Drive through any low income area of pretty much any city, especially in the spring after the snow melts away and there it is, bags, cups, items of clothing, egg crates, candy wrappers, cans, and all other manner of CRAP all over the streets and boulevards and back lanes and alleys.

I get that the people living in those areas don't generally make all that much money, but why does it automatically mean so many of them abide living like utter slobs in slobville, Slobcrapistan?

I took a drive through Winnipeg's north end last week, and it was quite frankly utterly disgusting what I saw.

Someone please tell me why it is the way it is.

Why does low income automatically mean it's okay to toss your litter and crap on the ground instead of in a garbage can?

a) City doesn't clean those areas as much as the rich areas
b) There's alot more people there living off of garbage, so they take it from rich areas, and bring it there to do whatever they do with it (for shelter, to sell bottles, ...)

I live in the core area of the city and yes it is very dirty and cluttered with garbage.
folks from out of the area sometime drop the trash on our streets. but mostly it is the folks who live in the area just really don't care about shit at all
so they just throw it anywhere they please.
the rest try to keep it clean but it is hard when you have dumpster divers that pull the bags of garbage out of the bins and rip them open spreading it all over the place, then the wind gets it and it is all over the place.
The city takes it time getting around to doing spring clean upo and then it seems to wait until the last days to get to our area.
of course the snow covered it until now.
on our street we have gone out and done it our selfs and it really pisses me off to see someone walk by and trow thier garbage in front ofd my building.
I already freaked out on one dude for doing that, scared the shit out of him.
hopefully the city gets to it soon.

You're right, I did see a few groups of people on certain blocks out picking up trash, and those people should be commended.

I can't say I think all those dumpsters lining the streets in that north end looks very classy, but I guess they are a necessary evil considering the amount of garbage there. Too bad so many can't actually get and keep the trash IN those bins. :D

Don't know what it's like up there in Canada, but down here in America, those type of neighborhoods are full of third world people who come from the dirtiest, filthiest countries in the world such as the dominican republic,, it's natural for them to live in filth.

Add to that that several people are often low income due to laziness, which translates to too fucking lazy to clean up their shit. (This don't include those who are low income due to physical limitations)

I'm telling you, if I'm out walking with my dog and he happens to shit and I don't have a bag with me, I will actually walk home, get a bag, and go back and pick up that shit and put it in a garbage can.

Can't stand littering, can't stand people who let their pets shit everywhere in public and don't pick it up.

An area I used to live in was middle class, save for one "crazy old cat lady" house. The house was clearly in need of some TLC and there was literally garbage piled all over her verandah and front lawn. One time she cornered me when I was walking back from the shops, and tried to see what grocery items I had in my bags... like poking her hand in to open it and have a look!

a number of reasons.
#1 prob the biggest is population density. there are simply more people living in lower income areas.. the richer the area the farther apart the houses.

#2 they get cleaned less by the city.

#3 poor people are prob more likely to litter in general because your much less likely to respect something crappy ( i.e. if you own a brand new hummer you will likely treat it with respect and cleanliness , if you own an old dodge your prob mor elikely to toss your half eaten hot dog on the floor

personally i think picking up dog shit is ridiculous, then again i dont live in i highly dense population. When i lived in california , the rich assholes would always walk their dogs by my house to shit on my lawn ( they didnt have a lawn ) , then again maybe its just stupid dogs/owners . I wouldnt see as big of a problem inm not picking up dog shit if people didnt intentionally take their dogs to shit in their neighbours yards. My dog is pretty smart when i walk him he tries to take a shit in the neighbours yard but i say " HEY" and he stops..

parts of a city that generate revenue are takin care of to keep them generating revenue. This helps to break that distructive pattern.

Some interesting theories in this thread so far.

For those saying "they get cleaned less by the city", I have to disagree here, at least as it pertains to my city. Not only is there regular garbage pickup in those areas just as in any other part of the city, but Winnipeg placed extra large trash bins in front of every house on every street in the north end, something you don't see in most other areas. They were specifically issued and put there years ago for the sole purpose of (hopefully) prompting people to keep neighborhoods cleaner.... although they look godawful.

It's actually sad that the city had to take that measure. Those big ugly bins along with all the garbage and crap strewn all over are just another testament to the fact that there are a lot of people living in those areas who are seemingly too dense and yes, fat, lazy, snd stupid I suppose, to make the effort to put their shit in a bin sitting 10 feet from their front door instead of tossing it on the ground.

I watched a guy the other week pull up to a stopsign, roll down the window of his shitmobile and literally dump the contents of his car ashtray onto the street and drive off. I was a bit too far away to get the license but fuck.... it makes me wonder if the whole world is a huge toilet that is badly in need of a good flush.

Gee, I guess my rant really wasn't over. :D

You know, I once had a big chow (sp?) dog living down the lane from my old house who used to trot down the lane and sift through my garbage once a week, then take a big dump. The poor people are poor for a reason: They don't work hard. They don't work hard because they are lazy, which is the reason they can't be bothered to clean up their neighborhoods.

You'll notice that the rich people, who are always busy working, somehow seem to be able to find the time to clean up their yards and streets (or to pay someone to clean up).
