FRIENDLY TIP: If you are losing your hair, here is how you can fix it

if you are dedicated and passionate enough about it. With a combination of propecia, laser treatment and hair transplants, you can make any head look normal. The cost is not prohibitive, imagine spending 10k and having a full head of hair for the rest of your life.

i started losing my hair when i was 18, but now, at 31, it looks completely normal, and i dont care about talking about it, no pics though

thought i would start this thread to pass that information on, i am very grateful to the guy that recommended it to me, completely changed my life for the better

Most people nowadays just shave the rest off. They think people around them will think 'oh, he's not bald, he just shaves his head'.... But we're onto you, baldies.

Sure, ill give some background

Started losing my hair when I was around 18, when I found out I started wearing a hat all of the time. Also got on rogaine at that time. ($50/mo.) not sure if it helped but applying it to the scalp 2 times a day was a pain in the ass. A few years later propecia came out and I got on that. My doctor was pretty cool and used to go to her office and she would give me a 6 month supply of samples to take home, that lasted for a few years, then $50/mo. then I decided that the rogaine was not helping very much and stopped using it, not much changed after I stopped. I kept on the propecia for years, then about 4 years ago I friend of mine told me he had gotten implants done and that if I cared enough, to do it. It came down to being just under 5k and I had to go in for a consultation, then come back a few weeks later to do it, that?s what it comes down to, was like no big deal at all to do.

Btw, they had an option to finance it over 18 months, and the cost of that was about 10% (of 5k), so I told them I would give them all cash and they credited me the$500 they would have had to pay the financing company.

Before the operation, they took you into a room, did some measurements on your head, marked some things. You can basically get 1100 to 1400 transplants from an operation. They slice a thin piece of skin from the back of your head and cut the hairs out from it, then put them into your scamp from tiny holes they have precut. Now, a transplant can be anywhere from 1 to 5-6 hairs, they generally put the single implants along the front and outer parts, and more grouped implants in the middle.

So after the operation, you have a bandage on your head, and your face gets puffy for a few days, you look like a monster. You cant wash your hair for 2 days, then you can gently pour soapy water on your hair for 5 days, then after a week you can put your head under a nozzle and wash it, 2 weeks after the operation they take the stitches out of the back of your head, the scabs around the transplanted hairs fall out about 19 days post-op. That period of time is very uncomfortable, but about a month to 6 weeks out, your normal again

After the operation, some of your existing hair falls out, then for the first 6 months, you have les hair than you did before. Then about 6-8 months out the hairs start to grow and you see the results a year later. Then you are very pleased

I realized that being bald is an option and if one determined enough wanted to have a full head of hair, they could make it happen. For me, it?s a non-issue, a hairpiece was never a good option

Btw, I know about a dozen people that have had this done, its not something many talk about. as its real hair, i dont care as much, and man, its something that changed my life a lot.

and how bald were you when you started this stuff and how long did it take you to get it back?

one thing i noticed about bald guys who get treatment for baldness - they lose perspective and what they think is good really isn't. so they get some transplants and they are so thrilled that there's actually hair where there wasn't any before that they don't even realize that it looks pretty shitty, they're just happy there's hair.

that goes for anything cosmetic actually, i've seen girls with really shitty nosejobs and boob jobs who are very happy with them.

if propecia works how come you also need hair transplants and laser treatment?

Good post.

Everyone seems to be talking about penis size these days, male enhancement pills and gadgets and gizmos... but there are people out there who are, if not fully traumatized by their hair loss, at least very concerned over it. Most probably have no idea what the in's and out's of hair implant surgery entail.

I'll admit I'm one of these guys whose hair is thin and has been slowly thinning since I was 20 or so. I still have a good amount of hair on my head but have from time to time thought of going the transplant route to thicken things up in places.

Originally, I was told by a sales rep that if I got the lasers done, I would get to stop using propecia, but later was told by a doctor that was BS.

To tell you the truth, after the operation about 10 months later, I did not see great results, then came back for a follow up. The doctor put me on the laser for 3 months and after about 2 months my hair got thicker (I guess the blood vessels opening up make the hairs thicker, possibly up to 3x thicker), but it showed

at the beginning, I think the worse of it came from 18-22, before I got on propecia, I combed it over when I had to, but mostly wore a hat. problem is, that?s not a big deal in college, but once you get out in the workforce, cant do it. You also have problems getting into some clubs

it looks good, much better than before, you cant really tell, maybe a little thin. But definitely acceptable (to women at least), im very critical of how it looks, always have been and im very happy with it. The boost to your confidence is amazing.

The propecia stopped the loss, then I put more on with the transplants, is the short answer

Most people that have them, you cant tell they have them, but there are thousands of operations every day. When the celebs go in, its like a weeklong operations, implanting 5-6 thousand at a time

There isnt much when it comes to hairloss. Rogaine + Propecia + Nizorol are the common products you should get on if they start loosing their hair (and care enough about saving it). That will stop or at leats slow it down for several years.

If you lost a lot and are considering a transplant, what a lot of people dont realise or research, is that the doctor you chose can make a HUGE difference. About 3k of grafts from a good doctor will run about 8-12k.

for some good doctors, chek out:
in canada:
http://www.alviarmanihairtransplants...ir-transplant/
http://www.hassonandwong.com/patient...nt-gallery.php

usa:
http://www.fellermedical.com/photogallery/gallery1.htm
http://www.forhair.com/gallery.htm

Ive been losing my hair a few years now and read up on the forums really often. A lot of people who are in the know wil travel from the US to canada just to get a transplant, since canada has 2 of the best docs in the world for it.

