There might another underlining reason that rap is seeing a decline....the internet.

A close friend of mine's little brother was one of those god aweful wigger types. You know, the kind of person that learned about everything (what's cool, what's not) off of MTV.

Then the internet came. As the web became more widespread, all of sudden, these young kids now have access to music from all over the world.....good music that'll never see the shelf of a music store.

When i talk with him now, he's completely different. When I asked him about his 'wigger-ness' as joke, he said something that was kind of interesting. He said, "when i was free to see what else was out there, it changed everything." I asked him what he meant about 'free' and he said "all i had to go by for music was whatever the radio stations and music videos we're playing...as i soon as i wasn't forced with those only options, i found tons of new music i never knew existed and realized how lame rap is."

Was an interesting conversation. And even though he's just one person, i think there's plenty more kids out there realizing the same thing. Change is coming. You're no longer locked down to a radio station that plays the same gay ass rap song 40 times a day behind the latest Britney Spears song. You can listen to some guy playing music from his bedroom from the other side of the world. These days, you have choice.

With the internet, internet radio, satellite radio and the future of internet radio players, the next 10-20 years is going to be really fascinating to watch. I for one can't wait till half these radio stations lose money cause listeners are scatter all over the place listening to music from all over the world over their portable internet radio players.
