject is life expectancy for those born in 2004 - not a series of subplots on race or any other topic.

You still don't get it. The haters here are using the US's low ranking as a way fo saying "see we suck". Now only do WHITES and see how high we move up the list. Now that's not being racist. It's showing where the REAL problem lies.

Damn liberal media always focusing on the negative and never reporting any of the positive things that happen.

Reports like this encourage our enemies and demoralize our allies.

We're providing health care over there so that the sick people don't follow us home. If we brought all the health care home it would be more dangerous for America.

This is all part of the larger strategy of the war on death.

It has nothing to do with "haters", "race" or "we suck".

Every country has potential deviant segments - it's fair to say anyone living in poverty in any country is going to have a lesser life expectancy etc. Generally, people living in non-industrialized countries have a chance of living longer.

First, most of the people on this board who earn a living from adult receive most of their money for the United States. Say it has shitty healthcare, a retarded President, etc., but calling a country that is writing your paychecks a third world country is ignorant.

As for the stats, it doesn't have a whole lot to do with our healthcare industry, but moreso with the income and educational levels of parents. In the industrialized world, infants typically don't die from basic diseases in hospitals, they die from accidents and neglect from parents. The UK has seen a large rise in infant deaths in the past couple years which has been found to coorelate to their widening gaps in wealth.

No, I'm not clueless - and I never said anything about Africa which is a totally different scenario and related more to starvation and disease.

Why do you think Andorra is top of the list? There are plenty countries where the lifestyle does not revolve around earning a buck, but concentrates more on quality of life. In these scenarios, there is likely to be higher life-expectancy rates - tho plenty "deviants" via other reasons.

The name of the documentary is SiCKO, and I saw it a few days ago. He makes very valid points.

I am Canadian, and I pay out the ass in taxes, but I would still rather our system over yours. No offense intended to Americans.

Canada places about 11th. The life expectancy for 10th position is 80.42 years, and Canada's expectancy is 80.22. So I'd extrapolate that Canada is in about 11th place.

Canada: 80.22 Years
USA: 77.85

Pretty big difference actually...

The average life expectancy at 80 or even 77 still seems pretty high, for an "average" number to me. That's a lot of old people.

If the US was #1, would all these same people be trying to make up excuses why other countries did poorly when they shouldn't or would they just proclaim themselves to be great and dismiss what any other country says as their own excuses?
Would they try to figure out whom to add or exclude from the equation that makes them #1 or would they just dismiss others who say "well, maybe it's because...." ?

Things that make you go hmmm.....

You are being racist. Because it's not about the color of a mans skin it's about his wealth and ability to pay.

Now if you're saying most poor people in the US are black and therefore unable to get decent medical care then you would be closer to the truth. Examine the life expectancy of afro/Caribbeans earning $250,000 a year against whites earning $250,000 and see if there's any difference.

Why are afro/Caribbeans poorer than white Americans on average? Bad culture heritage, low investment in the areas of poor people, bad returns on investment in these areas. Lots of reasons.

The situation with health care in the US is down to the government and the people who vote for it. A good pointer towards this present governments stance is, I believe this is correct, it was included in the Patriot Act that bringing in cheaper drugs from Mexico or Canada was a crime.

As I said I believe it to be correct.

My mother is diabetic and lives in CA, she pays through the nose for drugs that are 10% of the price 100 miles away. Well I pay through the nose to be honest.

There is a high level of cultural genocide in some of the poorer intercities in the US, which I'm sure has a effect on the numbers...