I think his is an extreme case. Guys like us who might need just a light patchwork fix here or there wouldn't have to be put through all that I'm sure. I've spoken to a local hair restoration doctor in the past about this. According to him it would take 1 to 4 treatments (surgeries) depending on the case and would cost somewhere between 1-3K, again depending.

One day I may just have a vain moment and go see him again about this. :D

Propecia has a chance of serious side effects, specifically to your libido (google propeca side effects), and transplants can only cover so much scalp if you have a lot of hair loss. If you have lost a lot of hair, you'll need more than one transplant session. Plus don't underestimate the scar left on back of your head from each transplant operation. Some are more visible than others

I went with the other option- I was thinning on top for years and I finally shaved my head a few months ago and I have gotten more compliments from girls and more action quite frankly than ever before.

Some are more visible than others

I went with the other option- I was thinning on top for years and I finally shaved my head a few months ago and I have gotten more compliments from girls and more action quite frankly than ever before.
I started propecia about a month ago, basically I just have a receading hairline and I was told it probably won't grow back but it will prevent further hair loss or slower the hair loss process. I know several people taking it and they pretty much all concur that it's stopped the hair loss and not actually grown the hair back. That's pretty much what I need it for as my case is pretty mild but everyone loves their hair, it makes them look younger and you can't put a price on feeling good about yourself. So for now I'll stick with the pill, and if things get progressively worse I know the transplant operation always exists. I've seen plenty of before and afters at the doctor's office, and the doctor himself showed me his scar and it depends on how much hair they are transplanting. But I'd like to hear more stories if anyone here is taking propecia and their experiences with it.

I can vouche for this... Propecia + Hair Transplants do work.

I got a hair transplate at age 21, and have been taking also propecia since then. Now I'm 24 and my hair is thicker and better looking than at 21.

The only problem with hair transplants is that it leaves a scar for each transplant, (hidden underneath the thick part of your hair) from about ear to ear across the back of your head. If you shaved your head you would see the scar though, and you can feel it. One girl I dated thought I had brain surgery when we were fooling around and she felt the scar on the back of my head lol.

Hair loss is expensive though. Propecia pills are about $2 a pop (once per day) and each procedure is about 4K or so... and you can have a max of maybe 3 or 4 of them.

Propecia can be much cheaper if you buy proscar and cut it into 5ths.

Propecia = Proscar = finasteride
Except proscar is 5mg and proecia is 1mg. So if you tell your doctor your strapped for cash, and tell him you want proscar instead, you can get a prescription for proscar and will just cut it into 5ths, you can stop your hairloss much cheaper.

The better doctors these days use "Tricolosure" or something like that. The scar is much less visible, even when shaved to a number 2 its almost undetectable. Thats why a good doc is key for these procedures. You get what you pay for.

Also, they are working on HM (hair manipulation), whereby they inject cells into yer scalp, or something like that, meaning they have an infinite supply of hair to work with and can give you a full head of hair. That is at best 5 years away, probably more. At the moment they cant control the direction of the hair growth with the HM procedure.

For those who only need about 1000 grafts, theres a procedure where they dont need to slice the back of your head. Its scarless, called FUE. Its more expensive but good for smaller jobs.

Pros: Propecia works well and for a lucky few you can even grow hair back in your temple areas. I?m one of the lucky ones and know for a fact it works well. Also, propecia was originally designed for prostate health and a side effect was it grew hair back.

Cons: Many doctors will not publish this, but propecia has side effects that can be discouraging for most. First, it takes almost a full year to see results and if you stop taking propecia your hair will fall out again. Second, dark circles under your eyes are very common and are known to NEVER go away even after you stop taking it. Also, I personally notice a large percentage of my body hair just stop growing. All hair on my fingers, toes, legs, back, arms, and chest are gone or like peach fuzz. Many guys develop ?bitch tits" so you need to hit the gym. Sexual desire and semen does decrease more then what is published. Also weight gain, testicular and lower abdominal pain is very common and usually means your dosage it too high.

HT

Pros: Most doctors will highly suggest you wait tell you?re 30+ and on propecia before they do the procedure. The reasoning is your age and hair loss (with propecia) will slow and you won?t need future HT so quickly. Second, two excellent doctors out of BC developed a new procedures called the ?lateral slit? technology that is truly amazing. In short, it covers more space with higher density ?look? using less hair and almost impossible to visually see an HT. It?s expensive, but most good HT doctors will only use this technology procedure.

Cons: HT doctors will rarely talk in depth about ?shock loss?. In your balding areas there is still hair, but expect to lose all of this due to the shock of thousands of holes punched in your scalp. The doctors tell you this will grow back, but in truth, you are lucky to get 10% back. After your procedure it can take up to 6-8 months before the new hair starts to grow in and 2 years for the full final results of the procedure. In this duration you probably lost more hair and in possibly need to fill the gap from your new hair and your reseeding original hairline. In short, it?s a catch 22 unless propecia likes you and you are willing to live with the side effects for the rest of your life.
jesus christ (no pun intended ) i'd rather be bald than put up with either one of those options. im 28 and don't have any significant loss. i have long hair, not sure if it just covers it up better or what. my father is bald and i've always worried about if i'll end up the same. my only hope is that the old wives tale is true, you get the baldness jean from your mothers side. as my mothers brothers and father never went bald. but still, i rather be bald than put up with all of that. is it really that bad to be bald?

thanks for the info, I will just take propecia for 5 years until they have this HM thing ready to go, good to know they have that coming up in the near future and I hope it's perfected soon.

I think I'm starting to lose my hair too. It's still in the VERY early stages, but I see it coming. I've gotta talk to my doc about keeping my hair on my head.
