Music is always evolving and moving and changing and sometimes goes in cycles...rap is no different...something breaks through, then others move in to that area and it starts to become oversaturated...it happened with hair metal, grunge, death metal, etc. and now it's happening to rap...

I'm not a rap fan at all, but can't ignore the millions of albums sold...so rap will go through a big cycle and comeback in a little different form, then the process will start over...

I was thinking of people like KRS-One, or Common, Mos Def, or even Public Enemy. Most of this stuff was more socially conscience that the stuff that's around today.

I'm not saying that everything that comes out now is about gang banging and riding on "dubs" and bling, but the sad reality is that the majority of it is. Especially if you put on BET...what are you exposed to? What it boils down to is what the media gives us exposure to. If the radio and TV show these new rappers talking about pimps and cars and shooting things then the majority of the population are going to assume that is what rap has evolved into.

It is the music industry in general that is to blame. Look at any genre targeted at youth. Bands or people last an album or two and then they are yesterday?s news. You really think that Britney is going to make a come back? Music is no longer timeless. I guarantee people are not going to be sitting around in 20 years with their kids or friends listening to their favorite Sum 41 album or their favorite Snoop Dog album. Music today just doesn't have the staying power it used to in my opinion...but I digress.

My point was that the older rappers, the originators had a message and were fighting against something or someone that was oppressing them, they had a purpose and if they got paid for it then good. Today guys you've never heard of drop their first single and they already have millions of dollars behind them like they have been in the game for decades. Anyways, the point is that rap is dead or dying a slow at the hands of mass media because they think they found "the" formula to make quick money and now they are replicating it like crazy and shoving it down our throats.

oh and by the way...when it comes to whit rappers I prefer Vanilla Ice.

You're such a silly crybaby.

It's like you are secretly in love with me and have to mention my name to get attention or someting. You act like a jilted lover dude.
It's fucking sad because you must have some really terrible circustances in your life to make you behave the way you do.

The guy responed to your post and you had to post like 4 times to reply to it like you lost your mind or something.

If I wanted to make my screen name a very high search term then all I have to do is post "Fuck you Franck" once a day and you will then make 20 threads with my screen name in it. It's like you have no control over your anger and your anger is usually about the most simplest of things that other people simply ignore.

BTW: How old are you?

I understand that you don't like rap, but I don't understand why you care that it exist to the point that you need it to go away.

I don't like much rock and roll, but I don't care how much rock music is out there. I have a dial on my radio and change the station.

Want to see more 'mature' rap?

We have 2 studios here in town, and our artists (for the most part) pride themselves on having a more positive message.

http://www.myspace.com/iblackguy

Check out the song "Just Think About It" for an idea of what I'm talking about.

Rap is dying because all of the best artists are dead, take any music genre today and kill off the top artists

2pac
biggie
big L
big pun

and it will never be the same. these guys set the bar high and now they are all gone and no one has come into their place, and probably never will.

99% of music today is just quickly packaged up and shit out there.

and it will not die because:

A) rock sucks
B) dance music sucks

I don't care if it completely dies... just as long as it is out of the mainstream and I don't have to hear it all of the time.. I mean, I'd rather Christian rock or hymns than cRap...

Seriously, i'd love to hear that interracialtoons guy talk with his black friends about white people. The words he'd use. I can guarantee you it wont be too nice. But hey, lets all accept that because he is black? No fuck that. He is a 100% racist period.

And you know what, i hardly give a shit about that. The fact that he denies it AND acts as if every white person is out to get him that is what fucking annoys me about this dickface. Not only is he a big fat racist, he is also a fucking hypocrite.

As a die hard fan, its sad to see it fading away to garbage, but there are a few people who keep the hope alive for me, like Kanye, Common, and The Roots are some examples.

I am over the sex, money and rims talk.

Rap has been dead for a long time, and I have seen most of the originals in concert.
DMC
LL
Tu Pac
2 Live Crew
Public Enemy
Biz (yes Biz Markee, "oh baby you..you got what I neeyeed..")
Only white teen agers would buy the crap that is being produced today.
It's crap!
I used to be a big fan, but the shit that has been coming out in the last 4 years makes me want to throw up.

And the little suburban "wiggers" wouldn't survive 1 minute in Compton, NYC, Detroit, or any other urban area. Anybody can rule the "burbs".
Makes me want to pop them all in the mug, for being such a bunch of Jack Asses.

It will be interesting to see these kids grow up, uneducated, at 30 years old, looking like a Snoop Dog reject, the way we looked at people in the 80's that were still Hippies.

I listen to rap, but I am very selective as to the songs. I like songs like Runaway love by ludacris and others like that, hell, I even like real nigga roll call (im white btw so dont get pissed at the nigga comment, its the name of the song lol) I just don't like that constant, I hate you im gonna shoot you i got my 500 dollar car on 5,000 dollar wheels type stuff....I try to look for stuff I can relate to more and occasionally go to songs I can't just because I like the beat.

hip hop music will always be here . . right now it is dominating every music genre . . there is not one music genre without influences directly from that peticular culture . .. .

if you like hip hop music you should not focus on BET or MTV ... they play some nice tracks once in a while . . but mostly you will hear commercial garbage . . not even worthy of the name music . ..

the lyrics are not everything ... beats are just as important ... and that aspect of the game is evolving right now in a nice direction .. some tracks are hot just because of the nice beat ..

for example .. this one I love . . I think it is as good as brand new . . Scott Storch dissing Timbaland . ..

