Canadians Living in the USA. There has to be an easier way.

Looking into moving to the US from Canada. And well its not easy at all.
I want to buy a house/rent, I'll pay taxes, and wont even take an americans job.

Has anone here successfully moved from Canada to the US without marriage?
Or even know a way to get a fake marriage set up so I can get citizenship, I hear Britney doesnt do it anymore, so I dont know.

Going down on a 6 month visitor visa and hten having to come back up for the 3 or 6 months befor going back down would suck.

Ugh. I know of someone who has, but she has one hell of a job (which isn't porn related) - I'll pass your ICQ to her; if she has any ideas, she's usually good about hitting people up.

The US has cities that are sunny and warm all year round. The citys in Canada that dont get too cold get a shit load of rain.

I would go somewhere like the virgin islands, but I dont know their laws on porn, and well I dont know if I could meet the kind of people that I would be looking to meet.

I like Pheonix, well the area around there too. Always have. The almost always blue skys, never needing to scrape the windows or shovel snow. And there are lots of girls there too which doesnt hurt.

Visiting has its place... but it means i still have to come back here.. and i sure as hell dont want to have to maintain two residences. Besides the fact that I couldnt afford it.

As a Canadain who is living in US for 12 years, here are your options

1. If you are retired and can show that you got enough $$ money to support your self with out taking an american job you can move to US for 6 months at a time. You dont have to be 65, a friend of mine who is 35 who sold his software company now does this

2. If you have 250K to invest then you can move here on a E1 Visa

3. If you can get a job here that falles into TN Visa then its easy

4. You can get a H1 visa for any job as long as you have a degree or 12 years of work experience

5. Get Married to a US Citizen

Also remember that this country has 12 million illigel alians, so living as part of them is not hard

I don't believe Canadians can get H1's, but I could be wrong. There's one other option that Jay doesn't cover and it's how I came to the US:

1) With an American Business partner, start an American based company
2) As executive management, you now qualify for an L1-A (They're not cheap, but cheaper than a 250k investment for the E1)
3) Once in the US with the L1, you can start your green card sponsorship process under the EB-1 classification which only has an 8 month backlog.

Good luck.

Well the 6 months at the time i can do now with a visitor visa. Hell I can get a ssn with that visa too.

Really #5 is all that would work for me.
I dont really want to work a real job there, and thats the hard part. I just want to live there pay taxes and make my living online.

Being illegal is no good though, If I need to come back to Canada for anything I would be screwed getting back into the us where my then residence would be.

Well this is the Visa I had past few years, but now I got a GC.

The key thing with L1 is that you need to have your own business in Canada and worked for it for 1 year (there has to be a relationship between Canadian and US Entity).

You cant just start a business with a US partner and move on L1.

Completely true - however, the relationship between the 2 companies can be via acquisition; at which point your time served for your Canadian company counts even though the acquisition may have only been a week prior to your application at the border.

You'd have to pay taxes on the complete income in both countries.

I'd also ask the question why a Canadian would want to live in the US - but hey, it's your choice

Something worth noting - the Caribbean has a good number of Canadian folks and, tho sounds odd, there is more of a Caribbean relationship with Canada than with the US.

Porn laws? You lived in North America too long There are no problems generally in the Caribbean re porn - it's not a subject that they are concerned about (as long as it does not involve weird shit - kids blah) and they never heard of USC 2257 and don't want to hear about it.

Chances are you can also live in the Virgin Isles (not the US part) or most of the islands, and not be committed to paying any tax bullshit. Depending on the island, a decent lawyer can get you a corp and automatic right to stay/leave or whatever you want without formal residency or bullshit.

Mmm.. dunno what people you hope to meet - they are the same the world over - dumb, intelligent, rich, poor - the islands are no different.

Only my - but it's not even a question, but obvious where you need to look - and that is not the US, but further south.

Any idea what it'd be like if I maintained a residence in the US but spent the majority of the year (6+ months) in Canada? Would I only have to pay tax in Canada?

This is assuming I don't apply for citizenship, don't get a SSN, etc. Just rent or buy a place.

It's different if you're not claiming any sort of status in the US other than visiting. If you don't have an SSN, citizenship, etc - you'll just be paying taxes in Canada. You'd have to pay in both countries if you recorded income in both countries (ie - you received a T4 and a W2).

Suggestion - research a few islands. Don't bother about porn laws - they are not an issue, but more of where you would like to stay. Each of the islands are kinda different, but all pretty nice.

When you know where is best suited - you may want to visit first and check it out. Otherwise if you have a firm clue - phone a lawyer on the island and ask for a quick rundown of what he can do to enable you to live there indefinately without the need for formal residency. This can usually be accomplished by forming an IBC (International Businesss Corp) and where you are the owner/employee. As an employee you prob qualify to come and go as you please.

You will not be paying taxation on your IBC or any personal taxation (you also won't have any other forms to fill in). This is *much* simpler than it sounds - and there are plenty decent lawyers on the islands who can help.

Chicks - Oh there are plenty of them around

I've contempated a move to St. Kitts or St. Thomas before, also thought about Costa Rica for a while but have reconsidered that. I think I may look back into St. Kitts or St. Thomas this year.

It's not that the grass is greener - it's burn't to straw

The US is prob the most unfriendly environment of all western countries for anyone in the adult biz. It also is kinda screwed on legal crap - then there is the sperm count, taxes, obstacle courses and bullshit.

Only my - It's a nice country and some great places to stay, but not even worth the hassle and I sure would never be operating under US laws.

One thing to remember is that St Kitts and St Thomas are kinda small Depends - you may feel "confined" when you get to know the size of these islands. But - they are what you make em - I'd have no problem on either.

Costa Rica is where we operate now (used to live in the Caribbean) - and part of the reason for moving was to be on a mainland area with all facilities nearby. Both Costa Rica and Panama have prob have the best biz scenarios in the Centro American region.

Well - A good friend of mine runs the cable television & cable internet (non-C&W) company on St. Kitts and Turks & Caicos (Spelling?), that's the main reason I've considered either of those. It may be smaller, but it would still mean living on a beach with decent connectivity to the real world.

I considered Costa Rica until another business associate of mine was unable to live there anymore without 3 bodyguards escorting him around at all times, and he's not even involved in any shady business - just has money.

Panama is really business friendly. Nice privacy and banking laws. It is supposed to be up and coming like Costa Rica was years ago.

The non-C&W bit is appealing

Sure.. got to agree - who cares when you can chill out there and still have connectivity. In fact, just been thinking - I could easily spend half the year on the islands and the other half in Costa Rica. Made some good friends there and still have corps operating on the islands.

Dunno where he lived or his background, but that appears very out of the norm. There are plenty wealthy people here and they don't have any problems like that - they don't need one bodyguard, nevermind three *lol*. Can think of two friends who have more assets than God (talking in the billion range, how high, doubt they even know) and they don't have problems.

Tho... it's not uncommon to employ domestic staff here - like maid, gardner blah and sometimes a guard is employed, but sure not normal for a personal bodyguard.

We have never had any crime problems since we came here years ago - in fact, the total reverse - the people are very friendly and willing to genuinely help if there is a problem - and that includes law enforcement who will help with total crap (eg getting into a swamp and pulling your car out) - stuff that is unrealistic to visualize in other places.

Tho sure.. there is crime, but no more than elsewhere - and most of that is petty stuff.

Agree eZe The up and coming bit has already started - investment there can be totally silly in terms of appreciation (and not in the white powder stuff that was used for the foundations of office blocks in Panama City )

Costa Rica is maybe a few years ahead of Pamama on the investment side, but still showing high returns on eg real estate of 40-60% annually on the Pacific Coast. But from a biz angle, prob Panama is better.

If you dont have a degree or a job offer, a lawyer is not going to give you the time of day. However, if anyone in your family (right up to great grandparents, were born in the states or have dual citizenship) You can get in quite easily.

http://www.grasmick.com is one of the best immigration lawyers for canadians wanting to get into the states.

You have to have something to offer them IE a job offer or starting a new business. Moving there just because you want to live somewhere sunny isn't going to cut it. Also, it's not as easy as you think to get married and just move on in....have you even spoken to an immigration lawyer?

If you are looking at Warm all year round places to live check out The Dominican Republic. I have friends that have moved there and are quite happy. Connectivity is good, prices are still reasonable and there is a lot of development going on.

As a Canadian, I wouldn't even bother with coming to the U.S.....And moving to the Virgin Islands would be a BIG mistake...It's expensive to live anywhere, even in the ghettoes and would be a shock to your wallet..

I live here in Puerto Rico and it would be very hard to shoot content here if that's what you need to do...I have to fly to Ohio every few months just to shoot enough content to last me while I'm down here. However, it is relatively inexpensive and the weather and surroundings are nice.

Your best bet is to move to a caribbean island that isn't owned by the U.S...Anywhere except Jamaica which is a shithole and where porn is illegal. I would also rule out the Dominican Republic. If you get caught with even a small joint or one of the models that you shoot there gets mad, you're good as fucked.

dont think you can just come to phx and screw up our guy/girl ratios and get away with it, you need to come down and bring at least 2 canadian girls

You can stay 6 months at a time without a visa. You can own a home and a car. You just have to leave and enter again with in 6 months.