http://videos.onsmash.com/v/JQHdWiBpGhcsjrAi

yes he is showing his cars here . .and talking big about his ghetto pass that timbaland allegedly would not have . . nevertheless . . this shit is fuckin hot!!!! say what you want . . but even though he is not rapping about how he is going to save every impoverished child and prey for a better future for all of us . . it stays art .. you figure out why . .

some of the views expressed here are really easy ... no real thought put into it . . just someone else's opinion you make yours because you think it sounds ok . .

ignorance is widespread in the rap game . . but that does not mean it is new .. you should do some research about some of the 'social conscious' rappers out there . . there arent that many . . not now .. not in the past . . .

should there be more ? ? maybe yes . .why not . . but is it new that they arent there ? ? fuck no !

how did Tupac and Biggie end up dead again ? ?? hmmm . .let me think . . fuckin idiots in this thread naming them as example ... nothing against them . . love their music . . still listen to it a lot .. but claiming that they were any better message wise than todays rapperS ?? ? you have no idea . . and should really do some research on the topics you think you can have an opinion on before expressing it . . . .

the problem I see right now with hip hop music is that there arent that many people out there that actually understand it . . understand where it comes from . . where it is heading for and where it should be heading for

and those who actually do understand it like to keep their mouth shut so they can make some more money ..

is money killing hip hop ? NO ... can money kill hip hop ? NO

take Nas for example . . he a hypocrite . . ok .. some of us know that the title 'hip hop is dead' was only meant to provoke people and make people think about the future of hip hop . . nothing more . . and clearly that is what lots of people are doing

but .. there are also the nitwit idiot wigger bitches who actually take it serious . .and think Nas actually thinks hip hop is dead or that its dying . . it is not . . alive and kiickin

some more reading for those interested

Funny that you only brought up my name after somebody else called you a racist.
Do you think I emailed them and told them to do that?
Or is it more likely that they recognized an asshole all on their own?

Finally:

There are lost of out-right racist post on this board directed at a number of races but I have never seen you call anyone a racist unless they were black.
Explain that.

Its not dead yet, but it will be, but you still get a few good rappers here and there. When that stops, thats when it will die.

Teenagers need an image to conform to - music or sports is usually where they get their identity - right now, a lot of teenagers are getting into the emo music and the emo "look" which is the complete opposite of hip hop style - which explains why rap is dying. Youth culture drives the music industry. Always has, always will. As much as I hate emo, at least it's "kind of sort of" rock music Anything's better than rap anyways

the point is not racism, the article suggests that a good majority of white youth listen to rap. My suggestion is not that either race (or any race) has more troubles than another, but that making a fashion statement from the struggles of one is simply not cool. Here you have white youths who grew up in a suburb attempting to overcome either their boredom or 'uncoolness' by taking on the habits and dress of a community that is making their own statement.

My feelings are that rap itself is not dying, but that it has become so over-saturated with copycats driven by record exec's that it has lost its entire meaning and soul. Yes it appears to have dropped 21% in one year, a huge decrease. But the idea of an individual or community needing to sing and vent the difficulties it faces in this world will never die. Whether it be in the back of a bus, the hills of the capital in Washington or the CD - blacks or any community will find a venue to vent and speak of the difficulties they face. That will never die.

What I hope does is the those with a lack of imagination that they have to imitate someone else just to get noticed or find approval in whoever they want to impress. I can only hope that just being yourself is good enough for any youth to strive for.

I understand why you have this view but I see it a little different.

Whites are not trying to emulate Blacks; they are emulating a musical culture that orginated in Black society.

Hip-hop culture is only a segment of black society and it's a segment that blacks are not born to emulate but one of thier chosing.
(ie... Obama and Colon Powell don't have "bling" or "Grills")
Whites also have the freedom to chose this segment to emulate.

People who like punk-rock dress a certain way regardless of their race.
The dress and behavior is part of the culture. The same applies to rap/hip-hop.

What's unfair about claiming "they want to be black" is that the claim is made if "they" emulate 50 cent but not if they emulate Bill Cosby, or Prince, or Michael Jordan!

This thread touches on something that is really silly in america --
where if I buy a BMW then I'm "trying to be White" and if you buy a Cadillac then you are "trying to be Black". And the silliness is not with me and you for the cars we chose but it lies with the people who insist on making a racial issue out of it.

people are just trying to have a good time in their life and they have choices.
They can chose path "A" or path "B" or "C"...etc...That's FREEDOM!!!

Too bad some people don't want others to have that freedom and try to criticise them into chosing path "A" or suffer bannishment from "OUR" society.

from my perspective I do see white youths attempt to emulate Blacks; as well as they are emulating a musical culture that originated in Black society. (paraphrasing your line)

white youth mimic blacks - over exaggerating it even, at least the ones I see in Toronto. It gets very silly sometimes and reminds me of that Steve Martin movie The Jerk where he suddenly realized he was white and not the child of a poor Black family, which to him explained why he couldn't keep rhythm. White youth do NOT have a culture that they can call their own, so they need to steal it from the Black youth/singers since they appear cooler. What is most disappointing is an adult attempting to appear 'hip' by pretending to be gangsta - but I won't get into that.

well define dying?

if there is a drop of 21% in sales in one year, and no rap artist is in the top 10 when they have been for years past - how do you define that?

no it isn't gone, and they will be making more records - but there has been a decline in the past 2 years - 21% is a very strong number, thats huge in the record making industry - that's almost a 1/4 of all sales gone in one year.

If your website had content and you noticed a drop in sales of a 1/4 I think you would consider either doing a major campaign or start looking for replacement content thinking that the niche is not as popular anymore - or - in other words - dying
